I just bought a brand new import car. It's black, two door, very
cheap, and very tiny.

What can I do to goth it up and make it look more cyber? Any ideas?

Blacklights! At Target they have this neon wire you can install around your
console, dashboard, and basically any place you want. It lights up. Although,
you need superglue to install it. I would suggest going to a car detailing
shoppe, they do that sort of thing too. Granted, it is more expensive, but it
looks better and you won't have superglue. A neon steering wheel cover,
something funky to hang from ya rearvier mirror, groovy seatcovers couldn't
hurt either. Depending on the laws in your state, there are always the neon
lights for around your liscence plate and the undercarriage of your car as
well. Don't forget the futuristic chrome rims!

Ahh, that sort of shit is known as "rice", not something that you really
aspire to do.

I've always liked your .sig, by the way :)

How about monster fur seat covers and kwug (steering wheel cover)?
The whole thing with car customization is that it all starts to look
pretty fast-and-furious really really easily. Bleh. But if thats what
you like, then go for it.

How about that rainbow sparkle window tint? I love that stuff. They also have
rainbow sparkle wax or wash (not sure which) now if they just made it in silver
:)

I plan on learning to drive, I have cars picked out and so many
freaking' ideas. I read Low Rider magazine and love seeing some of the
stuff in there!
Cheap things you can do:
-Fun fur weel cover in a neon shades. Check accessorie stores like
Afterthoughts and you can get them for under $5!
-decals, there is a mall stand here that does custom ones
-glittery plastic floor covers

More pricey things include
-rims....euro cars have so many options. to me a civic with nice rims
stands out!
-light up/flashing/gadget sound system
-under lighting

Pick up Low rider or a custom car magazine that shows euro!

Well, what I intend to do to my car which is a white 92 grand am.
Nothing great or unique, but it takes me places. Since I cannot change
the color due to it diminishing the value I intend on adding silver
(plain metal silver) decals on the bottom, gas circle and body tire
rims. I also intend on changing the tire rims and changing the windows
to a silver reflective tint. I think I also want to change the light
(back&front) covers to a clear cover. Making sure that the surrounding
areas of lights are silver. I do not know to many descriptive "car"
words so hopefully you all are getting a picture of what I mean.
Maybe, that will help.... by getting ideas. Yet, there is so much that
you can do since your car is black. Just think of decals, which are
cheaper then air painting. Also, there are different tints for windows
that are so cool. I suggest checking out auto body magazines...

Eh - beware. Despite what the laws say, or were intended to apply to, they
give you a ticket for them, at least in New York. I had awesome red ones under
my Z28, and they used a law intended to regulate those flashing emergency
lights to give me an illegal lights ticket. I tried to contest it and the DA
threated me. Cute.
I've seen the skull valve caps. I admit they're cute, I'm too afraid of
people stealing them though. Grrr.

it, but I don't know if it is yet.

It's a two door Hyundai Accent GS 2002. I'm so embarrassed. My last
two cars were Pontiac Firebirds ('92 Trans Am and '93). But I wrecked
both while driving too fast (I won't even tell you about the
motorcycle I wrecked...I'm a automobile killer), so now it's a cheap,
safe, slow and practical Hyundai for me.

Air painting? Great idea! I could airbrush something Gigeresque on the
hood and/or sides. Hmmm. That would probably cost alot of $$$, but
it's worth looking into.

Also, there are different tints for windows

True, but I'm looking for something gothy. Hehe, I just thought of
Craig Morrison and rubber spikey car seats. There's no such product,

Most of my life i wanted a 64 Implala. I think I was the only girl with
Impala pictures in her room. I would drool over Low Rider magazine when
they had a nice 64. The thing is they are hard to come by. In high
school I was going to buy one but the price was bad for all the work
that had to be done.

I want my car to have that 'bling bling' touch. Rims, a nice stereo
system (this is uber important), a cool paint job (black with re/pink
flakes or redish high shine gloss over black so when the sun
hits...watch out!) and custom velvet interior.

