Yeah... And I also wonder how much Clark Development Company paid PC
Magazine for that woundrous view of PCBoard and how it's #1. I've run
PCBoard before : the price is too high, the active voice customer support
stinks, and the software has an excuse for a directory and a file
everywhere. I wish PC Magazine would review some of the better efforts of
independant authors. The only people who really know how to create good
BBS software are those people who have been SysOps, and never started
programming a BBS for a profit.

PC Bored is one of the worst pieces of hostware available -

PC Bored indeed <smile>. Maybe not the worst but certainly not
my cup of tea...

As for PC-Magazine, ummmm, I didn't renew my subscription as after
reading the net for 6 months it began to pale in comparison. I get
the feeling the people who write on that mag wouldn't stand a chance
on a two-way street like this...

Good points. However, I don't recall ever seeing a Clark Development ad, nor
one for RBBS-PC in PC Magazine, and both received good reviews. On the other
hand, I do recall seeing freqent ads for Galacticom, and it got flamed.

Don't forget that this article was specifically for multi-line BBS's, of which
there aren't many in the DOS environment. I would like to have seen a couple
of UNIX BBS's like Teammate reviewed.

PC Board does some things very well. In particular the
boring part: I don't call BBSs so that I can admire the
sysops ansi screens and ponder his most-excellent command
mappings.

I call BBSs so that I can read the messages and (rarely)
download files.

Clark Development has made it an axiom of PC Board's
interface that command mappings cannot be changed by the
user. This means that *every* PC Board I call has a common,
familiar interface; the board itself becomes transparent,
and all I see are the things I'm after: files and messages.

This regularity (which you call boring) in the command
structure has also lead to the existence of automated user
interfaces like Robocomm and off-line mail readers.

Non-boring boards (like, say, TBBS) which encourage the
sysop to exhibit his "brilliance" by making his board
completely different from every other TBBS also increase the
difficulty of supporting Robocomm and such.

I'll take "boring" BBS software every time.

Ditto - I connect to get a job done, ie: download files
(which I like TBBS - and is about the only thing TBBS
is good for) and read conferences (for which I haven't seen
a DOS based BBS which handled 1024+ conference areas
and supported networking) - oh and multiuser as well.
