ABC Family Announces Kids Block Premiering Saturday, March 2 -- Power
Rangers, Digimon and Marvel Properties Featured in Lineup

PASADENA, Calif.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Jan. 12, 2002--ABC Family will debut

Programming and Production, Disney Channel. ABC Family will air the kids
block seven days a week (7:00-9:00 a.m., ET/PT).

"These proven action-oriented series help us maximize the tremendous

Hmmm...

Well, it appears EVERY episode will NOT be aired then, but this is great,
nonetheless. A true miracle.

PRTF.

Well, this'll certainly allow people a chance to re-tape episodes, but 2 a day?
The series will be finished in 20 days! (Perhaps, at some point, older episodes
will begin airing in the 8-9 timeslot.)

I wonder if they'll be the edited versions... (I bet so.)

I just hope Dish Network is still carrying ABC Family in March.

>7:00-9:00AM POWER RANGERS THEATER
>(Best of Seasons 1-5)

If it's seasons, that's all 3 MMPR, Zeo, and Turbo. Hopefully, they mean
Incarnations. (MMPR, Zeo, Turbo, PRiS, PRLG) Either way, no LR, though.

Read that last line carefully-- it's a DISNEY CHANNEL guy that's making this
announcement. This might mean nothing. However, it could also mean that they
might be showing Saban programming on Disney(at a better time, hopefully ;)--
which could be a nice possibility. I'd stay tuned on this.

Ugh.

Odds are, these are all the 90s cartoons. While they are nice(well, ok, FF and
IM are just watchable for the cheese value until they get to the second seasons
of both shows), they've been rerun to death. Why can't they go and show
Incredible Hulk(80s and 90s versions), the '79 FF with Hervie, 70s Spider-Man,
and Amazing Friends?! Geez...

Two hours of PR bliss. At 7 in the morning, but you take what you get. As
Crowmeus said, tho, this leaves some doubt as to what will air. is it MMPR
Seasons 1-3, Zeo, and Turbo? Or all of PR up to Lost Galaxy? If they were
smart, they'd do the former. Because while Space and LG were two of the better
seasons, the seasons before that largely had self-contained 1-to-2-part
episodes. Easier to run them out of order, unlike Space and LG, which were
more serialized. Let's just hope that they don't hack it up like the censored
PRTF eps...

Double run of PRTF. Kiiiicka**.

I haven't taped the series, but I sure as hell will now. :) Plus, previous PR
rerun cycles started with Season One MMPR, and featured that very
prominently("Blast from the Power Past", the 1997 "Mighty Morphin' Power
Rangers Classic", Power Playback, the OTO disaster). It's just refreshing to
see them start with PRTF, and then work their way back to the other seasons.
I'm very excited about this!

Just a hunch. Anyone else think that after a full 40-ep run here
(which, at 10 eps a week, will take just four weeks without skipping
any), they might make at least one of the 10 PR slots a PRWF rerun
slot?

Anyhow, Andy was right. This will make us happy!

Or possibly, a slot for all the other Power Rangers episodes. Pre-PRTF.
Theater's not going to cover them all, but hot damn... Weekdays sure could.

This schedule just reminds me so much of Fox Kids UK.Here there's a Power
Rangers Bonanza.On at 7:30 pm to 10pm every weekend.And they're currently
going through all the eps one by one from Day of the Dumpster.Maybe it's the
same thing.

Or it could be like FKUK's Power Lunch.Where they showed an ep from each
incarnation.

Sounds great. We'll probably get to see the rest of the MMPR-PRIS
epsidoes that OTO owes us. It kind of scares me though. I wonder how
long they can even keep this up. I mean, two whole hours of PR on
Sunday. Makes me think of OTO, and how long that stuck around.

That would be easy if most of my episodes were in NTSC.

How would one go about getting ABC Family channel? It's not available from

Call your cable provider and ask that they carry it. There is no guarantee
that they will, but that's how you go about trying to get it. What satellite
providers are you looking at? I know that both Dish Network and DirecTV both
carry the channel, it may still be called Fox Family in their packages.

