After another huge advertising blitz the second Mox tourney of the year
took place at the Florence Nightingale.
34 people turned up and paid 5 pounds each for an event where
*everyone* gets a prize.
Format was 'double elimination' which meant after your second loss
you got to play in an 8 player draft or take your prize and leave.
After 5 rounds of this there were 8 standing and we played knockout.
The field was very varied with a couple of Donais 5cU,
Ballinger 70 card Living Death, Cad Bloom, several Blossom Rider variants,
a few White Weenie, at least one Necro deck and probably
just one Sligh deck.
I lent Ollie my proper tornament deck and played with a bunch of goblins.

The winning deck looked just like this...

The Song Remains the Same

Main Deck
14 Mountains
4 Wastelands
2 Goblin Vandal
4 Jackal Pup
4 Mogg Conscripts
4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Mogg Raider
4 Fireslinger
4 Goblin Tinkerer
4 Ironclaw Orcs
4 Mogg Flunkies
3 Suq'Ata Lancer
4 Song of Blood
1 Goblin Bombardment

Sideboard
1 Dwarven Miner
1 Dwarven Thaumaturgist
1 Flashfires
1 Goblin Vandal
2 Hand to Hand
2 Jinxed Idol
2 Mogg Maniac
1 Null Rod
2 Pyroblast
2 Ruination

I wanted to build a deck where the Mogg Flunky was a star,
it turns out the real gem is the Mogg Raider.
The sideboard was just thrown together on the day,
so don't bother to tell me how bad it is.
Should have 4 Pyroblast 3 Hand to Hand and 8 random cards.

1st Kit Li Mono Blue Tradewind Stasis (?)
His deck was MiVi style blue control with I guess a couple of
Stasis for the lock and a rogue Winding Canyon.
Second game he pinned me in the Stasis Lock with Chill out
the other two I rush him.

2nd Keith Loveys G/R/w Critter/Burn/Geddon
We split the first two with bad draws, in the third he takes some
damage from my early creatures then gets out 4th turn Roots and
5th turn Force of Nature! I sing the Song for +4 and attack with 4 creatures
ending the game,

3rd Graham Buck Counter Sliver Mcnish Style
The Mcnish deck is good but mine simply doesn't care about untargetability
or flying and just runs him over. If he'd drawn his 'gandas it would have
been a different story.

4th Ollie 5cW
Ollie is playing my White Weenie deck which crushed the song in testing.
First game we exchange attack between his Priest/Crusade
and my ground creatures who get whittled down by a Warrior.
I waste all his off colour land, and we both end up on one life but I have
a Mogg Fanatic.
Second he draws some sideboard cards.
Third he draws two land, I draw Wasteland, Flashfires.

5th Dave Challis 4cG Blossom Rider
My deck is bad against this as I lack removal.
First game I rush him, in the other two he makes CoP Red and I can't
draw a Hand to Hand. He beats me up with a Tradewind !?!

I'm on 4-1 Dave is alone on 5-0 , 8 people are left in so we play KO.

Q Charles Murray U/W Tradewinds and things
In the second game he makes a Priest and a CoP and crushes me
in the other two I rush him.

S Richard W Very Small Deck
First game he mulligans down to a 5 card hand with no land!
Second we exchange damage his shadows reduce me to 2,
he is on 6. He has two blockers I have 2 Conscripts 1 Flunky 1 Firewalker
I make a Mogg Raider and attack...

F Tony Dobson Steel Necro Someone said the 4 Bottle Gnomes and 3 Spinning
Darkness might give me some sort of problem. First game is very strange as it
lasts about 20 turns, he is under Necro most of the game and recursing Bottle
Gnomes using the Stronghold, We both end very low on life, he can draw one of
his 3 remaining Drains and just win. Dan Paskins keeps telling me I should
just play my Fireblasts and win. I can keep some creatures on the table as I
keep drawing them. Eventually we lays a Steel Golem and goes for the win. I
block with a Tinkerer and kill his last Gnome with it, he can't draw anything
to deal with two incoming Flunkies and I somehow win. Second game he kill a
couple of Goblins and goes for the Necro I sing the Song needing 3 cards for
the win, I turn them over one at a time
Raider....Mountain....Tinkerer.....Lancer!

Tony gets a bunch of boosters and I get the Mox Jet.

Didn't see a Cursed Scroll all day ?!????

thanks to Steve and Chris for the organisation.

Congrats on the win, John. Any chance of a report from the Antwerp Grand
Prix sometime? I've yet to see a report from a UK bod regarding one of
these events.

From the perspective of one of the judges at GP Antwerp, let me just say two
words....

"French players"

Draw from that what conclusions you wish to.....

what's a ballinger 70 card living death ?

blossom rider (or broken rider :) decks look strong- i think they're
also known as 'flagpole' decks in the US
with or without awakenings btw?

great hangover deck !
there were a couple of rogue songs of blood decks kicking around
during the tempest rotation - hand to hand make them much more
playable after bording....

usually the flunky is pretty dreadful, but in a deck with this many
critters he might work - how did you rate him?

'Ballinger 70' is the brain-child of Stuart Ballinger (DCI 264108, Team
Dream Fighter, Team Kent). So called due to the fact that it contains
70 cards, and still manages to win tournamnets. Basically it is a
Living Death beat-up-your-opponent-up-with-nasty-creatures-or-
coffinqueen-your-opponents-creature-and-_then_-beat-him-up deck. We're
going to get him to write a report on it soon, so watch this space...

What was the thaumaturgist for? Are you doing the old trick of winning
a tournament with intentionally rubbish cardws for a laff. I have done it
in Xtended with kudzu! Tony has had a rogue acidic dagger in his deck WW
(and won). Does hand to hand interact w/ justice or not? How many scrolls
did you tinker away?

If you had bothered to read my whole article you would know.
I said my sideboard was junk so don't bother telling me.
The Thaumaturgist is really good against the 5cG
I sided it in for two matches and if I had drawn it in either it would
have been really good, specially in the game where Dave had 3 birds and
2 Walls.
I also said that I played against zero scrolls.
Don't know about the Justice because noone plays it.

Chris , learn to read!
