This is my original article:
#############################################################
I think it's pretty disgusting when the "Faggots
Pride Week" parade gets coverage on 1/2 of page 2
of the city paper, and a victory like the Vashchenko'
has to settle for page 10....

Wondering what this world's coming to...

Why all the fuss about the use of the word "Faggots"?
It can be found in most dictionaries..
(I really never knew it pertained only to males...)
I thought this was net.flame? If I want to use this
word I'll use it. Other people use words much more
degrading on this net then faggot. People are
really getting upset at my using this word when
the jest of my article went completely over there
heads...
Why is it that only a couple people bothered to ask
"Who the heck are the Vashchenko's"? If you still
miss the point, the Vashchenko's are a Soviet family
who were being persecuted because of their religious
beliefs. Approximatly 5 yrs ago, 5 members of the
family sought refuge in the U.S. Embasy. They had been
trying to leave the county for 23 yrs. Finally the
commies agreed to let them go.

My article was a flame because the Gay Pride Parade
got coverage on page 2 ot the Chi. Sun-Times while
the Vashchenko story ended up on page 10.

Possibly, in future articles I may change to the
word "Queer", but for now you'll have to settle for
'el Faggot'....

Still spelling sickning sickning,,

Here's a rather interesting set of statements from Ray Jender.

It can be found in most dictionaries..

So can "nigger", Ray, and I'll bet you find "fucker" in there too. In
any case, it is not the word that makes people mad. It is the
intolerant, narrow-minded, and, yes, just plain imbecilic attitudes
belied by your posting which upsets us.

I thought this was net.flame? If I want to use this
word I'll use it. Other people use words much more
degrading on this net then faggot.

Such as? I haven't heard anyone called nigger, Christ-killer,
motherfucker, turd-head, and so on, on this group or any other. Maybe
you could provide us with some examples, or does just saying it make
it so?

People are really getting upset at my using this word
when the jest of my article went completely over there

[sic] heads...

Hey, that's some pretty funny stuff there, Ray! I nearly bust a gut
laughing! Why, I haven't laughed so hard since my last Klan meeting!
Perhaps your jest should have gone to net.jokes instead. Certainly
that would be the proper resting place for your attitudes.

Possibly, in future articles I may change to the word

"Queer", but for now you'll have to settle for 'el faggot'...

Well now, I think that's mighty big of you to consider changing like
that. Of course, you do know that most of the people who react as
virulently as you to the presence of homosexuals have grave doubts
about their own masculinity, and feel obligated to prove their macho-
hood by primate dominance rituals such as the one you have
demonstrated for us, namely the slinging of shit. (I'm serious;
that's one major way primates show dominance. Humans transcend the
ape in their ability to use figurative rather than literal feces.)

How many gays have you heard of going into heterosexual bars and
swinging away with a baseball bat? When a heterosexual does this to
gays, he is really swinging at himself, at his own homosexual demons.
Every person has elements of bisexuality in them. Some can't live
with this, and prove themselves the true "faggots" by taking their
inability to cope out on others. Grow up, Ray.

Ray Jender seems utterly astonished that his original, highly intolerant
article is drawing so much fire.

Why all the fuss about the use of the word "Faggots"?
It can be found in most dictionaries..

So can the word "nigger," but that doesn't make it socially acceptable.

I thought this was net.flame? If I want to use this
word I'll use it. Other people use words much more
degrading on this net then faggot.

Okay, use the word. But the fact that this is net.flame doesn't mean
we can't flame at you for doing so. And even if other people are using
even more offensive words, does this justify you? Do two wrongs make
a right? Do you want to sink to their level?

People are really getting upset at my using this word when

the jest (sic) of my article went completely over there (sic)
heads...

I think you mean "gist" and "their" and we all got your point.

Why is it that only a couple people bothered to ask
"Who the heck are the Vashchenko's"?

Well, I didn't ask because I knew who they were. Maybe some other
people did, too.

My article was a flame because the Gay Pride Parade

got coverage on page 2 of the Chi. Sun-Times while

the Vashchenko story ended up on page 10.

In my local paper, the stories appeared on the same page. Better
check out those dangerous radicals running the Sun-Times. They are
doubtless agents of the international communist conspiracy.

Hey, YO! WAKE UP!
I beg of you all!

Recently, I saw an ignorant article in this newsgroup which denigrated
gays. Since then, several people have fanned this person's flames,
usually making fun of his narrow-minded attitudes, not to mention his
spelling. The discussion has actually gone through TWO iterations!

STOP IT! If you see an article in netnews (or an action anywhere
else) which seems meant only to attract attention, don't offer that
attention in public. Bawl out the person in private (using mail) but
don't try to make fun of him. That's just stooping down to his
level and serving his low purpose.

fag - n. Slang. A ciggarette. [<ME fagge]

faggot - n. Also faggot. A bundle of twigs or sticks.

Hmm, why personify a bunch of sticks? What did they ever do
to you?

Why all the fuss about the use of the word

People are really getting upset at my using this
word when the [gist] of my article went completely

over there heads... Why is it that only a couple

Vashchenko's"?

First, if you are unhappy with the reception given your article, maybe
you didn't really want to use the word after all. The fact that there
was one person out there (spaf@gatech) who didn't dismiss your article
out of hand upon seeing the word "faggot" suggests you were exception-
ally lucky.

But to respond to your question: No, I do not agree that the release
of the Vashchenko's is more important than Homosexual Pride Week. Just
what is so important about the decision of the Soviet Union to allow
*one* family to emigrate? There are *thousands* of people who want to
emigrate from the Soviet Union. The important story is that the Soviet
Union has reduced emigration from the Soviet Union to a trickle, appar-
ently in response to Reagan's Cold War retoric.

The press seems to be in love with "human interest" stories. The current
fervor over this girl (I don't know her name and don't care) who wrote
Andropov a letter about the nuclear arms race is sickenning. Some bureau-
crat writes a reply to this girl, the Soviet Union shells out a few thous-
sand dollars (at most) to pay for her visit to the Soviet Union, and in
return the Soviet Union gets oodles of free publicity. Why should the
press cover the story? The story has no real significance except to show
that Andropov has an understanding of the deficeincies of the American
press, a point that members of the press do not seem particularly quick
to point out.

Now that I know what the "Vaschenko story" is, I can only say that
I think that page 10 (or more) was a suitable location for the story.

I personally have little or no interest in a story of the Soviet
government persecuting some of its citizens (since the number of their
citizens who are persecuted by the gov't is staggering!). The "Gay
Pride Week" parade is of only marginally more interest to me, but
clearly that is a story affecting a larger number of readers of the
Sun Times. So, it is appropriate that the story would be given more
coverage.

Not only does "sickening" have an "e," but many Vaschenkos are referred to
WITHOUT the apostrophe.

And I wouldn't have called the affair with the Vaschenkos a "victory." You
seem to have a pretty bizarre picture of the world. I hope that those who
profess to defend the US are better informed.
