I get the following Error message when I try to open an existing
illustration:
______________________________________________________
Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains an illegal operand.

Offending operator: "M"
Context:

% (1.047198)/String(BBAccumRotation) ,
% ;
%
OR
0.37 0.0078 0.1333 OK
4w--M
______________________________________________________
All appears to be there in the open dialog box preview window, but the file
will not open. Is there anyway to recover it. I'm new to Illustrator and
this NG.
Thanks for your help.

Randy

This was a file-saving bug in 9.0 that was fixed in 9.0.1. What I can't
remember is whether 9.0.1 can open the corrupted file or not -- I don't
think that it can. You may be out of luck.

Try opening a new document. Then go File>Place. Find the corrupted file
and place it into the new one. This has saved a me a tremendous amount of
work. Maybe you can save your this way too. Good luck!

Thank You!!!! It worked great - but as the file was saved as an ".ai" file -
none of those files showed up in the
file open window as being an optional file type. I was wondering why? I just
ignored this and typed in the full
file name and extension....ten seconds later the file was opened and I
decided to save it as an ".eps" file.

Also if anyone can give their opinion on what file type to saveas, I'd
appreciate it, and are there any advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks again...

On a MAC when you use the PLACE command, in the File window that appears
there is a scroll down menu with choices for all available file types. The
default is All Readable Documents but there is an option All Documents.
When you choose All Docs, all files including AI's are revealed. Why AI
files don't show up when selecting the All Readable Docs option is a mystery
to me since I'm absolutely positive beyond a meson's shadow of a doubt that
Illustrator 9 can read files created on Illustrator 9........and all
previous versions as well. Maybe Adobe didn't anticipate people using the
PLACE command to open AI files but I've got to say, PLACE sure works great
when one of your sweated-over creations suddenly becomes corrupted due to a
buggy program and you think you may never be able to open it again.

Someone passed this tip on to me several months ago when I was in the same
position as you were. And for that, I am eternally grateful. Strange, I
originally posted this problem on the Adobe forums and, although people from
Adobe participate in discussions and answer questions on a regular basis, no
one there seemed to have a solution to this disaster with the exception of
one guy, not affiliated with Adobe BTW, who made the suggestion (a
reasonable one) that I might open the file in MS Word and try to find the
one line of bad code in what turned out to be 450 pages written in some
language that looked deceptively like English, though certainly not any
dialect I am familiar with........ God! All I ever wanted to do on a
computer was make art. Anyway, you might try opening one of your AI files
in a word processor. Its interesting. I believe this is really what they
call EPS. Encapsulated Post-Script. Which is basically what an AI file is.
With a few alterations?

Maybe this solution is one of those things that just works but was never
planned. Anyway, it does work. And I am glad to have been able to pass it
on to you and to anyone else that might read this and need it at some
desperate moment in the future.

Also, in all fairness, since I've updated to 9.02 I have not had any
problems what so ever and Illustrator is working like a charm. It is a
great and fantastic program!
