The Program Files Folder was accidentally deleted by an employee. We kept
getting a message at startup of not being able to find the file navap.vxd.
We've tried reinstalling the program, we've tried finding the file on her
c:drive and on other computers containing this program, but can not find
the file. How do I get just the navap.vxd file to place where the the
system.ini file is looking. I also tried to edit the system.ini file but
could find no reference to norton or symantec at all.

Thanks,

Terry Fahey

Terry,

Thanks for using our online technical support forum.

The Windows95 version of Norton Antivirus does not use the SYSTEM.INI
file. You will need to edit the Windows95 registry to eliminate this
message.

Visit the following URL with your web browser:

http://service.symantec.com/nav/kbase_nav.html

Once you are there, select the correct product from the drop-down menu
and then search for "19966118478". This will bring up a document
explaining the manual uninstall procedure for Norton Antivirus. Go
through all these steps, and then you should be able to reinstall
Norton Antivirus without error messages.

Let me know if this works or if I can be of further assistance.

Terry,

Thanks for writing.

This information is stored in the Windows 95 registry, not the SYSTEM
or WIN.INI. A reinstall to the default should take care of things. If
not you can manually remove the registry entries.

The following steps show you how to back up and edit the Registry.

1. Select the Start menu from Win95, then select Run.
2. Enter regedit. This opens the Registry Editor.
3. Select Registry, Export Registry File from the drop-down menu to
begin the backup process. The Export Registry dialog box allows you to
enter a filename and, by default, saves it to your desktop folder. The
saved file has an REG extension.
4. Select Save. You now have a backup of your registry.

NOTE: The Registry can be navigated either with the mouse (by
clicking the plus and minus boxes) or with the arrow keys (up/down to
move up and down, left/right to collapse/expand a branch).
5. Expand the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD.
· If NAV is the only Symantec program on your system, delete both the
NAVAP and SYMEVNT folders (right-click the folder icon, select
Delete).
· If you have other Symantec products, delete only the NAVAP folder.
6. Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE folder.
· If NAV is the only Norton 95 product on the system, delete the
SYMANTEC folder. Otherwise, delete only the SYMANTEC\NORTON ANTIVIRUS
folder.
7. Expand the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION folder.
8. Highlight the Run folder. Norton Auto-Protect is on the right side
of the Registry Editor. Delete it (right-click Norton Auto-Protect,
select Delete).

NAV95 is now removed from the Registry and its operation disabled.

There are other entries in the Registry related to NAV95, however,
they are benign and it is not necessary to delete them.

The following steps show you how to clean the Registry of other traces
of NAV95, if necessary.

1. Select Edit from the pull-down menu, then select Find.
2. Search for Symantec, Norton, and NAV.
· If NAV95 is the only Norton 95 product on the system, all entries
can be deleted.
· If there are other Norton 95 products on the system, be careful to
delete only those items related to NAV95.

Remove NAV from the Hard Drive

1. Open Windows Explorer (Start menu, Programs, Windows Explorer).
2. Locate the PROGRAM FILES folder and expand it. There are two
important sub-folders within PROGRAM FILES: SYMANTEC and NORTON
ANTIVIRUS.
3. Delete the NORTON ANTIVIRUS folder (right-click the folder icon,
select delete).
· If NAV95 is the only Norton 95 product on your system, you can also
delete the SYMANTEC folder.

Remove NAV from the Start Menu

1. Right-click the Start menu, then select Open.
2. Double-click the PROGRAMS folder.
3. Right-click the NAV95 folder, then select Delete.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
