TOW the Joke

Slightly better than last week, though somewhat farcical in places.

Back to the usual 3 storylines this week.

Firstly, the Joke.

Ross gets a joke published in Playboy, but Chandler claims he invented
it. This leads to considerable argument, dragging the others in too.

Chandler continues to brood over this joke to Monica, but she has her
own obsession to deal with.

Finally, they ask Monica to arbitrate over whose joke it is, and they
each explain how they invented it, trying to coerce her into picking
them - Chandler even (light-heartedly) saying 'I'm your only chance of
having a baby'.

They don't like what Monica tells them though - that the joke sucks &
is
offensive. They then both DENY inventing it!

Second story - Joey's money problems.

Chandler wants to watch a cable show on Joey's TV, but he hasn't been
able to pay his bills, and both that and is phone have been cut off.
Joey is too proud to take a loan from Chandler though.

Later, Gunther offers Joey a job in Central Perk, which he is reluctant
to take, and then tries to conceal from the gang.

On his second day, he gets an audition, but cannot attend it, since
Gunther won't cover for him. Joey is determined to go though, and
closes CP for the duration.

This gets him fired, AND he also fails the audition, but Rachel
(unwitting) uses Gunther's crush on her to get Joey his job back.

The final storyline was the girl's weird dating question.

The girls are reading Ross's Playboy and Monica asks Rachel & Phoebe if
they HAD to pick one of the others to date, which would it be?

Rachel wisely refuses to answer, but Phoebe says it would be Rachel,
causing Monica to obsess about why!

Later on, in bed, C&M are brooding about their respective problems,
completely unaware of the others obsessions.

The next day, Monica challenges Phoebe as to why she'd prefer Rachel to
her. She reluctantly admits that she thinks Monica would be 'high
maintenance', and that Rachel is more easy-going. This gets twisted
into Rachel thinking that Phoebe means she is a pushover, so she storms
out.

When they come back, they accuse Phoebe of being flaky, which, to their
surprise, she readily admits.

Later on, in CP, Monica gets Chandler to try and persuade them she is
not high-maintenance, but his speech has clearly been written by
Monica, and Rachel calls his bluff. He then upsets Monica by telling
her she IS a little high-maintenance, but quickly makes up for it for
telling her that is one of the things he loves about her.

In the epilogue, the guys are asked the 'who would you date' question,
which R&J avoid, but C says Joey, presumably opening up a new can of
worms!

Comments :

ISTM that the Geller obsessive trait is being overplayed in recent
episodes.

Unlike most of the previous seasons, there seems no underlying theme to
the show, leaving it somewhat adrift and short on strong stories.

And Paul finally hits on the whole theme of S6! :)

The next three episodes are great, IMHO - if nothing else, watch the
next two episodes to see how a celebrity guest spot *should* be done.

IYDMMSS Paul, are you ever going to actually ENJOY an episode? I was
laughing all the way through this, especially at the three women.

This should put to rest all those who say Chandler would freak at a baby.

This isn't true: although they start off talking about their own problems,
they then include each other as well.

> ISTM that the Geller obsessive trait is being overplayed in recent

You are entitled to seem to you what you please Paul, but ISTM that Ross was
no worse than Chandler, and Monica no worse than Rachel.

> Unlike most of the previous seasons, there seems no underlying theme to

But there was! Split into groups of 1/2/3, Joey had a problem, Chandler &
Ross had a problem, and the women had a problem. They were all stuck until
each was helped out by someone from one of the other groups.

**********************************

It was interesting that Rachel complained about being a pushover, when
actually she always gets her own way - except with Phoebe who dominates
everybody. This suggests a pecking order as follows...

Phoebe
Rachel
Monica
Chandler
Joey
Ross

..except that Ross is the only one who can tell Phoebe what to do
sometimes, so maybe the names should be in a circle...

He was sweet, but Chandler has done this sort of thing before - confronted
Monica's objections & turned them around at her, rather than denying her.

