I've just spent a remarkable 48 hours with our newsgroup queen of stoke and
aloha, the unequaled Dee Dee. Just being in her company, as many GP2K1ers will
attest, is like being bathed in the glow of an angel. The positive and
unwavering spirit of kindness and love is almost a religious experience.
Having the privilage...no....honor of spending quality 1 on 1 time, talking
about her life and how she came to the newsgroup (I am modestly taking credit
here, just ask her) has been a serious revelation for me. You might say D2
forced me to examine my own participation and caused me to look inward to
uncover and justify call the cynicism, anger, bitterness, suspicion and negative
attitude I have felt dealing with certain members of this ng.
Having lived in Hawaii since she was four, Dee Dee grew up and in the Hawaiian
culture that embodies the spirit of aloha. In that culture there is no room for
feelings like I had. Her philosophy of finding something to love in every one
imbues her with such a wondrous halo of sweetness and love, you cannot meet her
and not love her spirit. It is the most positive force I have ever encountered.
The night she serenaded us at the GP with songs of love, companionship,
brotherhood and friendship, she woke in me the realization that I am guilty of
being a catalyst for meanness, spite, anger, and disrespect. By writing lies
about my fellow group members from the PNW, I was ignoring their membership in
the human family and seeking to make myself feel superior by denigrating their
different way of communicating. They may be different but they are no less
worthy of respect, kindness, love and gratitude.
Thanks to Dee Dee's influence and kind and gentle guidance, I can now embrace
and love my brothers from the PNW. And despite the fact they may continue to
scorn me by saying I am an old, fat, lazy, washed up, burned out, bodyboarding
poser, I can still find something to love in the fact they are my human brothers
and newsgroup friends.
So, biting a bullet here, with all the love, respect, and sincerity I can muster
with the help of Dee Dee's graceful teachings, I wish nothing but good things
and great waves for our brothers and friends from the PNW. May your life be
full of righteous smoking barrels and your souls soar like sea birds flying on
the wings of love and aloha.
Dee Dee is just getting up now and has a long drive home today. We went to
dinner last night at my favorite local place and she had a little too much to
drink, but she said she wanted to post something to you before she split. I'm
going out to buy some Pikake aroma therapy oil and some Gabby Pahinui cds she
recommended.
I love youse all.
Lei Aloha, Lei Makamae.

Hi every one, it's Dee Dee on Foon's laptop......stoked to the max after the
fabulous and wonderful GP2K1. I'm so happy to be able to tell you what a
delightful & joyous experience the GP2K1 is.......YEAH!!!! This has been my
first vacation in several years and I want to tell you, da stokin guys of the
Tranquility Base have made it the happiest I can remember in years.
First, a big Dee Dee shout out aloha to my all my GP2K1 friends.....Rod,Ferg,
Andy, Neal, Edmund, Sarge, Todd, KC & Sveta, Lucy (Ferg's cute little surf
doggie) new daddy Myron, Foosball master...Steve, and of course the humble Foon
himself. What can I say about that man......the last two days with him, helping
him close up the TB house then driving up to the Bunker have been a true delight
and revelation.
Unfortunately he's not here right now.....he's off to the emergency clinic to
have his sinuses looked at after snorting some Pikaki aroma therapy oil from the
bottle....it's concentrated!! It's true....he's a walking catastrophe waiting to
happen!!! But we love him anyway!!! :))
I just want to thank every person at the GP2K1 for making my visit one of the
most wonderful & happy experiences of my life. The words, "thank you" alone
cannot express the huge gratitude I feel for the opportunity to be there & meet
and especially surf with you all. I love you all to the maximum of my stoked
hawaiian heart. Such wonderful people, I feel so blessed to be able to have
spent such a great time talking, and especially surfing & cooking with you all.
You are all great & mighty stoked surfers of AS in my mind!!!
Foon has been a true fount of information on this trip for me, especially the
last two days. He has patiently and gently opened my clouded eyes to what is
very wrong with this ng. Using Google archives he has shown me the cancer that
is growing in our midst, orchestrated by evil men posing in various false
profiles from the PNW. Evidence he has gathered, supplied by some who are much
smarter than him in computer matters, clearly show a malignant & meticulously
planned plot to dominate then destroy our beloved alt.surfing!!! How could we
let this happen!!!
At first I could not believe this. But the overwhelming proof, beyond a shadow
of a doubt, presented with some nice shooters of Sauza Commemerativo Anejo,
convinced me that these evil, scumsucking, bottomfeeding, cultists are Satan's
own cyberspawn, who have infiltrated our happy family like terrorists, and
spread their putrid virus, creating greenheaded, pus filled boils on the ass of
our AS surfing brotherhood!!!!!
These traitorous prickbastards are ruining our group before our very eyes. They
should be burned out and exposed for the evil, manipulating, profile-ific
monsters they are. I swear to God if I ever meet one of these clowns I will
crush his head like the peanut it is. The only pnw they'll know is one,
"PissedOff, Nasty, Wahini" from Ipswich MA!!!!
Well, having told you all that, I still would like to wish you all, except those
ignorant F***Wads from the pnw, the most stoked & happy day. Love youse all.

