First, I have the HP 873N w/HP DVD Writer 200j...

My problem is that when i try and drag & drop files to my
DVD writer/CD writer it states (e:\ is not accessible,
incorrect function)....

Microsoft has a built-in cd writing software which allows
drag & drop writing...But mine is not working....

If I right click the e:\ drive and look under properties
there is no recording tab. (which there should be) I
think...

Does anyone one else with a HP 873n able to drag & Drop
within Windows XP?
Do you have the "Recording Tab"?

Second, If I put a blank CD or Blank DVD in my e:\drive
should it be able to see the blank disk?

Everytime I have been on the phone with HP Tech Support
they have not be able to help, plus everyone tells me a
different story...I have been on the phone with HP on 4
seperate occassions to no avail...(one tech rep stated
that the hp 873n does not have that feature of Drag &
Drop, and one stated that his does)

I have tried to use HP's DLA, ..DLA should have a feature
which allows you to make the CD disk compatable(if you
right click the CD) to be read by other computers....Mine
doesn't....

I have used some of MS Knowlegde Base suggestions to no
avail...

On my 3 other Windows XP machines, i'm able to drag &
drop files to be written to CD (a balloon will pop up on
my task bar stating files waiting to be written to disk)

Someone... (MVP) Please point me in the right direction...

A very confused MCE owner....

continue...

FYI....I have un-installed the HP DVD writer 200j, than
re-booted ..."no luck" and one tech told me to completely
removed the Drive, turn the machine back on without the
drive hooked up. Shut back down and plug the drive back
in...and guess what...it still doesn't work properly.....

What makes matter worse or confusing....it will allows me
to use the RecordNow software without any problems....

Have you recently uninstalled Roxio EXCD Creator?

I had a similar problem with my CD/DVD drives today.
After uninstalling some CD software I lost my drives in
windows explorer and also had exclamation points (!) in
the hardware section of device manager for both drives.

I called HP and was able to get the probem resolved.
They also sent me email with the fix for future reference.

My problem was solved in the section titled "Windows XP:
CDRW or DVD+RW Drive, does not show as a write-capable
drive". I started resolving the probem at Step 4:
Checking for errors in Device Manager and editing the
registry.

CAUTION: The following steps involve editing the Windows
registry. Editing the wrong values may cause Windows to
stop functioning.

Good Luck. I think it should work for you. If you need
help, I'd recommend you calling HP again and referring
them to this document:

No ...have not loaded any Roxio software...

The only "questionable" software loaded was Pinnacle
InstantCopy...But i Uninstalled it..(unless it has left
something in the registry, that has caused this problem)

Richard...thanks for the link...we tried all the things
on the troubleshooting, But, will try again .....

Thanks for the attention....
