I'm posting to see if there is anyone who knows of a Koga Ryu Ninjutsu Sensei in Singapore, Malaysia or Australia. Please e-mail me if you know of anyone (better yet if you're a Koga Ryu practitioner yourself).

Dear Stanley, Ther is no such thing as KOGA RYU NINJUTSU. Yes some guy
during the Ninja craze came up with his own style he calle Koga Ryu.
Please don't be bamboozalled by these charlatans. There are many good
teachers of Bujinkan Dojo Ninpo out there. Or you can learn some
Aikijutsu or Kosho Shorei Kempo. All of these have the same exact roots
and really look similar and are geared for the same thing. Remember the
best self defense is when noone gets hurt. Mark

With more than 7000 ryu having been catalogued in Japan, and Koga being
one of the two more famous areas where Ninja were born and trained, I'd
sure hesitate to make a comment as above. Perhaps you may be referring to
the unlikelihood of a person finding a legitimate instructor from the Koga
region, but no such thing as Koga Ryu?

There are people who claim otherwise, but I believe the scrolls for
the art are in a museum in Japan, and not available for people to
touch, let alone study (not that many people would no what to do with
them if they could get them).

You are correct. Koga ryu was in existance until it's soke was killed in a
plane crash without having named a successor. As such, the ryu died at
that instant. The scrolls are said to be in a museum for viewing. In a living
ryu, the scrolls are in the possession of the soke to prove his legal right to
head the ryu.

If anyone claims to teach Koga ryu, they are teaching some of the
remnants of the style. Without someone to head the system, there
is no guarantee to the quality of the material (IMHO).

Mr Holmes,
What he is referring to is indeed the absence of any legitimate
instructors in Koga ryu ninpo/. The last soke of a direct
lineage koga ryu died with his deshi in an accident in the late
60s, and it was published in the US in one of the many short
lived martial arts mags of the period. However, the article
republished came from a Japanese newspaper account, translated,
of course, with pictures of hte scrolls of the ryu on display
at a museum. The poiont of that article was that the Japanese
paper editorial was a call for the japanese government to take
steps to protect against teh loss of more of the koryu. THere
was no interest at that time in the non sport arts in Japan,
and the article berated teh martial arts community and the
government for allowing the upsurge of modern "budo" and sport
competition to bring about the demise of traditional arts.
There are few Iga ryu remaining, too.
While thre may have been one or two unskilled students who
trained for a short time with this last soke, the point is that
30 years ago the last legit direct lineage koga ryu went
extinct, period. For anyone to claim lineage from any Koga ryu
is suspect at best. Unless and until someone can show
documented scrolls and menkyo, I consider them charlatans,
Ashida Kim and his ilk being among these. These guys take
people's money with false claims, and make the legitimate ryu
which have survived by exceptional effort by many highly
dedicated marti8al artists look bad.
Show me , or shut up. period. 'nuff said.