Oh yes - at least the *real* Joey does, not "Slow Joey": you only have to
look at the way Ross either goes running to Joey for advice; or he regrets
failing to do so after he's come badly unstuck, eg the start of 316.

yes and that he still can do it shows that their moving in together hasnt badly
affected their relationship.

ahh I see what your saying..
Joey might not be book smart but sometimes he does have some common sense.
Ross is all book smart.

Joey has a lot of maturing to do in that catagory. Like many women have
said to him. He's not marriage material. Its going to take awhile for him to
become
marriage material so the writers better start maturing that aspect of his
character now or he wont be married till he's 70..

I think it's more complicated than that. Ross falls over at anything
Rachel says. He will stand up, at times, to each of the others
depending on the situation. I do not think either of the men really
dominate him consistently. He tends to lose his fights with Phoebe, and
he does give into Monica *when she's in anal-freak mode.*

The men actually give and take pretty well. I can think of a couple of
times that Chandler, who supposedly dominates Joey, had to grovel in
apology. Monica dominates Chandler, and sometimes Rachel. Rachel and
Monica tend to trade off.

Only when the script calls for it. He can be pretty senseless at
times. HAND TWIN?????

This may appear to be posted from me..but its Claire's!

I will give you this. Ross has the common sense God gave a chipmunk,
and that's a fact.

I think Playboy had an article on that very theme two or three years
ago. Some guy wittered on for several thousand words about the pros and
cons of the three, and settled on Monica, IIRC.

The issue is probably lying around somewhere if anyone wants to hear the
guy's reasoning.

Does anyone have any idea what the Doctor Monkey joke was? BTW, I am *not*
referring to any jokes printed in the edition of Playboy seen in the show.

I've enjoyed 6 out of the 12 episodes so far this season.

My scores for S1-5 were 14/18/15/14/13 so S6 isn't doing *too* badly.

As long as Janine doesn't return, that is! (No spoilers)

IYAM, 612 shows that Chandler is now looking forward to fatherhood.

Ross only gets anywhere when the others have already backed themselves into
a corner and know in their own hearts that they're in the wrong. This
especially applies when Phoebe is in the wrong, and all the others are
right, so Rachel/Monica/Chandler/Joey make Ross confront her.

Actually Chandler nearly always loses arguments to Joey, but Chandler
behaves like Joey's parent, so I put them that way round.

Monica comes across as dominating Rachel, until you look at who nearly
always gets her own way by being a little princess. Rachel shared that
apartment for 5 years and got Monica to do all the housework. How long
did Chandler live there before he put an apron on?

I was somewhat puzzled last January when all the US fans started talking
about which Friend of the same sex they'd like to date. Everyone was so
good about not spoiling the episode that I never twigged. :)

The reason I said that is that the four Janine episodes brought the show
down, if these are ignored then my score for S6 so far becomes 6 out of 8.

The reason I said FOUR Janine episodes is that she was virtually written
out of 609, she just had a walk-on part lasting 43 seconds.

> How about Janice instead? :)

It would be nice to see Janice again: the last time we saw her, she dumped
Ross for being too whiney, (wotta gal); then told Joey that her score was
now two out of three - so there's a new story for you... :)

It *did* show that Chandler knows how to push Monica's buttons, but he did
so in a happy & relaxed manner, which showed that Chandler was not afraid of
the prospect himself. I hasten to add that Chandler was *so* off-guard, that
he showed no consideration for her feelings by implying that he was her last

My guess is sommat to do with a monkey, and the monkey being a doctor and

So sommat like a woman goes to a doctor, and finds out he's a monkkey and

Sounds like another v silly joke that someone (circa 1978 so I don't
remember who) turned into an operatic aria.... 2 parrots in a tree, and
the owner asks a passing man to climb up and retrieve them because they
won't come down. He climbs up and brings down the red parrot, but
leaves the other one up there. "Why didn't you bring down the green
parrot as well?" asks the owner. The man replies "Because it wasn't
ripe yet."

I can still remember the tune of the bloody song as well (it was on
Radio 4 but I was very very young and have no idea how to trace what it
was)

613 "TOW Rachel's Sister"

For any still doubting that Joey is not as dumb as he pretends to be, he
turns out to be a good waiter - prompt, courteous, gets the orders correct,
and has no trouble calculating the bill. He did have some experience at
Allesandro's, but Rachel was never that good after years at Central Park.

