John Parsons
Hendrik I, Duke of Brabant, 1165-1235, married Mathilde de Boulogne, ca.1161-
1210. No way is this one and the same person. But there is a link between
them, King Stephen and Mathilde, Countess de Boulogne, had a daughter,
Marie, who married Matthieu who became in his wife's right Count of
Boulogne. And this last couple are the parents of Mathilde, wife of
the Duke of Brabant, and that makes one the grandmother of the other.

Dear Raymond,
Even your 'subject' says Mathilda (not Mary!!!) de Boulogne, and Marie
de France was the SECOND wife, and Mathilda de Boulogne the FIRST.
I found the line you displayed very interesting---
Best wishes

Dear M.J.Richard,
Sadly you didn't sign your remark and so I don't know whether I am
addressing the correct person. You are quite correct telling that
Matthieu was married twice, his second wife, however, Eleonore Comtesse
de Vermandois, had no children by him. Matthieu and Marie de Boulogne
had two daughters : Ida, Comtesse de Bouglogne, and Mathilde who married
Hendrik I, Duke of Brabant. And so Mathilde (wife of King Stephen)
is the grandmother of the wife of the Duke of Brabant.
Best wishes,
Leo van de Pas

My response was to the original subject posted as 'Mathilda de BOULOGNE' -- so
Marie de France would have been incorrect as the subject of the discussion.
The line enclosed was the work of highly respected researchers worthy of note
on the forum.
Looking forward to your future postings. Surely they'll be as interesting as
those of the past.
All best,
Raymond J. Duquette

From a net post to Gen-Medieval:
In my pedigree (through the landgraves of Hessen), I have always shown the
mother of Heinrich II of Brabant as Mathilda of Boulogne(sometimes known as
Maud of Flanders). Eur. Stammtafeln, Neue Folge, Band I, Tafel 96: Die
Herzoge von Brabant und die Grafen von Loewen, shows that Heinrich I had no
children by his second wife, Marie of France, daughter of Philippe II.
Augustus.
According to the research my colleagues and I did, Henry I, Duke of Brabant,
and Marie of France did have at least one daughter, Elisabeth de Brabant, wife
of Thierry de Cleves, seigneur de Dinslaken. The proof for this is found in
the chronicle of Hainaut by Baudouin d'Avesnes. For more information see the
following article, pp. 210-211:

First, briefly, at first I thought there was a numbering problem here,
but now I see it is simply a misplaced space. In case anyone else was
confused, he was Eustace IV (not intended as a spelling flame, just a
clariication for those not looking closely). I think Hugh IV de St. Pol
was also son of Anselm and Eustachie.
More importantly, as to Eustachie, I do not know that she really belongs
here. This was proposed by Evans in the Genealogists Magazine, based on
three items of information: her given name, her toponym, and her
documented relationship to Henry II. Since the marriage of Stephen of
Champagne to Matilda of Boulogne brought the name Eustace (of which
Eustachie is the female equivalent) into the Champagne family (with the
known kinship between Stephen and Henry II), this seems a perhaps unique
confluence of these factors. However, in addition to the problem that
Eustace, tapped as father by Evans, had no known children, I have looked
a little (admittedly not all that hard) and failed to find a
contemporary reference to her being "of Champagne". In the recent
Family Trees and the Roots of Politics, Kathleen Thompson presents an
alternative placement, without discussing it an any detail, and without
mentioning the Evans theory at all. She places her as daughter of
William III of Gouet, whose mother was named Eustachie, and whose wife
was Mabel, bastard of Henry I (making her first cousin of Henry II). In
light of this, I think this issue requires more study.