I don't think there will be much trouble finding out well in advance which eps
will be on each week. ABCFam has been quite good in getting episode info to
the listings sites at least a week ahead of time.

But they HAVE to start with DotD, don't they?

I guess cable channels don't have affiliate pre-feeds, so there's no hope for
WOABCFam, is there??? :-)

Might be a little early to make that connection, but it's certainly possible.
Disney owns the shows and owns the network. No need to negotiate with anyone
else for first-run rights.

Come September, it will be interesting to see if ABCFam expands that kids
block with new eps of PR, Digimon (and others) and goes full-bore up against
WB, Nick, and Fox.

UPN, in a sort of anthology with Fantastic Four, and I think X-Men.

They also had some version of Spider-Man that looked like it came out about
the same time as NBC's "Amazing Friends", but with different VA's and I
hadn't seen it until then.

Actually, I believe Iron Man was originally syndicated -- paired with Fantastic
Four in the Marvel Action Hour.

This was back in '94 or '95.

I think.

OK, New World Entertainment's Genesis distribution arm syndicated the shows in
1994 as the "Marvel Action Hour"(later the "Marvel Action Universe", taking the
name of the 80s anthology block). The shows lasted two seasons and then
disappeared in 1996. Saban wound up with the rights eventually and in 1997
syndicated the repeats in a weekday strip known as "Marvel Super Heroes".
After they got out of the syndication business, UPN got the rights to air the
show; they were mixed in with repeats of UPN's Incredible Hulk show until the
end of the season, when the whole Action Zone block was axed to allow room for
Disney's "1 Too" block.

Anyway, I thought that first-season Iron Man was a show with some of the
funniest technical goofs I've seen in a cartoon(Modok's nose kept disappearing
in one shot, in another cartoon the animators animated War Machine's faceplate
so that the mouth slit moved like a mouth when he talked), and the plots
were... uhm, average at best. At least it was better than the comic it was
loosely based on, Force Works :) It was fun to watch, much in the vein of a bad
horror flick. On the other hand, season 2 was EXCELLENT; the animation was
improved, the theme song kicked ass, and the plots not only made sense, they
were gripping and really got into the characters. I love the show and I think
I have almost every episode on tape; hopefully the ABC Family run will be a
refresher course.

Yeah, that's right. I recall watching it every Saturday(or maybe Sunday?)
morning on a nonaffiliated channel out of Seattle. Same place I watched
Dragonball and DBZ, before it CN started showing it.
I remember the guy who played Lt. Stone(Greg Bulock?) doing intros and outros
for commercials for these shows.

This was years before it became a WB station.

Later, they were on UPN on Sundays, with Hulk, Beetleborgs and Technoman.

OK, adding to this instead of starting a new topic(cuz this is the same thing
as the schedule, and thus it's pointless to start something new).
Mediaweek.com posted a large article on ABC Family today-- I cut and pasted the
part that's applicable to us.

Anne Sweeney, ABC Cable Networks president and president of Disney Channel
Worldwide, will have considerable say in the network's children's programming
in the mornings and on the weekends. In the mornings, ABC Family will continue
Fox Family's focus on boys aged 2-11 with action-oriented series and cartoons.
It is a new arena for Disney and ABC to enter, but the company's deal with News
Corp. and Saban Entertainment included more than 1,000 hours of Saban's
library. In other words, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will rise again, as
will Digimon. A revamped boys block will debut in March and will also feature
Marvel classics like Spiderman and X Men.

"As the block evolves, we will expand the lineup to include new episodes and
original shows that provide more options for advertisers to reach these viewers
and additional opportunities for us to create innovative kids programming,"
says Sweeney.

This means two things:

1.) Expect the next incarnation after PRWF to show up on an expanded ABC Family
kids block

2.) Since Anne Sweeney's Disney Channel seems to be running the ABC Fam kids
blocks, it could be possible for PR or other Saban repeats(VR Troopers...
please god play VR Troopers...) on Disney.