In junior high/high school my friends and I would cruise in a 65 impala,
then my friends boyfriend had a baby blue 2 impala!

Hmmm. I've had two accidents myself... and strangely neither of them have happened while
driving fast.... though one of the cars was a fast car (1989 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II). Havent
wrecked a motorcycle yet... though I dont ride. Yet. (soon!)

Anyways... I'd avoid addung undercarriage lighting or chrome unless you want to get picked
on at stoplights by import enthusiasts. Some red interior lighting might work.... maybe
some carbon fiber interior trim. (Black and modern). As for wheels... get something thats
a nice burnished silver... and not too big... I dont know what size wheels the Accent
comes with (I'm thinking 14").. but I wouldnt go over 16" on that car. Then again...
anything over 16 or 17 on most cars is a waste.

Remember kids: always check with all state laws before spending a
fortune on accessories. Here in Michigan the neon under-lighting is
illegal and you will get hefty tickets for it.

Also, if you plan on getting your windows tinted, make sure that the
tint doesn't exceed what is allowed by law. Again, here you can't have
anything but "basic" tint because of issues with safety and police. If
they can't see you in the car, you get a ticket if you're pulled over.
(And it's also "probable cause" to pull you over and look for anything
else if they spot you and the guy isn't having a good day)

The only thing I've done to muh beeoootiful brand new 2002 Chevrolet
Tahoe (dark metallic green, tan leather interior) has been put my Cork
(Ireland) license plate on the front. And lots and lots of wax
everywhere. =) Until it at least hits 5k miles, I can't even make myself
put a tasteful sticker on it. It's my baby. *melt*

Heh.

Now *my* dream...

Near my house is the Morris Minor Millenium Garage. Outside is a black
1967 2-door saloon. I'd like it even better if it was a 4-door fifties
model, but at 650.00 UK, it keeps looking at me with those big sad
headlamps...

The plan: pass test, buy little black car or one of it's relatives which
are in need of a respray. Sit it outside my house looking too rough to
steal.

Move to a better area. Have the car resprayed in BRIGHT METALLIC BLUE &
made into a convertible (they do that, & it's cheaper to buy the car &
get it converted than buy a convertible) & cover all the seats in blue
leather or velvet. Mebbe I need silver trim & dashboards, maybe black...

Thing is, I wouldn't dare leave a car like that in our street *sigh*
even though it would be highly identifiable if someone took it.

Am I too paranoid?

No inside lighting, dangly toys or other distracting stuff for me,
though, my instructor says it's bad news.

Geeze, I see TONS of those fancied up import cars all OVER the place! (Most of
the drivers have fancied up attitudes to match).

But, in regard to the original poster, I don't think adding accessories would
look too FastAndTheFurious since he's aiming for a goth motif. I know you can
buy different headlight/brakelight kits to make your lights look more
interesting. I like the ones that are solely red and white, and kind of look
like those flat stove burners. (Anyone know what I'm talking about?) I know the
more prominent import car companies like Honda and Mazda have plenty of light
replacement kits available, but I'm not sure about Hyundai.
I'd at least suggest replacing the orange lights with clear, to get a cleaner
red/black appearance. (I'm thinking orange would throw off the goth motif).
White or red light on the undercarriage of the car would look really good as
well. Also, does the car have a spoiler? Spoilers look really futuristic to
me...I dont know why, but they add a lot of cyber-feel.
There are always body kits, too...I bet you could find some pretty neat body
kits, if you are willing to plunk down a good bit of money. Putting a body kit
on a new car is kind of a waste of money, tho. If your car was damaged, and
*needed* a new front end, a body kit would fix and update it all in one shot.
Tinted windows are a really good idea, if it didn't already come with them.
They add such a clean finish, and really add a lot of gothiness to black cars.
Plus, they protect you and your interior from all kinds of sun damage. (I'm
thankful for my window tint mainly because the inside of my car always looks
like a homeless drag queen has been living in there. I'm neither homeless, nor
a drag queen, but damn am I messy!)
Ooh! You can also change the colour of the lights on your dash panel. Orange
and turquoise dash lights can really blow a colour scheme. You can also add
different coloured backlighting to your gas pedal, under the passenger side
dash, and other spots... it's an interesting addition if you can find the stuff
(and the people) to install it.
Then there are all the other things that people do with import cars...like
fancy exaust pipes, lowering, and custom rims. They all add to the look,
definitely. A lot of people spend money on these attributes because it's the
"in" thing to have souped up import cars. As long as you are aiming for a
certain feel, and the car really reflects your personality and lifestyle, it
won't end up looking like another trendy rave-mobile.
But you can still expect to have trendy rave-mobiles wanting to challenge you
at stoplights.

