work. I need to send CDs with the presentation to numerous
customers. Please, can you help me with that.

Anna, my partner and I have a product that will do the trick for you and it
also includes 12 tutorials to help you with some of the intricacies of
creating a PowerPoint autorun CD. Please check it out at the URL in my

Kelly, this is a text only newsgroup and attachments and HTML are not
welcomed. Your attachment is extremely large for our friends in Europe who
pay a "metered" rate to their phone companies for Internet access. It's
also very large for the *many* people who are still on dial-up, no matter
where they live.

It is also not quite as simple as creating an autorun.inf (not .ini) file.
If the target user does not have the Viewer installed it won't work. Also,
if they do have it installed, how do you know the Dir? That's the benefit
of the Autorun CD Project Creator. The whole thing works automatically from
the CD and there are no dependencies on what is installed and available on
the target system. No changes are made to the user's system. Everything
just runs from the CD.

Just my 2 1/2 cents.

sorry if the attachment is to much but (1.28mg) I gave a
link to the very same files just thought it would be
easyer to get the attachment than website. I have created
a very large presentation that involves many links and
animated photos for my company I have used all before
mention autorun technecs. if they have autorun turned off
on there cd-rom there isnt anything you can do very
easyly. My cd goes all over the world and I havent had any
problems. I currently use Maistro because of the ability
to access more than 1 file or presentation. If you feel
the need to make things diffacult for yourself feel free
and happy presenting :)

I'm sorry that I was so abrupt about the attachment, but most news readers
will download the file if the message is opened. It's always better to just
give the NG member the option to visit an URL and download a file, or to
offer to send it via E-mail to anyone who wants it. I'm on DSL and you
appear to be on cable, so we enjoy high speed and good pricing, and we are
quite fortunate. A high percentage of people do not enjoy the same benefits
yet.

What many people in the U.S. and other parts of the world don't realize is
that if you are in Europe and are paying metered rates, the best and
cheapest thing is to "synchronize", i.e. download all un-read messages,
logoff, read and prepare responses as needed, logon and upload your
responses and logoff (minimum online time). However, if you "synchronize"
it's non-selective. Everything gets read and downloaded.

(If you have succeeded in creating autorun CD's, then there is no need for
any additional tools. However, an estimated 40,000-50,000 people have found
our software very valuable.)

One of the tenets of the newsgroup is that people have different thoughts,
ideas, and suggested solutions. We just all jump in and offer them and
readers can explore what works best for them, and ignore what doesn't appeal
to them. We also agree to disagree sometimes, but we never fight. Life is
too short and too beautiful. <VBG>

Kelly, thank you for the information on Mastro, but please don't post
attachments to the newsgroup.

For others who have skipped the post because of the attachment, the link

Why don't you stop trying to screw people over and just
tell them the code. It's like a ten line code and no one
needs your "product".

Tell you what, Scott, since we just went through this a couple of weeks ago,
I'll post the code and old articles tonight -- I've got 'em at home, not
here at the office -- but at that point I have to say that my knowledge of
AutoRun CD stuff is kaput and you're all on your own as far as working out
any kinks. It's that "working out the issues" part that's too difficult to
support on the newsgroup. If you're interested in the "why" of that, then
see the thread from earlier this month entitled, "AUTORUN from a CD -
AGAIN."

Scott,
If it's so easy to write "like 10 lines of code". Go right ahead and
post it here for the world. If you can't do it, that it might not
necessarily be that simple a solution I should suspect.

And there are additional issues of extra support that weigh into the
issue of posting code for free or charging a fee.

Kindest regards,

I'm late with this, but hey, I had stuff to do yesterday. <g>

As promised, here are the various articles on creating autorun CD. And
also as promised, I'll say if these don't work for you, sorry, I can't
help.

If you experience problems with these instructions or if your
presentation utilizes any hyperlinks, movies, sound, etc., I'd recommend
using one of the following programs instead:

impatica: http://www.impatica.com/

Presidia: http://www.presedia.com/

AutoPlay Menu Studio http://www.indigorose.com/autoplay/index.html (with
tutorial at http://www.indezine.com/products/powerpoint/ppautorun.html )

Mastro: http://www.pollensoftware.com/autorun/maestro.html

RunIt (or RunIt Plus if your recipients don't have PPT installed):
http://www.creativemindsinc.com/runit.htm

On to the articles...

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q241/4/93.asp
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q239/8/15.asp

also:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q197/9/33.asp (Export
Wizard romoved)
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q237/8/91.asp (PPT97:
Running Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer from CD-ROM Not Supported)

And finally, Q173937, which has been pulled from the MSKB because it
turned out to generate many many support calls to MS due to the often
complex nature of presentations users are attempting to burn to CD.
Scott, here's the code you wanted.

Title: PPT97: How to Run PowerPoint Viewer 97 from a Compact Disc

Last reviewed: November 25, 1998 Article ID: Q173937
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows
SUMMARY

WARNING: The information in this article has not been confirmed or
tested by Microsoft. Some or all of the information
in this article has been taken from unconfirmed customer reports.

THIS ARTICLE IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. Microsoft provides this
information "as is" without warranty of any kind, either
express or implied, including but not limited to the implied

purpose.

This article describes how to setup a compact disc so that your
presentation will run automatically when you place it in
the CD-ROM drive. The presentation plays without copying any files
to the hard disk and without running Microsoft
PowerPoint Viewer 97 setup.

