I usually don't do tech chats because, to be totally honest, it doesn't
interest me. I watch it to see if there is something of interest, but I am
not a "tech head". But no one did a summary and there have been several
posts asking for one. So I felt obligated.

Anyway, here it goes:

Cool opening to the Tech Chat that is reminiscent of something on ZDTV.

Mike Dugan (President and COO of Echostar) welcomes us to the tech chat and
immediately hands it off to the Mr. Rogers of the technical world and new
head of E* technologies: Mark Jackson.
Dave and Mike are also present as usual.
Parting comment by Mike Dugan: "I think I got voted off the show by
DBSDish.com before they changed their name.

Video tape of "The best of Mike Dugan and Tech Chat runs."

Tonight's agenda:
--Video tape on the fundamentals of satellite technology
--Dish DVD (5400) unveiling
--HDTV, Model 6000 and optional 8VSB tuner cartridge
--Cascade solution (No it isn't made with dish washing detergent either) for
Dish switches
--Tech Updates
--Hot Topics
--DishPlayer (how to avoid answering hundreds of questions)
--NEW SW44 switch
--Dish Interactive
--Updates from the last tech forum

Let's roll the satellite technology video tape with Dan Landreth Part 2 of
3--
This is a very informative video on how satellite orbits and signals work.

Mark introduces the giveaways for the night. A 7200 receiver and a 6000
receiver. WOW!!!!

Moving along: Let's introduce the 5400 receiver. A satellite receiver and
DVD player in one

Let's roll the video-tape with Wendell "I can't read those cue cards with
feeling" Blackman.

The Dish DVD receiver has: Optical DD output, IR Remote, Themes Lists,
Favorites (no mention as to what kind, how many channels it holds etc.),
Event timers, 2 day Electronic Program Guide, Locks (no cream cheese option
though), Alternate audio, S-Video output, Accessory jack and available with
a Dish 500.
But WAIT! There's more! (Actually, it was read, "But this --is--just
the--begi--ning. ---there--is much more -- to -- this amazing pro-duct".
DVD Specific controls including 4 forward and 4 reverse speeds, IR Blaster,
On Screen Menu and Status, 2 sets of Audio/Video output jacks, AC3/PCM,
S/PIDF optical output (isn't this the Optical DD output he mentioned at the
beginning of this sleigh ride?), Pass-through Channel 3/4 RF (explosive
space) modulator with in and out connections (I guess that's for the ecstasy
channel).
DVD features: Title, audio channels, viewing angles, subtitles in more
languages than you can read, Chapter search, ff, rew and slow motion forward
and reverse, and frame by frame, time date and time elapsed on the banner
(ooooo!)

The video mercifully ends.

Mr. Rogers (AKA Mark Jackson) recaps the video tape.

Mark asks a question of Dave (read it as if Mr. Rogers was saying it): "So
Dave, what is this PCM optical output?"
It's an optical output for both Dolby digital and Stereo---Moron!
"So do the little boys and girls out there have to get anything special at
the store when they buy a new model 5400?"
You have to have a receiver that supports optical cables to use the optical
output jack.---moron!
"Oh, that sounds pretty good. I'm going to have to ask Mr. Mcphebee to get
one of those for me! Can you say condescending? I knew you could."

The 5400 is coming in August. (Noticed they didn't say what year)
approximately $349 stand alone and 399 with dish 500!

Question time 1
E-mail-Will this unit have component video outputs?
Answer from Dave: NO! S-video and composite only.

Call from Claude: Load Isolator to run two SW64 in parallel? (keep in mind,
this guy is a dealer/installer)
Tossing to the peanut gallery---
Just got them and you need to call your dealer or Dish Network. We highly
recommend that you have a professional installation done because it's
complicated.

HDTV Time
Lets roll the video tape explaining HDTV with Doreen Lundbergh

Doreen joins the panel and wants to go over the features of the 6000
receiver:
-2 HDTV outputs
---component Y, Pr, Pb--or Luminance [black and white info], Red, Blue
---RGB (Red Green Blue))
- HD outputs in:
--- 1080i (1080 horizontal scan lines interlaced)
--- 720p (720 horizontal scan lines not interlaced--progressive)
- 5 viewing modes (that distort the picture) allowing a 4 by 3 (standard TV
image) to fill up the 16 by 9 (HDTV) screen
- HDTV Down conversion to standard definition
- Hardware upgradeable (8VSB tuner coming sometime in the future)
- Replaceable software bugs with satellite software upgradability.
- IR/UHF remote
- S Video out
- RCA outputs
$499 for the receiver
Tuner cartridge available in summer 2000 for $100.
Available NOW!