That's a matter of perspective...
Utah created AS and I run it. We were both here before you
and the Guida-loozers. I took a 5 year break out of contact
with all modern technology or I would of been here from the
beginning as well. Some day I'll tell you about the act of
treachery that allowed Utah to stay behind in comfort and
luxury to create AS while I labored in the woods with a heavy
backpack and a quiver of semi-guns and acres of dope...
So maybe just maybe you guys have dumbed down the NG
and ruined it for us?
Never the less, we graciously welcome you to our NG and
would never consider the alternative.

That oughta be a crime. That "DeeDee" portion of Foon's post
had more bitterness in it than DeeDee has expressed in years.

The last 3 places I've built are all 1000 sq ft or under and
I build with available timber on the land and the beach.
I'll yank large timbers from the beach and use those
for structural material.
Basically I can build you a basic, low cost place in a really
short period of time.
As long as it's close to the beach...

The rest of the local woods disintegrate within 5 years unless
you treat them and they are just about the same price. The
natives built with cedar for a reason. Fir will hold up a little
better than the rest but cedar is the one... Less maintenance.

We don't have cypress here, and no one in their right mind
would use pine (too much pitch to mess with - "mess" being the operative

Actually, there *IS* a difference - a BIG difference: rot resistance.
Old-growth Western Red Cedar (the local favorite fir siding/roofing) has
a high degree of rot resistance - much higher than any other species
native to the area.

Nope, I can't even picture it. A poof made from low-rot-resistant wood
just doesn't cut it.
I wimped out on my place: high-grade asphalt shingles on the roof,
concrete/fiber siding. Long life, low cost, low maintenance. Looks good,
less filling.
I use the froe for attacking the hardpan (1'-2' deep, 90' thick).

A "poof" ??? That's a typo, but a most apt one. A roof made from the
wrong materials would go "poof" soon.

I used metal on this one. I've done comp, cedar and torch down
and metal is the easiest. less manitenance and it actually looks
good from an airplane ;-)
Gotta have wood on the siding though. None of this plastic
or metal siding crap. I can't think of anything that would
destroy my day quicker than to step out onto my deck
with a cup of coffee and marvel at my plastic siding...
'ship-lap' is correct, at least correct as far as dealing with sawmills and
such. I prefer a fairly narrow board myself, easier to smack into place and
less prone to opening up as it shrinks. No wider than 1x8. What used to be
called 'match board'; a T&G board with a bead milled down the middle is kind
of a nice look too - used to be used on wheelhouses and such of medium-sized
fishing boats.
Surf content? Wayull, if you saw the latest Surfer's Journal, Port Orford
cedar would make a pretty good and usable board, better than walnut
certainly.

Wayull - we use white cedar here, a species that's really a juniper and thus
closely related to cypress. Holds up ok. I've seen pine shake roofs hold up
for quite a long time. The pitch is really a plus, acting as a preservative
and bug repellant. Turpentine gets it off your tools quite nicely.

What kind of fiber? Was a lot of asbestos used in that siding back in the

Oops! Forgot the smiley. It was a commentary on the nature of the soil
here. Shovels and mere picks don't do much. A common tillage tool is a
D-6 with rippers. I've grabbed subsurface boulders with the rippers, and
spun the Cat® half way around.
I have 150' trees with roots that go down 2'. Keener stood in a 2' deep
pit that was 15'-20' across, looking up at the root ball of a wind-
fallen Doug Fir. (Nothing better to do that day, he'd already flattened
the surf.)
I'll bet you can really only verify half
that statement. Take your word that you've
been to the cabin, but I'm pretty sure you
haven't been to my place... how many have
you been to?

The statement is based on what posters here have said about themselves
and their living situations over the past 7 or 8 years.

