I went to FAQ 106 at <www.entourage.mvps.org/faq/faqs.html#Anchor-64> but
could not find out how to view animated GIFs in messages I receive, only how
to send them.

The following is all the FAQ states:

106) Does Entourage support animated GIFs?

Animation is supported in complex HTML.

If you need to send an animated GIF to someone, just compress it first.
Otherwise, Entourage just inserts the first frame of the GIF.

You can also make a QuickTime file from the animation. The file size is
obviously larger than a plain GIF but it's is a good way to make them more
transportable.

Basically, it's like this. If the sender is sending a really fancy email
that includes tables or other things Entourage can't do, or includes
internally URLs of web page that needs to be viewed, it will force Internet
Explorer engine to render the message. So if it has an animated GIF as well,
it will be viewable as such. But if it is otherwise just a regular HTML
message with text formatting and some graphics, Entourage will render it
itself, and the GIF will not animate - you'll see just the first frame.

One of the consequences of entourage being able to handle more varieties of
graphics, including _inserted graphics_ since X SR-1 is that fewer HTML
messages get passed to IE to fewer will show animated GIFs.

The short answer - there's no way to view them in most messages, and nothing
you can do about if they don't. You can console yourself with the fact that
animated GIFs are mostly junk and you're not missing much.

Hi Norman,

See Paul B's response for the answer to your question. I just wanted to add
that we'll revise the FAQ as soon as we can get to it (there's a big backlog
at the moment). Thanks for pointing this out.

Thanks, Paul, for the clear, cogent explanation. It was one of those
puzzlers that tug at the mind, but you're right: animated .gifs are
something one can live without. (I get a newsletter from one organization
in which the editor inserts one each week that shows but one frame but it's
noting essential, just graphic frosting to go with the text.) You might
wish to add your fine explanation to FAQ 106.