Badly asked questions by Mark of Mike deleted. Info was included above.

Doreen's FAQ on the 6000
Q: Will I need a second Dish antenna to get HDTV channels?
A: it sort of depends, but YES unless you have a dish already pointing at
the 61.5° satellite.

Q: What HD programming is available?
A: HBO, Showtime. Later PPV and a demo channel.

Q: Can I receive local over the air HDTV programs?
A: Yes... once you get the optional tuner cartridge.

Q: Does the model 6000 support 720p and 1080i?
A: Yes

Q: If my TV has Y,Pr,Pb inputs, can I receive HDTV from the 6000?
A: Yes...as long as the TV is HDTV and supports 720p or 1080i ONLY!

Question Time 2:
Emails ask: Will the 6000 be upgradable to OPEN TV.
A: NO!

Call from Andrew: Is the 3800 upgradable to Open TV?
A: Yes, but we have no clue when.

Call from Michael: I have a mitsubishish hdtv ready. Is the model 6000 with
the set-top box?
Answer: The 6000 (with the tuner option) takes the place of the set-top box.
You do not need to buy the decoder.
The 5000 HDTV adapter will not work.

Call from Ian: I have two dishes (500) with two twins with 4 receivers since
I don't want to have an SW64. When is the quad coming? How much? and is
there going to be an upgrade program?
A: Under development, coming this summer, we have no idea how much and don't
hold your breath.

Call from Bruce: Receiver with two tuners that allow you to record one
channel and watch another...when is it coming?
A: We're working on it "Don't hold your breath."

Email: Will the 5400 pass DTS audio
A: NO
Mark: Will it ever
A: I don't think so. I'll check.

Cascading switch solutions are explained. Twins to SW21 solution in
available on all receivers except the ones I own. the 1000, 2000, 3000 and
4000. DVHS upgrade coming soon.

4 new satellites going up soon.
E*6 going up July 15 at 1:21am on channel 100.
E*7 Spot beam satellite at 119° some time Q4 in 2001.
E*8 ditto, 2002 at 110°
E*9 to 121° C/Ku/Ka system with Loral.

New uplink facility going on line in Arizona will support some of these
satellites as well as back up to Cheyenne.

Hop Topic time:
Quad LNBf coming in late summer
Gilat satellite Internet system coming to "rural America"
"RURAL America"
R-U-R-A-L America.
translation: where cable systems are non-existent and DsL means Daisy Lou

Question time 3:
Call from Dave: When do you expect to have a one dish solution for HD?
A: No time soon. Maybe after E*8.

You can call me Al: What's the pricing , when is it coming and can I hook
it up to a small network at home?
A: Preliminary info: In about October $3-400 for the equipment plus
installation and $70+ or - for the service for 1 Mbit to 150kb/sec depending
of number of users. The system comes with a PC. In 2001 you will get a USB
bus.

Call in from Tom: Pixelization sucks!
A: Sure does. We're working on it.

Email Q: Will there be an SWx6 supporting 6 receivers?
A: (a long way to go for) NO. See the first question for the end result.

Email: How do we know the format of the HDTV signal
A: You don't need to know.

Now to the DishPlayers:
Working on "Check-Switch" screen with latest software release coming now.
Cascade software release coming soon.
Loosing open ISP functions is a bug being worked on.
Also a minuscule, imaginary, ultra-unimportant, ridiculously small problem
that has been reported and that is a barely audible (to a deaf person)
popping in the audio of the Dish Players: It is there--even though I never
heard it---and we know what's causing it and we THINK we can fix it. It
requires changes at the uplink center. We'll let you know.
But it is such a minuscule, imaginary, ultra-unimportant, ridiculously small
problem that only audiophiles with the best equipment ever manufactured and
putting their ear up to the left speaker can hear it. (This won't piss
anyone off will it?)

A tape runs on the Dish Player features with Laurie Farkas

Call from Steven: HDTV channels have low volume in comparison to other
channels.
A: Happens with all DD channels. They want as much headroom as possible
which keeps the base audio very low relative to the regular channels. It's
not as bad as it used to be.

Call from Bob: How does Gilat compare in speed versus a 56k line, DSL or
Cable.?
A: DSL is a better value. We limit the amount of customers on the system at
the same time by switching transponders, his is geared to those that cannot
get Cable or DSL.

