Yeah, 'cause Beetle Bailey is the last strip in the world known
to add a character right when it's two or three years past trendy.

even *try* double clicking? And worst of all, they're going to *pun*ish us

It was described as a "compressed" TIFF file. This threw me off, since
I thought TIFF is an uncompressed format. But a Google search revealed
that there are various kinds of "compressed TIFFS", which, it seems,
might require special programs to de-compress and view.
Meanwhile, I like the cartoon image of "Mort" looking about 20 years
old. Is this another of those multi-generational cartoon families like
the Brownes and Keanes?
But I'll take this chance to say that I like Mort Walker, and view him
as a sort of dean among the older cartoonist generation. When I was
about 12, he sent me an original strip, unrequested, in reply to a
simple fan letter. And he also enclosed a cool booklet for aspiring
young cartoonists -- something like, "So You Want To Be A Cartoonist".
And I believe he's been among the leaders of good projects like the
Cartoon Art Museum, which I used to enjoy visitng in Rye, NY (before
it moved to Florida).
So, admittedly I'm willing to cut him some slack.
>And I believe he's been among the leaders of good projects like the
>Cartoon Art Museum
And he has always put his efforts, money, and prestige to further the cause of
our litttle mania here.
He has also, over the years, helped fill the comics pages with such efforts as
Beetle Bailey, Hi and Lois, Mrs. Fitz Flats, Sam's Strip, Boner's Ark, The
Evermores, and probably had something to do with the mid-80s Betty Boop and
Felix.
>Is this another of those multi-generational cartoon families like
>the Brownes and Keanes?
Well, certainly. The above mentioned Betty Boop and Felix was credited to
writers Brian and Morgan, inker and letterer Greg, and penciller Neal.
They all shared the same father as well as the surname Walker. Whether all of
them remain apart of the Walker Studio, I don't know; but at least a couple
still contribute.
My understanding is that, although he does have a number of writers, gagmen and
artists helping him, still writes the final script and pencils the strip of
every Beetle Bailey.
What I'm finding amusing is that he isn't signing the strips that have been
showing the door to his Mort Walker Studio.
>> He doesn't even utilize the peripheral characters he's already got!
Just continuing a long tradition in comics of holding contests to name new
characters (among other things).

I thought about Plato, too. But I also thought it would be fun to
make the techie Zero. I'm not saying you could do it without a bit of
character finagling, but I'm grinning at the possibilities of his
being an idiot savant. "Can't smart guys like you see how to do this?

I hope I didn't imply otherwise. He's sort of my ideal of the (now)
old-timey cartoonist. Apart from all of his contibutions to the field, Mort
obviously loves comic strips, and I say, you gotta like somebody for that.
We sometimes see comments in this group, assailing the "dinosaurs" who
supposedly hog space that could be better used by hot, innovative new
talent. And, yes, there's something to be said for the view that the whole
comic page shouldn't be petrified for decades.
But (apart from the question of whether so much hotter, better talent really
is waiting), there's always a legitimate place on the page for the cartoon
style and generation that is best personified by Mort Walker. And I even
like the idea of the "name the character contest" as a conscious throwback
to days when comics were more interactive.
Thanks for the additional info about Mort's career (which I knew, but maybe
some other folks didn't).

Ironically enough though, Dot Com doesn't own a computer in her home.

Me too! I already sent in my first suggestion: 'Major Gay Guy".
The entry form also invites you to suggest a computer-related story
for the comic strip. I gave two:
Storyline 1:
A computer bug screws up Camp Swampy's database. All the gay soldiers
wind up getting triple the usual salary. But by the time the glitch is
corrected, it's too late to recoup anyone's money. Mysteriously, the
biggest party Camp Swampy's ever seen, occurs a few days later...and
it's "very gay". The straight guys and ladies are having just as much
fun as the gay ones. (The only one upset is Gen. Halftrack, 'cause
he's in need of the perfect excuse for why this all went down.)
Storyline 2:
A soldier is caught downloading pornography on one of Camp Swampy's
new computer terminals. Lietenant Fuzz discovers that the erotic
photos being downloaded are men (and the person who downloaded the
pictures is Killer). Fuzz is embarrassed and nervous, approaching
Killer on this delicate topic. Anyways, the situation is amicably
resolved, and some new gay characters appear in this comic strip for
the first time. They even double-date with their straight buddies.

Let's get a gay character, before we embellish upon those already
represented in the daily and Sunday comics, okay? We already got
liberated females, African-Americans, Asians, etc. Granted, there is a
lot more to do, with representing minorities fairly (as well as
humorously in a decent manner)...but to completely IGNORE gay people
in your deliberations? C'mon, folks, get over your straight selves!

Walker has also stated that one of the "Beetle Bailey" characters is
gay, but that he's not gonna say which one.
I thought Ms. B was a civilian employee? She's never in uniform. And
civilians ought not to be subject to that silly policy. (Have they ever
come up with a reason for the 'out/out' policy?)

All right, all right, point taken, but lest the few, the brave be forgotten,
gay folk *are* represented in the strips... While "Dykes to Watch Out For"
is ***shamefully*** under-distributed in my opinion - based solely on its
superior quality as a strip before we even start discussing the need for
representation - there's also "Jane's World", a nice little strip I read on
comics.com. I've been wondering how many papers carry it and if it's getting
wider distribution than "DTWOF" (possibly because it is *much* less overtly
political than "Dykes").
Anybody's local paper carrying this? Jym, your little corner of 'Merica is a
hotbed of seething ferment for the gay agenda, isn't it? ;) Is "Jane's
World" in your paper?

=v= As I've mentioned a few times now, after Lyman was booted
out of _Garfield_, he moved to the Castro neighborhood.
> Is "Jane's World" in your paper?
=v= Nope.
=v= The _San_Francisco_Chronicle_ is now published by the people
who use to publish the _San_Francisco_Examiner_, and it used to
be that the _Ex_ would run alternative newsweekly comics, with
_Life_in_Hell_ on Mondays, _Nina's_Adventures_ on Tuesdays,
_Joy_Ride_ on Wednesdays, _K_Chronicles_ on Thursdays, and I
forget who else (actually I probably have those days all wrong).
=v= They dropped that when they took over the _Chron_, and the
current publishers of the _Ex_ did not opt to continue them.
These are the only gay-friendly strips I've seen in the daily
papers around here, and their authors aren't gay (as far as I
know).
<_Jym_>
P.S.: Nina once did a strip about some hate mail she received
in which she was accused of being one of the "Dykes to Watch
Out For" and told to give up cartooning to spend more time
"fist-f**king other lesbians." She responded with, "Thanks
for writing!" while the Nina cartoon character proceeded to do
just that. This got her kicked out of a few newspapers, even
more than the strip with the sheep orgy.
Jym, how can you forget the excellent "Story Minute" by Carol Lay?
As an aside to those who know newspaper history: Can you believe
that California did not have the big one when the Hearst Corp. bought
the Chronicle. Michael and Charles de Young spinning and flailing
in their graves should have caused it.