We are now half-way through Season 6, yet every clip in the opening titles
still comes from Season 5.

Phoebe had some lovely visual jokes with the contents of her bag, including
a live goldfish & a running shoe with an egg inside; then counting everyone
to check all six really were present when Jill knocked on the door.

Reese Witherspoon did a good job as Rachel's sister. She was 24 when this
episode was made, making Jill two years younger than Rachel was when she
began, and we saw the same type of shopping spree:

"I don't need a job, I don't need my parents, I've got great boots" boots
"Please hire me" sweater & "don't you want to rent me this apartment" pants

Jill also bought a pashmina, which caught out great know-it-all Ross (it's a
long shawl woven from the fine underfleece of goats from Northern India).

Gunther fans should note that he had a larger part in this episode than
Janine did in 609 "TOW Ross Got High".

The C&M story was pretty gross (though sex needn't involve the respiratory
tract) but it was saved by Monica's topless scene, and depending on how much
you are turned on by finding new places for vapour rub...

Phoebe fans looking for signs of new romance will have noticed that Joey
offered her a free scone as she was so pretty, (she does look *hot* in this
episode) - but Phoebe was jealous of Ross & Jill and sat between them.

Rachel was typically jealous, declaring to her sister that Ross was not a
geek, but handsome, smart, kind, and a good kisser. But when she rushed to
the window to spy on them, where had the big white porcelain dog gone? It
wasn't on Monica's balcony!

Finally, the UK version had no tag, was this true of the US version? And the
credits included Lex Arquette as a customer, yet another sibling of David?

Because the flirting made her feel awkward. Watching somebody else

think you are trying to see something that really, really, *really*

..and FOURTH of all, if seeing flirting made Phoebe feel awkward, why
didn't she just tell them to get a room? (cf 408 & 524) She's not the
repressive type who would intervene on moral grounds, is she?

FIRST of all, you are being sweet & kind to me, and I appreciate that. :)

SECOND of all, you & Larissa have a point that's hard for me to argue
against: this is where it would be really great if 613's scriptwriters
Sherry Bilsing, Ellen Plummer or Seth Kurland were contributing to our
little discussion; but we don't even have MNL any more. :-(

THIRD of all, since they are not, then we have no alternative but to
stick a pin in that line of argument, and jump up 21 lines to say...

Because Jill is Rachel's sister. Even though Pheobe urged Rachel to let Ross
get on with his life, doesn't mean she doesn't realize that him dating
Rachel's sister would make for an awkward situation. Dating the sister of
your ex-girlfriend is something that most people would consider taboo.
Pheobe's actions here are exactly like they should be. If any other member
of the group was there with Ross and Jill, I would hope they would do the
same thing and jealousy would play no part in it.

That's a valid interpretation, but I think it's going too far to refer to a
taboo. According to my mother, (who was one of several sisters), my father &
most of my uncles were brought home by one girl but ended up with another.

As the song goes (IIRC)...
"So tell me, pretty lady, are there any more at home like you?"

I'd have disagreed about the consent thing except that Jill was Rachel's
sister; so you're right Jay, he should have cleared it with her first.

Do you mean this...

ROSS: Did you tell your sister to ask me out?
RACHEL: Well yeah-
ROSS: Oh wow! I mean, wow! I mean, I-I-I think she's cute but
I-I would never have thought of going out with her, never!
RACHEL: Really?!
ROSS: Yeah but after you said it was okay, I figured, "Why not?!"
RACHEL: Oh so-so not really never.
ROSS: I have to say you are a much bigger person than I am. I mean
after all we've been through, I just-y'know I wish I had a
brother to reciprocate. Hey, if you ever want to go out with
Monica, you have my blessing.

..that's the nearest I can see to any clearance with Rachel, but in fact
Ross never explicitly asks her permission, he's not even listening to
her, he just makes assumptions about her feelings.

And Rachel doesn't throw any orders at Ross for him to obey.

