Amazed and shocked by this program. I've been scouring the net for more
info with little success but it seems she is still there.

What was really going on with that handyman though?

Good series up to now.

A Google search for
Janique Nicaragua
came up with
http://www.dakal.demon.co.uk
as the first hit
which appears to be a slightly out of date homepage.

Not that hard now, was it?

Try scouring harder next time!

I'm quite aware of that smartarse but I was searching for information on
their current status, so there! ;-)

I would say the most appropriate link I found was:-

http://makeashorterlink.com/?Y2ED22D4

Which tells of the man who sold them the island and his stand on ownership.

Good luck with your quest for good manners. ;-P

Sure did, must admit to being shocked at this myself, but the worst thing
the stupid cow still took the kids back to the island when the last I heard
them say was they all wanted to go anywhere else, what a selfish bitch. Go

I saw the program last night, mainly because I met Phil briefly at a
friends house the other year when he was in the process of buying the
island and was enthusiastic about the whole project (including getting
a TV company interested).

Next I heard was last week I heard there was a Mail story about the
program this week, it had all gone pear shaped and he had died of an
asthma attack.

At the time I met him he mentioned registering a domain and sorting
the website- something along the lines of 'diving-nicuagua' or some
variation - I was going to look but never got around to it.

Dunno if that might help.

The TV program is "No going back". It was yesterday (wednesday) on Channel
4.
Amazing story of an English family (a couple + 3 children) who bought an
small "paradise" island in Nicaragua.
and how their dream quickly turned to hell.

Thanks for the info. I found some mention of the Mail story on northern
lights but as you have to pay them to see their archives (I'm too miserly!)
I haven't read that one. I've never noticed how poor the Daily Mails web
presence was until now.

I don't know when the filming occurred but it seems to have been fairly
recent?

The website seems to be the one that Ben pointed out in his message, maybe
they just never got around to registering their own domain as I'm sure they
had much more pressing matters to attend to.

Thanks again.

And the moral of the story is that it really is very dangerous to play with

I think in the prog it said September - they'd been on the island 7
months - which would make it March when they arrived.

I don't remember when I met Phil but I thought it was only the
begining of 2001 ... though could have been late the previous year. In
any case, it looks like it was filmed last year. My friend said he
died around Christmas time - but he had only heard about it all from
the Mail.

Looks like it as none of the variations exist. Someone was suppossed
to be sorting this out around the time I met him - so the info
probably would be out of date because, as we saw from the programme
they never got as far as a diving school.

A sad sad programme that kind gentle man dying after all he had been
through - then the mad woman going back there , why didn't she show more
decorum round the locals by wearing clothes?.How infuriating it must have
been for him (though he did make light of it) for her to spend hours putting
on make up when there was work to do.
She still looked like a bulldog licking piss off a nettle after all that!!

Still it was a shame they didn't research the place better instead of
packing a few suitcases and leaving when it was obvious she probably had
never been camping - what was the fluffy white number she was wearing??

sad

How sad that he couldn't stand up to her for his sake and the kids.
Seemed a bit odd to me. Were they his kids? did he seem gay? did he
know she was shag*ing the big black guy?
I guess we will never know.
Superb series what will happen next week? :o

No, they weren't his kids (I think it said so in the program).

Don't think it was that he was gay - rather their relationship was
rather ... er .... open so it isn't improbable he knew.

I've also been looking round for some follow-up news about this family
coz it was a most distressing programme and I'm really surprised it
didn't get more coverage. Anyway, I came across:
http://www.diveguide.com/wwwboard/messages/276.html

It's a forum thread which includes a post from the original researcher
for the series, before it was made, asking for people to participate.
The thread continues with a lot of criticism about the concept and
also includes a post, which I can't verify although it does include an
email addy, which says that the eldest lad, Mark, is very ill and has
lost a leg in a boating accident. The rest of them have finally moved
away from the island. It really was damned tragic.

Last week's programme, about the family who moved to Brittany to set
up a fishing/campsite was a relief. Thoroughly decent folks and it
looks like they're making a go of it so best of luck to them.

According to Peter Tsokos, the businessman who originally sold the
Gaskin family the island (see www.tropical-islands.com), Jayne Gaskin
and her children are still living on the Island. The kidnap attempt
described in the C4 programme was apparently masterminded by the head
of a local nature conservation group (talk about affirmitive
action..).

I suspect there was a lot more going on behind the scenes than was
depicted in the programme. If Mrs Gaskin wasn't 'involved' with the
ex-Sandista guerilla then its no wonder he went a bit wacko.

DM

PS Thank Christ the following programme in this series was a bit more
heartening - I was quite depressed after watching this programme,
despite the mild titillation of seeing Mrs Gaskin's floatation aids.
