This is a loathsome idea, IMHO.
Being old enough to remember Charlie's
Angels, I find any association to that
show, however remote, to be a big
turn-off. What are they thinking of???
I can only hope that this is Cinescape's
take on the Angel show, rather than
JW's. I hope to god he isn't thinking
of emulating Charlie's Angels. Maybe
it's finally time to get rid of the TV
(well, after the end of BtVS season
3, anyway).

If this is true, the supposed lack of acting talent won't have a damned thing
to do with it's failure.

It's Angel's Charmies damn it! Get it right!

Why do I get the feeling that this newsgroup is the source of
Cinemescape's "info"? Ah, I know. Everything they've mentioned has
been the subject of speculation, and in some cases, jokes, that we've
done.
As Wilkins would say, "Now, THAT'S a horrible thought". The
mainstream press is actually taking what WE say seriously?!!!
Hmm, let's get some outlandish rumors going here, keep repeating them
until any unsuspecting soul peeking in takes them as fact, and see
what ends up getting "reported". :)
Oh, wait, we've been doing that :)

Why? Despite its reputation as a t&a-fest, "Charlie's Angels" wasn't that
bad of a show. The acting was acceptable (except in the last couple of
seasons, when horrors like Tanya Roberts were put on the screen), the plots
were OK (no ongoing plotlines like BtVS, but those were very rare on action
shows until recently), the production values were good, and there really
wasn't that much t&a by todays standards (more hair and fashion).
>What are they thinking of???
Maybe the fact that "Charlie's Angels" was a successful show that ran for
several seaons (five or six, IIRC).
Of course, if they really copied that show, the Angel fans would be very
disappointed, because it would mean DB wouldn't actually appear onscreen. I
don't think they'll be doing that.

Here's one for you. I am dating James Marsters. Story:
"Yes, this posting cutie and the virile vamp from TV's Buffy are one hot item
these days. Seems they are seen all over town, wearing black and creating a
stir the hottest clubs! An inside source reports seeing the two sitting on a
sofa in a bohemian coffee house, smooching away...when he appeared to kiss her
neck Roazie reportedly gave a scream and went limp."

This all sounds like the description of "Star Trek" as "Wagon Train in Space".
Obviously the day-timers are going to end up doing the bulk of the legwork.
But then, don't they always? How much time does Buffy actually spend doing
research on the latest menace?
Cool! Wonder if Matt Drudge lurks here? He got most of his "inside
info" from alt.showbiz.gossip (which he claimed was his great
investigative skills). It amazes me that anyone still gives Drudge
credibility.

There's been an increasing amount of net rumors, and jokes mistaken
for stories, turning up in the mainstream press. Matt Drudge, for
example, has built his career on reading gossip newsgroups, with all
their jokes and entertaining outlandish speculation, and printing it
as "investigative reporting".
The Today Show manged to get fooled by a net April Fools Joke a couple
of weeks back. I don't remember what the details were, but it was a
joke from some Austrailians, and the Today Show reported it the next
day as a news item.
Scary as it sounds, the mainstream press thinks Usenet is a legitimate
source of info. You'd think they'd at least credit their damn
sources, though.