Call from Martin: How come transponders have different signal strengths
A: E*4 is at the higher power to get service to Alaska and Hawaii

Call from Arthur (And he says "HEY! what a wonderful time to play! HEY!"):
The 6000 receiver originally was shown to have an RF output (Channel 3/4).
What happened to it?
A: Too much stuff in the box and we couldn't fit it...yeah, that's the
ticket, yeah....I was talking to my wife ...Morgan Fairchild about
that....yeah, that's the ticket.
After-market products are available.

Call from Richard: Who's this!
Tech forum talking;
Cool dood! What a rush!
Should I get a Dish 500 and swing my extra dish to 61.5°. Will I get a
decent HD signal on my Realistic/AOC army green 19" TV with the
state-of-the-art veractor tuner?
A: The only reason you want to see 61.5° is if you have the model 6000

Email: Will we have a software upgrade to create manual timers on Dish
players.
A: That's WebTV's problem.

Emails: is there a way to protect a recorded events on Dishplayers.
A: No.

Dishplayer upgrade offer:
call 303-706-4788
DO NOT CALL THE CALL CENTER THEY WILL HAVE NO CLUE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING
ABOUT!!!!

Question Time 5:
Emails: Press release about WINK.
A: Transaction interface for purchases, etc.

Emails: 4 digit channel numbers in the favorites list?
A: I think 4700 supports them.. 5000 is in the works.

Email:Can you turn off the screen savers in the Dish Player
A: No and we never have given it any though. Why would you want to turn off
screen savers? You'll hurt your TV.

Jackie in Miss: Will Gilat have rain fade issues.
A: Not as bad, but it will have some issues.

Call from Ed (fighting the delay): Will E*6 help the signal in Puerto Rico?
A: No

Good reporting does not include frequent trashing many of the things
being reported. Your report would be good if it were not for your
obvious bad attitude and feelings toward Dish Network.

I'll bet many of the our readers would be interested to see some of the
clowns and complainers who frequently post here attempt to host an
informative program such as a Charlie Chat or the Tech Forum. Then we
might see what little substance you guys really have.

Regardless of the numerous sniper attacks at Dish Network and Echostar,
this customer appreciates their efforts and the efforts of their staff
to keep us informed. Are there any other companies who provide such a
public service to their customers?

Let's give Dish Network a chance and for those who are not happy with
them, you only have to disconnect and go to a competitor. We sure won't
miss you here!

I can't speak for Tony, but previous posts lead me to
believe he is an avid DISH supporter. I find his charlie
chat summaries very entertaining, and yes his first tech
chat forum was good also. What's wrong with adding humor?

Keep up the good work, Tony!

I enjoyed Tony's humor in the summary. I'm a "Dish Lover" and I saw
nothing wrong with it.

Thanks Tony! I have been waiting for several days for a recap as I am
never home at the right time.

Chill out dude. Satire != disparagement.

He pokes fun at the SHOW, not the intent nor the information
it provides. For every one person here who doesn't like
Tony's chat recaps, there are probably 9 who do.

This reminds me of a recent post in another newsgroup
where A guy just couldn't get it through his head
how you could like (love?) something and still
find fault with it. The typical reply was: If
you find fault with your child's behavior, does
that mean that you don't love him/her?

Absolutism is the enemy of rational thought, absolutely.

Wow. Wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?

I think Echostar is a great company. I also think the review of the tech chat
was right on thew money.

I appreciate what they (DiSH) have given me and other subscribers too...
I have often been flamed as a DiSH Ringer in this NG...

I also LOVE to poke fun at Charlie and Jim and the late Mike Dugan (sorry
Mike, the others on the Island kicked you out! You're Toast!) and the
others...

Now, if you REALLY believe that more people want to watch Cricket and not
NFL Football, then DiSH is the system for your Sports viewing. (Yes even
Charlie would make fun of it when the question of NFL Ticket was posed by
saying that Cricket was more exciting to watch...) <g>

I know others have already flamed you for taking Tony to task, but I needed to
add my two cents- I know of VERY few people on this NG who are bigger
supporters of DISH than Tony!

>I'll bet many of the our readers would be interested to see some of the

Perhaps. But just because I can't cook doesn't mean I can't tell Sirloin from
Steak-Umms, does it?

