Did anyone else catch Sean McDonough's (sp?) comments about Bob Costas the
other day? He said stuff like Costas couldn't fit over at CBS and something
like Costas is being arrogant for thinking he could switch networks for
baseball if NBC didn't get it back.

This is stupid and arrogant on Sean's part. When it comes to play-by-play, he
can't hold Bob's jock. Bob is ten times better than Sean as an announcer -
more smooth, more knowledgeable, better voice, and so on. In fact, I was
hoping NBC would make Bob and Kubek the number one team - they were great fun
to hear do a game. Sean is just another face in the crowd of loser announcers
at CBS sports. After Summerall and Madden, the rest fall off in quality
dramatically.

I sense some bias against McDonough. In his defense, he is a versatile,
jack of all trades play-by-play man in the broadcast booth. I've heard
him do college hockey and Red Sox games for WSBK. Calling McDonough a
"loser" isn't exactly backing up a claim he's no good. If he made some
careless remarks, that doesn't make him a poor announcer. What are some
examples of McDonough's not being worthy of his profession? Certainly
if he didn't know what he was doing he wouldn't have an upcoming broad-
cast career these past few years. I think you have to get accustomed to
his style. Everyone's different. I didn't like him when he started do-
ing Red Sox games a few years ago, but I've grown to like him.

I have to concur with the original poster regarding his Will McDonough/Bob
Costas remarks. McDonough is a nobody compared to Costas. The best baseball
broadcasting combo you could possibly put together is Costas and Tony Kubek.
I like Kaat (although I get enough of him with the local Twins broadcasts)
and I like Sculley, and I like Garagiola's sense of baseball history and
occasional funny stories. But whatever network baseball ends up on, I hope
Costas and Kubek are doing the games, especially if we have to put up with
the atrocity of another round of playoffs.