Hi T. Yuben, Foon, Barefoot Adventure & all!!!
I sure have been missing all of you!!! I got back late Friday night,
but my internet connection was down. I had to work long hours
on Sat & Sun to make up for all the extra time I got off to go to
GP (which I much appreciate being given the time off & I had a
_fantastic_ time sharing waves & good times with incredibly
_excellent_, _good fun_ alt.surfing folks....as _all_ of you fellow
alt.surfing folks are!!!). I knew every second, that I was a
very lucky gal to be there with everyone! (Thank You, Team GP!)
I was able to connect to the internet very briefly when I
got home from work & a family gathering late Saturday
night....then, when I came home Sunday night from work,
my internet connection was down again. It just came back
up again a little while ago....and I am so glad to hear you
all again.
Thanks so much for asking, T. Yuben!!!....I have a ton
of posts to catch up on & write. And Foon & G. Wolf,
I will be sure to respond better to this thread, also.
I don't mind people making fun of me or my posting style
at alt.surfing at all & I know that what Foon wrote was in
the very best of good fun spirits & he is an excellent writer.
[Foon, thanks so much for your kind hospitality & generous
spirit, in letting me stop over at the righteous Foonbunker
& for showing me beautiful Ocean Beach....I was so happy to be
there & I look forward to writing more about being how great it
was to be there!!] There is no way on da planet that alt.surfing
would be the same without All of Team PNW & Foon...I admire,
respect, love & appreciate you all _so_ _very_ _much_!!! And I
look forward to replying to this thread more & explain more
about why I feel this way.
And to quote from Foon, who wrote this, whilst poking
fun at poor ol' earnest Dee Dee yet _again_!!! (Foon...
you rascal, you!:o)))):
I Love Youse All!

(Will be posting much very, very long verbously glowing
GP reports....and an equally glowing report of Tom Keener's
stop over in my hood last month....very soon!!!! Thank You
Foon, Rod, KC & Lana, Surfsarge, SteveM, Myroni, Todd,
Ferg (and Lucy!), Andy, Neal, Edmund & Cape Hatteras
in general, for teaching me so much about surfing, making me
laugh & smile continuously & warming my heart endlessly!
....and thank you _all_ at alt.surfing for the very same
....I hope very much to get to meet all of you in person
& surfing with you sometime down the line, very soon!)
(I am hoping that I don't lose my internet connection again
this week....but in case I do, I wanted to be sure to at
least get this posted....I'll get busy write now finishing up
my reports, for those who feel like reading them...To give you
a small sample: Besides being in the waves with mighty fine,
stoking alt.surfers (everyone of 'em!), I got to play foosball
with SteveM & others not one, but _two_ nights, I got to play
darts with da dartmeister hisself, Myroni!....I got to drink a
rum & strawberry sodee drink (and make a toast) with Ferg....and
eat a Bubba's-kine plate lunch with Foon....and much, much more!!!!)
Thanks for getting that one for me......

I have the same problem. If I say I drive a Saab, some people think

Hey, my Cherokee is a 91' with a cracked windshield, 140K miles,
the interior cloth falling off, and full of sand and smelly damp wetsuits.
...and needs a SERIOUS tune-up!

fine.

More about my surf/snowboard vehicle (note: ON-topic, pix going on the surf
vehicle page ASAP):
I have a 1984 900 S hatchback. "Only" 130K miles on a very well-cared for
engine that'll go another 130K easily. Body is very good (nds. paint, I
think I'll have Sus do it, and barely a touch of rust). The engine rips. All
new suspension, brakes, clutch over the last two years, done when I could
afford it. 28mpg at 75mph and rock solid at 90+.
But enough about my car...even though it is surf-related. It gets me
anywhere there's surf.
> My wife dries a sweet 98' VW Jetta
I used to have a 1984 Jetta GLI, which I drove from Mass. to San Francisco
when I moved out there, and had out there for a couple of years. My ex-gf
and I took the scenic route camping -- through New Orleans, going 7500 miles
total (55K on the odometer) cross-country, four weeks on the road, without a
hitch. That was a good car. A friend of mine has a 1999 or 2000 Jetta. Yeah,
that's a sweet ride.
Too bad the U.S. hasn't figured out how to make long-lasting, comfortable,
fast, reliable surf-friendly vehicles yet. Except maybe an old Jeep Cherokee
(pre-yuppiefication), mid-80s F-150 4X4 w/cap, probably a few others, or a
Chevy Tahoe.
Oh, never mind, that last one was a joke. That's what Surff drives, with a
big Mickey Mouse face on the rear window. :)

Nice quote. Especially the upright
part.
Surff
When I purchased it new it was either that or the Hummer.
The f150 gets better gas mileage and the maintanence and
sticker price cost about half the Hummer.
The f150 is better for surf. I can throw mass boards in the bed.
7'6" fit just fine cross ways. Can sleep in the back seat. It folds
up and lays down so you can put a thermarest and crash out
nice with room for other shit up front. I've got racks so I can
carry 4 boards on top, a cord of wood in the bed and chainsaws
and mass tools up front if need be.

