(recorded messages/voicemail): 615.366.7809
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greetings! This is the official announcement and invitation for PHREAKNIC,
a convention for hackers, phone phreaks, cypherpunks, programmers, civil
libertarians, ham/scanner enthusiasts and culture jammers. Not one of the
above? No prob. Network engineers, ISP owners, sysops, security consultants,
the generally curious and (especially) those who want to learn about some
of the more "underground" elements of our technological culture
are all encouraged to attend. We even expect a fed or two.

The con starts Friday afternoon and runs nonstop until noon Sunday; there
may be a few additional events afterwards, so check the contact sites above
on a regular basis. There will be live djs, films and videos, a series of
lectures and panel discussions from noon to 6:00pm Saturday, and numerous
informal tech talks and demos.

A computer network will be set up early Friday for weekend-long session of
r00t wars. The goal will be to hack into as many LOCAL machines as possible
and take them over, while preventing the same from happening to you.
Participants will learn a LOT about internet and network security. Bring
your own ethernet/RJ45 equipped computer(s); the network will be TCP/IP.
There will be one 'public' machine with a 33.6k connection to the internet
(sorry, no cablemodem link this year). More details at the websites.

Why are we doing this?

A very wise man once said 'Don't get mad at the media, BECOME the media!'

We see this as a chance to dispel many of the misconceptions and outright
lies spread by certain greedy corporations (especially those in the
telecommunications industry) about our subculture, expose the bad laws
their lobbyists sponsor and our politicians pass (usually over the protests
of experts), and chastise the mainstream media for frequently poor and
biased reporting (and for perverting the term "hacker", which was a
complement up until the 80's). Assuming anyone wants to listen, that is...

It's also an excuse for a big party Halloween weekend. See ya there!

THE LONG & SOMEWHAT DETAILED:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I: r00t WarZ rules (or lack thereof)
II: Saturday discussion & panel schedule
III: What to bring
IV: T-shirt info
V: Room registration info
VI: More directions than you can shake a stick at
VII: Contact info
VIII: Sponsors and special info

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Section I: r00t WarZ rules (or lack thereof)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

---> Do not physically damage any systems.
---> Limit hacking to conference systems; do not hack outside systems.
If you hack outside systems, do not tell me about it.
---> Do not disconnect network cables on the LAN.
---> Do not crash the LAN, if you can help it.
---> Do not wipe another system's drives unless the owner sez it's OK.
If you do not want your drives wiped, put a "DO NOT WIPE" sign
on your computer.
---> At the end of the con, or when you or your victim(s) decide to no
longer participate in r00t WarZ, please explain what you did &
how you did it.

DISCLAIMERS: Move your valuable data off your computer BEFORE participating
in r00t WarZ. Plan on wiping your drives & reinstalling your OS when
you get home. You participate at your own risk, and may not hold
anyone (including con organizers and/or participants) liable for any
dataloss. Do not participate if you do not agree with or understand
the above statements.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Section II: Saturday discussion & panel schedule
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* 12:00pm - 12:50pm
"Global Security Implications of Electromagnetic Weapons Proliferation"
Talk by Nailbomb, with handouts and audience Q&A
HERF guns, EMP bombs and other fun ways to really mess up the
infrastructure of industrialized, high-tech, information based
economies.

* 01:00pm - 01:50pm
"Reputation Capital: Digital Currency for the 21st Century and Beyond"
Talk by Jeremy Mineweaser, with audience Q&A/discussion
The success of large-scale digital communications networks
ultimately depends on security among untrusted parties.
Widely-deployed reputation systems will revolutionize the way
information is exchanged over digital communications networks.

* 02:00pm - 02:50pm
"(Ab)using the Electromagnetic Spectrum for Fun and Profit"
Talk by Badger and jonnyx, with handouts, demos and audience Q&A
Privatizing once-public airwaves, bad laws, privacy issues,
health concerns, pirate stations, why the First Amendment does
not apply to broadcast media, and possible future trends.

* 03:00pm - 03:50pm
"Is (C)opyright Wrong?"
Panel discussion with Decius, CyberVox, and ???
Fair use, parody, satire, the death of the oral tradition, bootlegs,
protecting the artist and creators, warez & mp3s, etc.
Who owns ideas and images? Are today's laws reasonable,?

* 04:00pm - 04:50
"Traffic Analysis and Anonymnity"
Talk by Decius
Traffic analysis and it's relevance to intelligence gathering,
including existing systems and software, plus experiments to try
at home. The talk will conclude with the presentation of a new
system for distributed data havens, developed by Decius and
Jeremy Mineweaser. Paper forthcoming, hopefully there will be a
basic handout with pointers for more info.

* 05:00pm - 05:50pm
"Mass Media Conglomerates, Blindspots and Possible Alternatives"
Panel discussion with the Rev. Keith A. Gordon, Decius, Joel
Moses, and ???; moderated by jonnyx.
Reagan-era FCC deregulation paved the way for huge media conglomerates,
and increasingly fewer points of view as corporations bought most
mass-media outlets. Is the information we receive today of lesser
quality than it was twenty years ago? Why is there less news and
more commercial/profit oriented "infotainment"? Where should one
go for reliable sources of news not covered by mainstream media?
What types of stories can mainstream media NOT cover, or at least
not cover well?

Section IV: T-shirt info
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Check out the cool t-shirt design by Dagmar the Surreal at:
http://www.2600.nashville.tn.us
XL white 50/50 double sided T's, shouldn't run more than ~$8-$10.

UPDATE!!!
The place we were using to print t-shirts burnt to the ground several days
ago (exciting pictures soon). We were unable to find a new printer in time.
Unfortunately, the best we can do is take names and snailmail/email addresses
& send the shirts out via mail in a few weeks. Sorry.
(They STILL shouldn't run more than $10/shirt; we may be able to get them in
a variety of colors & sizes as well.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Section V: Room registration info
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you call to reserve a room for the con, keep the following in mind:

---> The con is officially known as the 'Public Network Security Conference'.
---> The con room rate is $60/night for a double, but you are allowed to
cram as many people in a room as you want.
---> The people at the 1-800# seem to be unable to keep any records
concerning the Public Network Security Conference; call the 615# to
reserve a room.
---> If the 615 people say they can't find anything about a 'Public Network
Security Conference', tell them to look again, or ask to speak with
someone else. We have half a dozen rooms reserved already.
