Fries, Virginia, Fiddler's Convention -- August 20-21, 1999 at the Ball
Park in Fries (pronounced freeze -- at least in the winter) by the river.
A
nice, mostly local, festival, a relief after Galax. Competition both
nights in the usual categories including autoharp. Free camping (bring
your own shade);
contestants get admission price back on the day they play
on stage. Fries was the home of early recording pioneers Grayson &
Whitter

Like this one, some of the fesitvals listed are for last year while others
are for this year.

smaller. Contact the Fries

Maybe Whitter, Carl, but I think that Grayson was from Laurel Bloomery, TN.

Hi, guys-
I'm forewarding your request to my friends the Hollandsworths, who are regular
attenders at Fries/Freeze. And wonderful folks, to boot.
(BTW- dont make the trip in one long drive- best to stop in Conshohocken on the
way...

Fries is a great little fiddler's convention. Definately one of our favorites!
It's very local with a few visitors from the Asheville and Greensboro/Chapel
Hill scenes with occasional foreign visitors left over from Galax. My very
favorite part is when they give out the prizes the firemen line up at the side
of the stage and each one is holding the ribbons for a different catagory, they
take this very seriously and it is very cute. Anyway the music is great and so
is the dancing.
The camping used to be free but I think they now charge $10.
We woudn't miss it!! Nancy