And Franklin sucked in another one!
Here is a copy of the original post in this newsgroup which started
this whole thing:
=====================================================================
I found this article about the new Angel series. Can anyone confirm
any of the rumors?
-- Franklin
WB Newswire (WB)
January 21, 1999 3:15 pm PT
Los Angeles -- Rumors are flying fast and furious in the wake of money
disputes between Fox Television and the WB Network over the hit
television series, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". In the midst of this
fray, series executive producer Joss Whedon today outlined casting and
strategy changes for next year's "Buffy" spinoff series.
"I'm very pleased that Elizabeth Anne Allen will be joining the new
series as a regular," Whedon began. "She's a marvelous performer,"
Whedon explained, "and the character of Amy the Witch is mega-popular
with the fans."
Whedon countered recent speculation that Allen would be unable to join
the new cast. "That rumor was only partly true," Whedon admitted.
"Once we were in negotiations, it was such a rat's nest, it took a
while to undo," he said.
The new show's previously announced cast include "Buffy" regulars David
Boreanaz (Angel), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), Eliza Dushku (Faith),
and previous Buffy guest star, Max Perlich (Whistler). Whedon has also
confirmed that "Buffy" star Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy) and regulars
Alyson Hannigan (Willow) and Nicholas Brendon (Xander) will make
occasional appearances in the spinoff series.
David Boreanaz was also on hand to offer a glimpse into the show's new
direction. "We're taking the show in a different direction, more LA,
more current, more Y2K," he said.
Whedon also announced the series, previously named "Angel", would be
titled "Angel's Charmies". "I met with executives at Warner and they
felt the new name and direction would peak the ratings faster", Whedon
explained. "They're really under bidding pressure from Fox," he said.
Series star Boreanaz explained the new direction, "I'll still be
fighting the bad guys, but with a new premise." Boreanaz elaborated,
"Cordelia was a Queen, Amy was a Witch, and Faith was a Slayer." He
added, "But I took them away from all all that up and now they work for
me. My name is Angel."
"Charisma, Eliza and Elizabeth are so charming, the name made total
sense," Whedon said. "They'll be going to college in the morning and
fighting demons in the afternoon," he added.
Describing co-star Max Perlich's role as Whistler, actor Boreanaz said,
"I can't help the girls during the day, 'cause I'm a vampire. So
Whistler will be my eyes and ears."
Series producer Whedon finshed, "I'm all tingly with the fantastic
acting talent and creative team we've got behind this new series.
It'll be a hoot."
Will "Angel's Charmies'" new name and new direction bring Whedon top
the success he's already had with "Buffy"? "I hope so", says Whedon,
"I really need a new yacht."

You will note that some of the quotes in the Cinescape article are
pulled directly from Franklin's post. And other points in it come from
the "I'm undead and all that" misquote of something CC said in an
interview.

Ah, the indominatable spirit of Cordelia:
Whistler: "But you're dead!"
Cordelia: "And the big deal would be?"
Whistler: "You have to lie down. You're making me look bad in front of
the other demons."
Cordelia: "First of all, dead? Passé. Secondly, anyone with a
teaspoonful of brains knows not to take my dying seriously, especially
with my extenuating circumstance."
Whistler: " What extenuating circumstance?"
Cordelia: "Broke! Look it up!"

Why do I get the feeling that this "reporter" graduated from the cut
and paste school of journalism?

Just goes to show you can't believe everything you read online. The
*real* synopsis of 'Angel' is, of course, that he shares an apartment in
LA with Cordelia and Faith, and he has to pretend he's gay to avert
suspicion from the nosey landlord (and they all have to hide their
fourth roommate Amy's cage because of the building's 'No pets' policy)
VMacek
No, no, no. The REAL synopsis is Angel opens a bar, filled with
vampire memorabelia, with Whistler as bartender. Cordy ends up stuck
in town and needs a job, so Angel hires her as a waitress. She's
constantly hitting him with sarcastic jabs, their verbal sparring
masking a growing attraction between them. Meanwhile, they'll have
their regular patrons, including Anya, who's constantly trying to
impress everyone with trivia.

oh yeahh, I thought Angel looked familiar. The tag line that'll become
popular:
Angel: ID please.
Anya: I'm 1000 years old-just give me a frickin' beer!
Mere speculation, of course. The real poop on 'Angel's Charmies'?
"A darker, edgier spinoff of 'Buffy', Angel returns to his roots and
regains his Irish accent. As his young charges on the front lines
battle it out, he philosophically muses 'They're *always* after me lucky
Charmies!' "

He regains that accent? I'm frightened already.
(I've read that his wife is actually Irish, so I'm wondering: Doesn't he
ever *listen* to her?)