BTW, while checking this out, I noticed that there was a cute R&P moment
(just before Gunther tells Joey he owes $8) with Ross & Phoebe sitting up
one end of the sofa - she is listening intently as he explains something
about his hand, possibly being sceptical about palmistry.

I'm not saying it means anything Claire - just that it was cute ! :)

I think Ross dating Jill is extremely wierd, strange, awkward and a general
dating "taboo." It's something I would never do in a million years and I think
Ross should have politely turned down Jill's invitation. But this is sitcom
world so that doesn't happen, which is fine. It's clear from this R&R exchange
that Ross was going to turn down Jill's advance until he was told that Rachel
had proposed the idea(I'm assuming Jill stretched the truth a little about
Rachel's encouragement of the idea). So Ross goes ahead with the date because
he believes he's got Rachel's OK. Ross didn't ask for permission because he
thinks he's already been given the go-ahead from Rachel.

I still don't think he should have accepted the date, but obviously he didn't
feel he had reason not to.

Which would have meant little IMO, as Rachel could hardly have refused
without looking possessive, and Ross would probably ignored a refusal
anyway.

Well, he asks if he has her permission, and since she knows he has bad
information from Jill and she doesn't correct it, then the onus is
indeed on her to correct the situation.

I look at the whole package that is "Joey". He may on some level have more
smarts than some of the others, but I'm not particularly impressed by it,
nor am I interested in crediting him with being smart. This is the guy
who "needs to know that I'm going out with more people than she is". I
know that is season one, but I do not see any reason to think he has
changed. This is the jerk who made his roommate sit in a box for
accidentally falling in love with Kathy while he (Joey) was cheating on
her.

My own position on this is that it is entirely up to Ross what he should
do. He might decide that it is not a good idea to date Jill (and it turned
out not to be a good idea), based on his instinct about Jill and Rachel
and their relationship together, but if the situation is different, I see
absolutely nothing wrong with it. I would not expect Ross to avoid this
as any kind of general principle.

If it is wierd for the ex-, tough. S/he can just get over it.

oooh ooooh ooooh.

I was wondering if I was the only one bothered by this. Expect totally honosty
from your roommate, but not act likewise towards your girlfriend???? That was
TOTALLY preposterous, especially since Joey was so concerned with *when* Chandler
kissed Kathy. To Joey, it was absolutely *critical* as to whether it was "before"
or "after" Chandler informed him about it, a matter of about 12 hours. Like his
feelings were going to change that drastically that fast. Besides, of all people,
Joey should know that Chandler had a harder time with girls than he does. I
thought it was totally selfish and uncaring on Joey's part.

614 "TOW Chandler Can't Cry"

Rachel started watching at the window as Chandler 'helped' Monica with her
vapour rub in the bathroom. 2½ hours later, Rachel is still at the window
when C&M emerge from the bedroom, and Monica is obviously much better.
That's some damn fine vapour rub they have in America!

Chandler says that he made out with Joey's sister "like 5 years ago", but in
fact it was only three years before.

For once Rachel is open with Ross about her feelings, (too weird him being
with Jill), and Ross immediately does what she asks.

The writers always have great fun when they have a chance to make up porno
titles, and this was no exception - Sex Toy Story 2, Lawrence of a Labia,
Inspect Her Gadget, and best of all, Buffay The Vampire Layer !!!

Ursula was amazing in the movie, and did you notice that the vampire's name
was Nosforatool? But why did Joey hire all those videos if he couldn't bear
to watch them? And how do Rachel & Monica know what her ankle looks like?
Anyway, Phoebe's reaction was priceless: "Oh my God! What am I doing?!!"

Chandler is reading "Chicken Soup for the Soul" (what's that then?) when all
of a sudden, Old Monica walks into the room !!! All lovely and warm-voiced,
just like she was for five seasons! And then when Chandler doesn't respond
to her hypothetical situations, New Monica jumps up & screeches! Aarghh!!

She was being very hard on Chandler, for he said right at the start that he
would cry if his mother killed herself: but then peculiarly, New Monica went
away again, and we had lovely Old Monica for the rest of the episode!

