Kent Hrbek & Wrestling on WTCN(Channel 11)

It was obvoius to me yesterday with Hrbie's unorthodox tag
of Ron Gant that he must have spent as many hours watching Wrestling
on channel 11 in Minneapolis as I did when growing up.
But seriously, Gant's momentum probably would have taked him off the bag
anyway.

I found it really interesting that the Atlanta (AM 750 radio station)
announcers didn't make a big deal out of it when it happened. They just said
that Gant was out at first after leaving the bag. In the next inning they
mentioned it a little but they didn't immediately mention Hrbek's unique
tag strategy.

Actually, I agree that this was a serious mistake by the official. I
say this despite being a HUGE displaced Twins fan. You gotta give
Hrbie credit, though, it was a nice act.
Actually, Hrbie wasn't the only wrestling fan in the building! Was I
the only one who caught Mr. Buck calling the Twins shortstop *Vern* Gagne?!

No way. This was B acting all the way. Ron Reagan was a better actor. It's
a good thing this guy is an ump an not an movie critic.

I read in the local paper this morning that the World Champion Wrestling
Federation (or something like that) has offered Kent Hrbek a contract.
The WCW is owned by Ted Turner, which may have had something to do with
the offer. The article also said that the offer of the contract was
conditional on Hrbie changing his last name, which the WCW person said
'looked like a typo.' A previous poster referred to Hrbek as the
'Bohemian Behemoth'; I do hope that comment is in the public domain,
as I have been making massive use of it at work here in Duluth MN (not
Duluth, GA).
I also heard that Jane Fonda has promised that she will stop doing the
chop. The guilt must be overpowering :-).

I disagree, but even if you're right the correct call is to call Gant
safe. If Hrbek doesn't allow Gant to come off the bag but rather takes
things into his own hands, you *have* to give Gant the benefit
of the doubt. Think of a rundown play: "Oh, if I hadn't obstructed the
runner he'd have been out anyway." It doesn't wash.
This was one the 10 worst judgement calls I've seen in a major league game.
Why did CBS bother to interview Rich Garcia if he's going to be a complete
gutless skunk? He explained the basis of judgement fine, but when asked
his opinion of the call he just dissembled.

this is a common tactic. Odd, but I haven't ever seen it
done before. I agree with Buck and Tim - the ump missed the
call.

Almost. While it sure looked like Jane-baby was choppin', I noticed, that as
she brought her arm down, she was turning the palm, then clapping, all in
proper rhythm. I think that this is called trying to have it both ways, and
if anything is even more hypocritical.
