Hi

I hope it's OK to cross-post this. I am having major bluescreen problems
with Win98. Here is an example:

"A fatal exception 0E has occured at 0028:c1695663 in VXD MCSCAN32(01) +
000267C3. The current application will be terminated."

I got this when I tried to run a Windows system diagnostic tool. The only
apps that work at the moment are IE5.0 and OE5.5. It doesn't always mention
the above app. I don't know what those numbers mean above, sometimes they
are different.

Everything else I try to run, whether from CDs or installed s/w bluescreens.
i have checked for h/w conflicts - there are none. I have tried to
de-install all s/w which I don't use. I can't remember doing anything
special before this happened although my wife did try and fail to install a
newer version of MSN Messenger which has now been deleted and the original
version re-installed.

Please, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Well...if you get allot of random blue screens, the first thing that I would
check is RAM, you may have a bad stick of memory, pull one out and try, if
you still get Blue Screens, put it back in and pull out a different one and
try again, also, if you deleted messenger the wrong way, you may have tossed
out a shared file, in that case, you will have to try and reinstall
windows...Good Luck.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur when McAfee VirusScan is installed on the
computer.

RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1
Disable the Vsstat.exe component (from McAfee's VirusScan). For
additional information about how to disable the Vsstat.exe component,
click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base:
How to Troubleshoot Using the Msconfig Utility with Windows 98
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q281/9/65.ASP

Method 2
Contact McAfee for an update to the VirusScan program.

Method 3
Remove McAfee VirusScan. To do this, follow these steps:
On the taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control
Panel.

In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.

In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click McAfee VirusScan
on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove.

Follow the instructions to completely remove McAfee VirusScan from the
computer.

NOTE: Another method to resolve this may be to run the McAfee Virus Scan
repair tool.

Although there is much to be said for the various iterations of Linux,
for the most part, it is "not ready for prime time" as far as consumer
systems go. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big Micro$loth fan, it's just
that for most users "point and click" requires a major investment if
intellect.... it's lucky they can still breath while deciding if "right
click" means "use the right hand to click" or "put the mouse on the
right side of the keyboard". Imagine what would happen if they were
asked to untar a file.....
