I never read the book, I only saw the movie with Jeremy Irons. Even at
that, I had to go look up "Humbert Humbert" to refresh my memory anyway, so

"Protagonist" only in the sense that he was relatively less vile than Clare
Quilty.

watching the original Stanley Kubrick version of the movie, starring James
Mason, Sue Lyons, (she was 14 when the film was made, and, per the law, not
old enough to see herself in the film in a theatre).. Shelly Winters, and
Peter Sellers.. This is yet another classic masterpiece that didn't need to
be re-made. At all. Ever. Period..

One thing (among many others) that outraged me about the remake was that
Melanie Griffith was much too attractive to portray Lolita's mother. I felt no
empathy for Irons' perceived hopeless marital dilemma, whereas Shelly Winters
convincingly portrayed a smothering monster that would drive any
self-respecting man to murder, much less child molestation. Kathy Bates or
Kathleen Turner would have been much more suitable. I also did not need to see
Frank Langella in a horrifying scene of full frontal nudity that surely must
have taken its toll on Whoopie Goldberg too.

learn that remaking classic films is just an utter waste of time and
resources.. I guess when they figure out that taking popular teevee series
from the 50s and 60s and turning them into $100 million movies is also
stupid.. Wild Wild West? The Flintstones? Dozens of others??.. C'mon.. what
a joke..
A friend and I have this running joke about how eventually they will turn
"Hazel" into a $100 million movie..
And.. they remade Fail Safe!?!? :( ..

Figures. Herk Harvey's 60's masterpiece freaked me out when I saw it as a
young teen. Hollywood, please leave this one alone. You got stupid with
"Little Shop"; don't get stupid here.
For those who remember the original "Little Shop of Horrors", Mel Welles
played Gravis Mushnik to a T; but, boy oh boy, I think Ed O'Ross could
bring that character off almost as well.

So far, it has escaped a big screen sequel. Warner Brothers DID try twice
to spin it off into a television series. First in 1956, and then again in
1981 with David Soul as Rick Blaine, Hector Elizondo as Captain Renault, and
Scatman Crothers as Sam. They both died quick, fiery, well-deserved deaths.
On the much better side, the best tribute came from Bugs (Rick), Daffy
(Sam), and Tweety Bird (Ugarte) and company with "Carrotblanca," which was
hilarious. It was the only one I ever saw, but based on what I saw in the
documentary "You Must Remember This," included on the excellent "Casablanca"
DVD, I didn't miss anything. Let's hope they leave this one alone.

If you haven't seen it .. trust me ... the 1998 remake is awful! By far, one
of the worst movies I have ever had to sit through.