That sounds like a good rig. I have wanted a 4X4 F-150 w/cap for some time.
But I have lived in cities since college (Boston, SF, NYC, now a small city,
Providence), so trucks have not been the most convenient option, otherwise I
would have bought a used one already.
A buddy of mine in Narrangansett had a really "refined" surf truck, what I
would consider one of the ultimate surf vehicles I have ever seen. It was a
Dodge, 4WD, circa maybe 1992, maroon with cap. He welded a home-made
iron-bar roof/carry rack using 1-inch square "tubing," and affixed it to the
roof of the cap. On top of that, he had a 7-ft by 2-ft. by 2-ft. or so
carrying box (also which he made) on one side, a board rack on the other
half. Sort of on the side of the rack, he had fashioned a very sturdy
mountainbike rack.
Inside, he lined the bed with industrial rubber decking, the kind with
little no-slip circles. He had a bench/bed along one side with carpet
covering it. Lots of little storage compartments along the sides. It even
had a shower contraption made from a big heavy-duty bag and a tube with
shower head type attachment. He'd put the bag filled with water up on the
roof and rinse off after surfing, or when he just needed a quick shower.
I haven't seen him in a while, unfortunately. He was quite a crafty fellow,
a freelance building contractor, and a very good surfer. We used to surf and
smoke the peace pipe pretty often a few years ago.

Make that 'about a third or less', even if you got a diesel and every other
damned option they had with the Ford. And the Ford diesels run pretty good.

Yah, ya can't beat a _real_ pickup . What's with these yuppie scum
imitations with four big doors and a 4' long bed?? I don't get it, what'll
they hold beyond a cooler?
The 'mass tools' part is important - you go off the beaten track, you gotta
expect something to go wrong sooner or later and it's you that's gotta fix
it. Double set of wrenches, electrical stuff, sockets, bars and hammers and
such, plus a few essential spares and a coffee can or two of nuts and bolts
and screws.

Wayull - still not crazy about the jeeps, though a buddy of mine has an old
gray four speed six cylinder Cherokee he swears by.... I distrust automatic
transmissions myself....

Yea. I always carry a chainsaw w/18 inch bar and the machete.
Lately I've been packing the Sawsall, Skillsaw and drill...

I understand whatchya meant. :) My priorities are straight as an arrow,
(except when the waves are *that* good<G>) and work is miraculously
mushroom clouding for me atm. Just got 4 calls in 3 days for different
projects to dig into. Plus the place that put my work on halt is picking up.
I alsways come through in the end. My luck.

A buddy of mine had one, too. His was beige, prolly mid-80s. Somehow
the DODGE lettering on the hood got turned into GOD. He built his own
camper. Since he spends a lot of time in Baja, he has a lot of
specific ideas of what a surf vehicle needs. One, it needs a
refrigerator, not just a cooler. (When you're deep in Mex for weeks
and ice ain't just a walk away, ya gotta keep the beer cold.) Also,
the back door should be full height, opening on the side. Life's too
short to scrunch in and out all the time.
He could give a dissertation on the perfect Baja vehicle.

what lp are you talking about?
lp - i don't have a surf vehicle, i usually surf in front of my house.

Why - do you like replacing clutches ?
TOday's automatic transmissions are more reliable, require
less frequent servicing, get better gas mileage, and are easier
to drive. The only reason stick shifts still exist in consumer
cars is that some drivers like to convince themselves there is
some benefit to the stick.

All you need is an attendant teen babe to carry
your board across the parking lot for you and
stand at attention holding your towel for you
while you surf.
:^)
Mike
My buddy Mike would give him a run w/
his old VW bus. On his extended trips,
he'd haul spare heads and various parts, and
could buy anything else he needed for the
'matchine' down there.
swing axles are near as good for offroad and
sand as 4wd.
Rack the boards on top, but you can also lock
them inside. Place to sleep, places to put that
Mexican family of 6 that needs a ride into town.
Connor is STILL pissed off, btw, at that fat kid
who walked by and told his mom that my old bus was
a 'piece of junk' when we saw you this summer.
I keep telling him 'It IS a piece of junk, Connor,
that's the POINT!'

Better to replace a clutch than a transmission.
