Previously I used Widnows 98 that has a Windows Family Logon, recently I
have
upgraded it to Windows ME, now I can't find this client, there are Microsoft
Network, Netware Network and Windows logon options to allow me to select in
the
Windows ME, how can I install Windows Family Logon in Windows ME?
Thanks in advance!
Wang.

In Control Panel | Network, click Add | Client | Add. Among the
choices that it shows should be "Microsoft Family Logon". That's the
one you want.

I'm sorry, but I've never seen "Windows Family Logon" in any version
of Windows. To the best of my knowledge, there's no such thing.
I'm guessing that you really want "Microsoft Family Logon". When
installed and specified as the primary network logon, it presents a
list of known user names at logon time and asks you to select one.
Is that what you want? If so, here's what to do:
1. Go to Control Panel | Network.
2. Click the "Add" button.
3. Click "Client".
4. Click the "Add" button.
5. Select "Microsoft Family Logon" from the list.
6. Click OK.
7. Go to Control Panel | Network.
8. Click the right arrow under "Primary Network Logon".
9. Select "Microsoft Family Logon" from the list.
If you've been seeing "Windows Logon" as one of the choices, you must
be starting at #7 above, not at #1. "Windows Logon" doesn't appear in
the list of clients that can be added in #5, but it does appear in the
list of primary network logons in #9.
My problem is that there is no Microsoft Family Logon in the list for
Windows ME, I only found it in the list for Windows 98.
Is there a way to install or import it from CD or diskette?
Thanks again.
Wang.

Please take another look at the steps that I listed above and follow
steps 1-5 exactly as I gave them. What exactly does the screen show,
and what exactly do you see in the list?
In an earlier message, you said that "Windows Logon" appears in the
list. That indicates to me that you're looking in the wrong list.
"Windows Logon" isn't a network client, and it doesn't appear in the
list of network clients that you can add in step #5. If you're seeing
"Windows Logon", you must be looking at the list of primary network
logons in step #9. That's the wrong list.
As you have seen here, some how people are able to install Windows ME in such a way that protocols like IPX and NetBeui are not available and have to be extracted from the CD.
This person already explained they installed it fine with Win98, so clearly they know how to do it. Asking them 3 times to follow your steps won't make it magically re-appear.
The file he will need to extract is NETFAM.INF
Click Start, click Run, type MSCONFIG (hit enter), click the button labeled "Extract File." For the name of the file you want to restore, type NETFAM.INF. Restore from your Windows Millennium CD (if your CD is your D: drive, type: D:\WIN9X). Save File In: C:\WINDOWS\INF.
Then back in your network properties, click Add, click Client, click Add, and Microsoft Family Logon should appear.

Please don't take the point of my message wrong. Steve is much more knowledgeable about networking than I am and has helped many more people than I. I just got a little frustrated seeing him post the same solution 3 times in row, when clearly that was not the solution needed. So I just jumped in. No disrespect intended towards Mr. Winograd. I don't know what we would do without him here.

Thank you very much for your kind words, Carey. You also perform a
valuable service here, and our different styles undoubtedly help more
people than either one of us alone would. Everyone who contributes to
the news group is helping!
As I recall the previous series of messages, Wang Wei Hua stated
repeatedly that there's something called "Windows Family Logon" and
that "Windows Logon" appears in the list of network clients that can
be added. Neither of those is true, so I thought that we were
mis-communicating. I was just trying to make my message clearer and
more concise to avoid further misunderstanding and solve the problem.

Steve's Networking FAQ - Updated April 29, 2001

It's so easy to mis-interpret what is posted, you and I can read the same message and offer two different solutions for two different problems. It's all about how concise and elaborate the original question is.
Since we are on opposite ends of the 'field', I think that really benefits the people who come here looking for an answer to a question. Ron Lowe has also been extremely helpful here on a regular basis.
It's nice to get a pat on the back every now then, and you and Ron certainly deserve them.