NOTES:
This procedure only works if you have a CD-ROM burner or
access to a CD-ROM burner.
This method does not fully install the PowerPoint Viewer 97.
Therefore, the following features are not available:

- Hyperlinking to other PowerPoint presentations.
- Hyperlinking to Internet Web Sites.

You need to have the PowerPoint Viewer 97, which is available
for download.
When burning the CD-ROM for use on Microsoft Windows NT 3.51,
use the following guidelines:
- All directories and file names must be less than 32
characters.
- All directories and file names must use capital
letters.
- The directory tree cannot exceed 8 levels from the
root.

For additional information, please see the following articles
in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

ARTICLE-ID: Q142372

TITLE : Windows NT Support for Long File Names Under CDFS
File System ARTICLE-ID: Q93604 TITLE : ISO 9660 Support for CD-ROM

MORE INFORMATION

Step 1: Create the folder structure on your hard disk

Create the following folder structure on your hard disk:

Root
\Present
\Setup

The Present and Setup folders must be created at the root level of
the CD-ROM. The Viewer 97 looks for a Setup
folder one level below the ppview32.exe.

Step 2: Create the Autorun.inf and *.lst file

1.On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, Point to
Accessories, and click NotePad.

2.Enter the following information exactly as written below:

[autorun]
open=ppview32.exe present\present.lst

NOTE: All autorun commands need to be flush left in the *.inf
file. Also the present.lst can be replaced with the
name of a presentation file, such as "myprew.ppt" or
"main.pps" as long as you do not use spaces in the
filename.

3.On the File menu, click Save.

4.In the Save In box, select the root folder you created in Step
1. In the File Name box, enter "autorun.inf"
(without the quotation marks). Click Save.

5.On the File menu, click New.

6.Enter the name of your presentation.

NOTE: Enter the name of the presentation only. Do not include
the path of the file.

7.On the File menu, click Save.

8.In the Save In box, select the \present folder you created in
Step 1. In the File Name box, enter "present.lst"
(without the quotation marks). Click Save.

Step 2: Copying Files to the compact disc

Using a CD-ROM burner, copy the following files from your hard
disk to the appropriate folders on the compact disc.
Make sure you place the presentation files in the \present folder,
along with any linked movie (.avi) or sound (.wav)
files.

Copy these files to the root folder on the compact disc:

Autorun.inf
Base.srg
Pp4x322.dll
Pp7x32.dll
Ppintlv.dll
Ppview32.exe
Rappt.dll
Selfreg.dll
Servrdep.srg
Servrind.srg
Sshow.srg
Docobj.dll
Hlink.dll
Hlinkprx.dll
Msimrt.dll
Msimrt16.dll
Msimrt32.dll
Msimusic.dll
Mso97v.dll
Msorfs.dll
Msppt8vr.olb
Msv7enu.dll
T2embed.dll
Urlmon.dll
Wininet.dll

Copy the following file to the \setup folder:

Ppview.dll

Copy the following files to the \present folder:

<your presentation>.ppt
any linked files
*.avi files
*.wav files
narrations
Present.lst

Apparently, you have a different idea of how to provide help than does
Sonia [Coleman]. Fair enough. I know I would have done things
differently. However, the key is she *did* it. There is no doubt that
the basic principle of creating a CD is quite straightforward. No,
that's not true. It is trivial. But, ensuring it works under all
conditions is a daunting challenge.

I have mixed feelings about Sonia's estimate of 40,000 units sold. On
the one hand, that's a fair chunk of change. On the other hand, unless
she has hired help, support for *every* possible combination for each of
her customers is downright scary. I'd have many a sleepless night.

Let me make you an offer. If the 'code' is 10 lines (as an aside, WTF
is Echo S doing with a gazillion line post that includes references to
multiple *other* articles), why don't you share it? I'll host it on my
site and give you the credit. One condition. You agree to field all
the questions that it generates.

I already made the same offer to Scott privately, Tushar, but he hasn't
replied. I'm interested in seeing his code and would certainly host it too,
if it worked, but I would not provide the user support.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that I've never said that we have sold 40,000 copies,
because that would be a bold lie. Only my partner knows
how many we have sold, and believe me it's a very tiny fraction of that. I
only said that we estimate that 40,000 people have downloaded and used the
product and we have provided full support to each person who had questions
or problems (not a trivial number). The support aspects are definitely
scary. However, I can't imagine offering a tool and not supporting it
fully. That is why after working 16 hours a day supporting freeware, it
finally became necessary in March 2001 to charge something for the product.
We set the price as low as possible, and probably too low based on what the
other products charge. <G>

I have problem with the Autorun cd. I don't know if the
program is a problem or the way I burn CDs. I burned
autorun cds and when i tried them on different cd players
my buttons don't work on all ofg them. I noticed that the
presentation is working on 32X and up CDplayers, on lesser
models i have the problem with the buttons. do you have
any idea what the problem could be?

Anna, it is best to send a direct question to sup...@soniacoleman.com or
sup...@aladat.com . Actually, I do not recognize you as one of our
registered users. Perhaps you haven't registered yet?

When using a "third-party" product like Autorun CD Project Creator, it is
best to write directly to the "support" address. You'll often get a quicker
response and the information will directly address your problem.

By the way, the Autorun CD Project Creator does not have any impact on how
your presentation is played and displayed. Play-back is handled by the
Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer. However, the PPT Viewer does have some
constraints. I would recommend the Help File that comes with the Autorun CD
Project Creator for tons of info. There are also 12 tutorials that are
included with the product. Read, read, read.
