THE self-described "most famous gay man in Canada" says pop star Celine
Dion is turning gays against her by suing him because he printed a
harmless bit of gossip.
Michel Girouard, gossip columnist for French-Canadian tabloid Allo
Vedettes, says the diva's ego is "out of control." He charges her
manager-husband Rene Angelil is trying to strong-arm the press. And he
vows he'll never apologize for running the item, originally printed in
Star magazine, which claimed Dion and Angelil rented a Las Vegas hotel
swimming pool so she could sunbathe topless and skinny dip.
Dion sued Girouard for defamation this week, blasting the tale as
"false" and claiming it's damaged their reputation to the tune of $5
million.
"The story is not something very terrible - everyone bathes naked in
Vegas," Girouard told PAGE SIX. "It has been reprinted everywhere, but
she only sues me? It is because her husband is trying to control the
media [in Quebec]. When Rene doesn't like pictures or stories he gets
them destroyed," Girouard claims.
He continues, "Celine just wants press. She is attacking the most famous
gay man in Canada - me - and you cannot go against the gay community.
She has no real reason to sue me - she knows it will get her publicity.
She knows I am friends with Prince Egon von Furstenberg and used to be
friends with Gianni Versace. She knows people pay attention to me.
"Celine thinks she is Lady Di. When she christened her baby [on July
25], she had a motorcade of 10 police cars in front of her car - like
they do only for the Queen of England or Fidel Castro."
Girourd says Dion's "attack" on him has caused a "gay scandal. I am a
gay icon," Girourd stated. "There was a poll taken and 83 percent of the
population is against her. The gay community supported me, and now she
alienates them."
As for Dion's hoped-for retraction, Girouard sniffs, "When the Star
retracts its story, we will retract ours."
Dion's rep, Kim Jakwerth, says: "Celine is suing because Girouard
printed something false, not because he's gay. Celine has a lot of gay
friends and has always supported the gay community - and they will
continue to support her and she them."
A month ago, Dion, who's still on hiatus, and Angelil baptized their
6-month-old son Rene Charles at Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal.

Actually, this Michel Girouard's main accomplishment, and it's not a small
one, was the first public figure ( he is in the entertainment field) in
Quebec, maybe in Canada also, to come out of the closet some 30 years ago.
It took a lot of guts to do so at that time when none of the actual laws
against discrimination existed. Even the term "gay" was not yet a word used
at large. By this move, he helped a lot of gays to stop their double life
and come out publicly. In that sense, he is a real icon and a hero to many
gays and non gays.. On the other hand, to use this goodwill against Celine
is a big mistake. In my opinion, this is not a question of gay bashing.
Celine has many influencial friends in the gay world and she has contributed
on many occasions in the fight against AIDS, a cause dear to the gay
leadership. On the other hand, I don't agree that Celine, and in particular,
her husband, should use the public's court system for such a petty matter as
nude bathing.