>Regardless of the numerous sniper attacks at Dish Network and Echostar,

No. I, like many of us (including Tony) love the chats- that doesn't mean we
can't poke fun. Think of Tony's summaries as a sort of Mystery Science Theater
3000. Tony just fills in the role of Joel and the Robots for us. We are just
having FUN! Lighten up, will you?

Was the guy who did the DISH/DVD film NOT horrible, for example? I could
forgive that if he were live and nervous, but it was a TAPE! DISH couldn't
find ANYBODY who could sucessfully read a cue card to do the pre-recorded
segment? Where was Brian Olsen? Hell, even Brittany Troisi could've given a
better read! I normally love tech chats, but frankly, without Mr. Dugan at the
helm, this one was PAINFUL to watch!

>Let's give Dish Network a chance and for those who are not happy with

>miss you here!

Huh? I guy tosses a few jokes about a chat and you're going to send him to the
competition? Airline employees take jokes about bomb threats better than you
take a few harmless jokes about DISH!

I, for one would miss Tony dearly if he left the NG. He's a fervent DISH
supporter, but not a DISHciple- there's a different between supporting a
product and company and worshiping it! Tony, a long-time Sky Angel customer,
already has a perfectly good deity to worship and doesn't need any false 18"
idols! :-)

I think if we took a vote and asked the participants of this NG who we'd miss
more- Tony or YOU, well... let's just say we wouldn't likely need a recount.

And some people would complain about the price of admission to a free
movie/concert, too, wouldn't they?

Come on there 'Ed543' - the folks that posted the summary did so *by
request*, and took *their own* valuable time to do so.

If they want to interject their own feelings, then that is the price of
admission - but complaining about someone's editorializing when they write
up these summaries makes you *no* better than you seem to imply these folks
are.

Life with Dish isn't always a bed of roses. I've been accused in the past
of being a 'dish/echostar brown noser' or the equivalent there-of, but I
also know that there are problems that Dish doesn't recognize, even when
clear and concise questions are sent to them, or when clear and concise
issues lists are sent to them.

Meanwhile, whenever you want to take your valuable time to post a summary of
anything you see on Dishnetwork news, one of the chats, or anything else
that would be considered a valuable contribution, jump right in with both
feet. I'm sure some of these other folks might like to have back the two
hours plus that it took to watch the chat and then write a summary about it.

'nuff said!

- and please note, sitting on your hands and not making someone at Dish
aware that you have issues/concerns/complaints, or just leaving Dish
completely, without telling Dish why won't make things any better either.
Not for yourself, and not for the next customer that buys Dish.

I like Dish (a lot) and enjoy the programming I get and the features I get
in my (sometimes buggy) Dishplayers, and wouldn't consider leaving them for
anyone else, but I also know that they have more than their fair share of
un-informed employees, and bad customer service reps, and that their
technical people many times don't know about, or at least won't acknowledge
problems that do exist in their system(s). If someone doesn't bring the
issues to light though, Dish would never know about them, and nothing would
ever change.

Meanwhile, if we just so happen to think that the folks that they (Dish) put
on the TV to talk to us in these chats look like a bunch of keystone cops,
then we have every right to say just that.

So I guess the sarcasm and humor was lost on you. Loosen up. You'll live
longer.

And as an FYI, I direct live TV shows for the access of all things. I am
very aware just how hard it is to put on a live show. I am very aware of
just how cheesy things can look.

Finally, I have stated many times that I make fun of Dish Networks forums
the way a friend would give another a hard time about embarrassing moments
or successes. I am a HUGE DiSH network supporter. I am not a reporter. I
am a VERY satisfied subscriber with a sarcastic sense of humor about Dish's
weaknesses letting others know what happened during the chats. If you
don't like my style, simply ignore the posts. I go by Angel A. Suarez,
Angel Antonio Suarez, TNGTony and Tony@Work

Please do a search in deja.com with the words "Charlie Chat Summary" to see
the other summaries I do and some of the reactions. It is purely in jest.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have my lunch waiting for me and it's not crow.
(Though it is from KFC, so it may very well be crow!)

And to think, I've been spending all that time with my new child, getting my
news from Tony's summary when I could have been in front of the tube.

Tony, don't worry, your humor wasn't lost on all of us.

Having missed the Tech Chat, I have been checking in here on and
off for the last couple of days. When I saw the header, I was
filled with anticipation. When I saw who posted, I started
reading with a wry smile and finished with a huge
grin.

Although it has been already stated, let this webtver add
his props for Tony!

BTW....has anyone heard or seen from
Ed???
