Jazz on a summer night.
I suppose this should be Concord,
and Dave Brubeck;
but we're in Bristol,
in a tent, on the docks
and Barbara's blowing sax.

It's not trad jazz, or free jazz
(though it didn't cost me
a penny to get in),
but a modern big band,
playing hot tonight
and Barbara's blowing sax.

They're playing to celebrate
Bristol, and its history:
Irish tunes, Spanish themes,
music from Jamaica,
the old sea shanties
and Barbara's blowing sax.

Jazz on a summer night,
the last train home to Bath.
A tape on my Walkman,
fade out to the music,
I float with the brass,
and Barbara's blowing sax.