So, are you saying that all post-WF incarnations will only be available on ABC
Family, or just "re-purposed" to ABC Family?

Again, like I said in another thread, it'd only be a waste of money to NOT air
all this programming. And there's no logic in that.

Is there?

Sweeney's "new episodes" comment seems to suggest that new eps of PR and
Digimon are headed towards ABC Family. Since I don't see ABC(1 Saturday
Morning) or WB picking PR up, I'd expect that ABC Family will almost definitely
be the new home for those shows.

Nope. ABC Fam is using the "crown jewels" of the Saban library for their
lineup-- PR, Digimon, and the Marvel shows-- but I'd imagine that Toon Disney
would at least use some of the cartoon library on its channel(lesser-known
shows; a return of the Samurai Pizza Cats, mayhaps?). For live-action, that'd
be a bit harder to pinpoint. I'd say Disney Channel but they're not too big on
the more violent boy-oriented stuff. I guess we'll see...

Teknoman was on before that. It only aired with "Space Strikers", which
was another attempt at the 3d scene within the show like the Bots Master.
Teknoman boasts at least one Power Ranger connection: Paul "Bulkmier"
Schrier was the voice of Slade's evil Teknoman brother.

-ShadowWing
He was also the Owl member of Eagle Riders, which was a major step down from
Teknoman as far as dubbing.

Thanks. I knew about Marvel Action "X", since that's where I saw them,
but I wasn't sure about the UPN airings.

>Anyway, I thought that first-season Iron Man was a show with some of the

I have the official release of "The Origin of Iron Man", and they take a
few liberalties, probably to either stick with the current characters (they
didn't break out of the same regular cast of heroes and villians too often
during S1) or not make more character models. Mandarin took Wong Chi's place
as the guy who made Stark work for him, and he asked specifically for armor.
Plus the armor was the same one he had throughout the season, although the
old armors lined the Armory walls.

>On the other hand, season 2 was EXCELLENT; the animation was

True. I love the theme so much, I have a recording of it. IT ROCKS! The
only thing that threw me was the armor's morphing. The first season actually
had the attachments, which made more sense. Although you did get some
butt-kicking modes, which was probably just an attempt to be toyetic.

>I love the show and I think I have almost every episode on tape;
>hopefully the ABC Family run will be a refresher course.

I can't wait, and I can finally snag them for my collection.
Unfortunately, I'll have to deal with the squashed credits.

-ShadowWing
At least for S2. I'll just transfer the S1 credits from the official tape.

The paragraph above clearly answers my question of a few days ago.
ABCFam is definitely gearing up to be a major player in the kids game,
especially on Saturdays.

The biggest question remains what is to become of the post-FK portion
of PRWF. Maybe that's why there's so much PR in the initial ABCFam
kids schedule. If, come September, the rest of PRWF does come to
ABCFam, they'll be promoting the hell out of it in these 14 time
slots.

>
> 2.) Since Anne Sweeney's Disney Channel seems to be running

I'm looking at the schedules and I don't see any ABCFam shows on the
primary Disney Channel. I would think they'd be doing their best to
make a clear differentiation between the offerings of the two
channels. Disney is well established as showing stuff like "Stanley,"
"Pooh," "Rolie Polie Olie," and the traditional Disney movies and
shows.

ABC Family is the place that's undergoing a major overhaul. That's
where the drastic changes and additions need to take place. To put PR
and the like on BOTH ABCFam and Disney would be clouding a picture
you're trying to clear up.

I find it scary that you don't know. Wait, (checking AFPR Bday list) okay, how
old are you sir?

I'm not that old (21 in a month) and I knew LONG ago. (8-ish)

C-Band is the frequency band that is used by the analog tv satellite system. The
BUG's (Big Ugly Dish) used to access C-Band signals are those large 10-20 foot
dishes in peoples yards. They've only been around about as long as me, but in
the last 5 or so years have lost to small digital dishes from DirecTV and Dish
Network.

I'm not old, cause, smeg, if I am, my parents(48) must be elderly.
