Paladins: Evil vs. Chaos

Now flame e if I'm wrong, but isn't it the case that Paladins must atone for chaotic acts and are irrevocably changed to fighters for evil acts. As per the cursed staff/crown thing. That would be at the least a chaotic act for endangering the NPC without direct knowledge of the potential effects, but it would still be chaotic to recklessly endanger the NPC. However if the Paladin knew the staff had negative effects then it would be an evil act and he would be a fighter forever (His deity would no longe

r wish to deal with him).

So it boils down to:
Was this merely reckless endangerment (a chaotic act which can be atoned for with hard and diligent work?) or was this purposfull premeditated (lets see what happens with the other end I think it might be evil heh heh) NPC using.

Deliberate acts of malice are considered evil, accidents are not. If the
Paladin had no idea and got hit by a magic item or did something unintended,
he/she should be able to atone for it.
