ANNOUNCE: AHI Enterprise Edition

Software are proud to announce the availability of a new retargetable audio
standard for all personal computers, including IBM PC and compatibles,
Amiga home computers and Sun workstations.
The new standard, called AHI Enterprise Edition, is a highly advanced,
multithreaded, 32 bit multi-platform audio kernel that will once and for
all put an end to the portability problem when it comes to consumer audio
applications. Following the Java philosophy, "write once, run anywhere",
AHI Enterprise Edition delivers a, pardon the expression, shitload of
features in one single platform and Operating System independent API.
AHI Enterprise Edition can deal with anything you can hear. Due to its
brilliant modular design, it can later be enhanced with any new audio
technology that might appear, and new secondary-level APIs can be added for
compability with old retargetable audio standards. AHI Enterprise Edition
already offers full binary compability with AHI version 4 for AmigaOS,
DirectSound and DirectMusic for Microsoft Windows and SoundManager for
MacOS, making it a child's play to port old applications to this new
standard.
The system handles MIDI with DLS, AES/EBU data, streaming audio, Dolby
Surround and AC-3, MPEG-4 Audio, full four-dimensional audio with both
spatial and temporal compression, yes, even software-based DSP algorithms
like realtime echo cancellation and modem emulation. For this reason, AHI
Enterprise Edition has not only impressed Sun Microsystems, Inc. and
Microsoft Corporation, but also Motorola, Inc. and Telefonaktiebolaget LM
Ericsson, who both have announced support for AHI Enterprise Edition in
their high-end mobile phones and even voice-controlled facsimiles.
AHI Enterprise Edition is fully designed for Internet Audio, and even
includes a small TCP/IP stack that, together with the built-in modem
emulation, can be used with any computer or electronic device connected to
a speaker for RealAudio streaming, InterNet Phone applications and consumer
quality Digital Broadcasting. For Amiga users, this is a major
break-through, since these applications have been unavailable until now.
For Windows users, it means that the Operating System system will have full
support for InterNet Audio with realtime performance. Microsoft plan to
gradually phase out their DirectSound and DirectMusic APIs and move the
developers over to the superior AHI Enterprise Edition API.
"Some Amiga users might wonder why there has been no new release of AHI for
quite a while.", Martin says. "Well, now you know. I've been working hard
porting and re-implementing the system from scratch. It has also taken a
lot of work convincing my software partners, Sun Microsystems, Inc. and
Microsoft Corporation, of the need for a standardized computer audio
system. The next step is to get it included in BeOS Release 4 for Intel
Pentium and PowerPC, and then the aim will be ISO standardization."
AHI Enterprise Edition is currently in late beta stage for AmigaOS. A
time-limited evaluation beta is available to all Internet users, see the
references at the end of this press release. The Microsoft Windows
version, that builds on top of the new Win32 Driver Model and the COM++
technology, will be shipped with Windows 98 and Windows NT 5.0. The SunOS
version is currently being evaluated by Sun Microsystems, Inc., and CEO
Scott McNealy has hinted it might appear in Java as well.
"But there is much more just behind the corner", Martin adds. "An
independent research and developer group based in Nagasaki, Japan, is
working on a totally new, ground-breaking technology called audio-based
hypnosis, and the group has chosen AHI Enterprise Edition as its developer
platform. Audio-based hypnosis exploits extremely low-frequency bass sounds
to send arbitrary messages to the subconscious of the human mind. Imagine
a computer game, where the player actually experiences fear, love or hate,
just like the role character!"

shipped with a pair of Sun glasses!", Martin adds with a smile.
Martin Blom is the programmer of AHI, a retargetable audio standard for
AmigaOS that was released spring 1996. Using the huge profits he gained
from it, he founded Martin Blom Technologies in July 1996, leaving the
development of AHI to Divine Software. AHI version 4 was officially
released in April, 1997, and has since then become the de facto
retargetable audio standard for AmigaOS.

A time-limited beta version for AmigaOS can be downloaded, free of charge,
from the following addresses. The current version requires a PowerPC 604
processor, but a 68040 version will be in the release version.