Ross is still having trouble with his neighbours, (or at least their kids).

Once again, Phoebe only goes as far as Ursula's doorway, when is she ever
going to go inside? Though I can see why not on this occasion! But anyway,
how come Ursula is a porn star, when "Mad About You" finished with Ursula
becoming a successful politician?

Apart from Chandler, all the R&R fans must have weeping buckets as Ross
finally admitted his feelings to Rachel; but then was not the whole scene
yet another example of the S6 writers having a go at earlier seasons, as
exemplified by Chandler's OTT reaction? He wants to know why the pair can't
work things out - the answer is that the February Sweeps are over...

It made a change to see Ross be accused of being gay, instead of Chandler.
But then Chandler got lumbered with another masturbation joke, even if it
was funny, when he is the only of the three with a steady girlfriend.

The whole episode was much funnier than 613, so much so that if both parts
are taken together, then it was an hour-long episode that took a while to
warm up while it established its plot.

BIG question - how long does Old Monica last for? Has New Monica gone away
now? Please-please-please!!!! (No spoilers)

Not necessarily. Neither one of them said which sister they were referring
to. It could refer to a different sister than the one in TOW Chandler
Can't Remember Which Sister (BTW, wasn't that a season 4 episode?)

Just to clarify, the "for once" applies only to Rachel being open with Ross,
and not to Ross doing what she asked. Right?

It's the only kind of fun the writers know how to have.

OK, I think I got this one: "hire" = "rent", right?

By the time Mabel is as old as she is in "The Finale Frontier", being a
porn star will actually be considered to be a positive qualification for
being a politician.

So when Monica's shrieking her head off, and demanding that Rach and Pheebs'
state that they'd go out with her, you think she's the same as when she let
all the others know she was breaking up with Alan? The former's New
Monica - the latter's Old... Think about it.

Yes, you're quite right Activia - but when Ross divorces Marie Angela in
Season 8 or something we'll have people saying "Yes, but in episode 614
Chandler said that he slept with her in February 1995".

Doesn't sound much like Chandler reading material to me.

Don't you think it would have been so much better if Monica was being
genuine, simply voicing her own fears rather than trying to trap him;
and then after she leaves, Chandler quietly cries when he's alone?

I reckon Chandler was faking his tears the whole time. He's cried before
when it was personal, he just wasn't crying for third party situations.

Aaah, but everybody loves Chandler, so that's alright then...

Didn't he just rent "Buffay, the Vampire Layer"? Gunther and that other
guy mentioned the other titles.

I thought she was at first! It surprised me as much as Chandler when she

When has he cried for personal grief? Besides the one when the duck goes
to the vet, but that was just ONE tear.

613 "TOW Rachel's Sister"

Alyssa Phoebes has emailed me, reporting that Phoebe just disappears halfway
through this episode, which surprised me. These dots symbolise the 260 lines
of dialogue, with asterisks for Phoebe's lines:

Alyssa is quite right - I guess I was too distracted by the event marked with
that exclamation to notice!

I didn't say grief, just when it was personal. Check out 414 "TOW Joey's
Dirty Day", 422 "TOW the Worst Best Man Ever", & 520 "TOW the Ride Along".

I've since come across this thoughtful piece from February 12th...

Says who? "Stupid is as stupid does." -- Forest Gump.

Either way, it's still not a continuity glitch. It is not impossible for
Chandler to have forgotten about the first screw-up when he dated the
"2nd" sister, and it is certainly not beyond Joey to have forgotten
about it at the time, besides which I don't see why Joey has to refer to
the first one, his reaction at the time was harsh enough as it was - yet
another example of Joey being an absolute jerk in my opinion.

ACK! Since I havent read it, I'll give you a snyopsis.
It's about lessons in life or something like that, there are a lot of
stories in it, most are sad.

I have a natural penchant to analyse everything, but I do my best to
keep it under control, except when people pay me large sums of money.

Feh. You call *this* analysis? A three minute type-out of bits & bobs
with no coherent narrative, unlike Paul's much better pieces?

Sorry, but "innit" was not a typo but a British colloquial expression.