Amberella. Off with yourhead to reply.

My mind says at Afterthoughts or a car store. It has been awhile. I was
thinking of a DIY way to get these. Simple and cheap....I came up with
this: Buy clear floor covers, glitter spray paint (the clear kind with
the glitter in it), spray pait each underside of the floormat and let
dry. Do not do the top unless you want to track glitter all over the
place. The glitter will stick under the mat and you can clean it out
when ever you llike.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out a good light color. I was thinking

That is the best idea I've heard sofar. The first thing I'm going to
do is change all of the interior lighting, and then work on the
undercarriage lighting.

Well, first I need more $$$ to do all of this. I have an interview
tomorrow for a management position at Radio Shack. In case anyone else
is interested, I hear that Radio Shack is currently looking for people
to train to fill in alot of manager positions. I'm not sure if the
need is nationwide, so don't quote me on this. A part-time job like
that would help me fix up my car and help w/ school in the fall. And
give me extra cash to buy more J-Rock CDs. hehe. Wish me luck.

i like the cure :)

That's based on Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes.
It makes me sick that whoever 'invented' those

something like that! He's such an innocent in the

Its not a Turbo II is it? Because if it is, and its in good shape.. those are
worth a bundle to the right person. Very rare. Actualy, 91's in general are
pretty rare.

Right now my '91 MR2 is awaiting a new engine as well.... but I might have to

A spoiler is a lip or rear wing on the rear deck or hatch. Its designed to generate

aftermarket spoilers actually create anything but drag. Odds are you're better off
without one.

A body kit is a set of replacement bumpers and sides skirts (running boards) that
alter the look of the car. There are also replacement fenders and hoods for some
models of car.

Aaand, correct me if I'm wrong, but a front wheel drive car don't need
no downforce on the back tires, a front spoiler would be more helpful.

That said, I think a small tasteful spoiler looks mighty snazzy on
some cars...just as long as it's not one of those hideous bolt on
aluminum park benches, which, as a friend of mine constantly rants, is
actually hindering performance on a small, fwd import.

Not always true. The rear tires of a front wheel drive car are still responsible for
maintaining its stability at speed. If the rear end gets light, even if the car is FWD,
things can get hairy. Of course, in 90% of street driven cars, thats never an issue. So
any kind of large spoiler on a FWD car (or most RWD cars) is kind of silly.... unless you
spend a lot of time at speeds of 120mph... which some of us do.... *coughs*

You know... all that said... Its really really rare, but there are Honda Civics
and Accords and Hyundais out there that will utterly destroy a Dodge Viper on a
drag strip. Rare, but they do exist.

For example, there's a Hyundai Tiburon with two engines... one in front and one
in back, turbocharged... it will run 9 second quarter miles. And it looks
almost totally stock. No one would suspect a thing.

Of course, cars like that are exceedingly rare, but they do exist.

For only about 5000 dollars, its possible to make a new Subaru WRX outperform a
Ferrari 360 Modena... at least in a straight line.... and with a little extra
cash for suspension components, it will hang around a racetrack too.

Oh, I can easily believe it's possible to make a small, lightweight car like
that move very fast if you put a big powerful engine in them---I was
thinking more in terms of aesthetics, I guess---it'll never look right, and
I guess the thought of actually racing never occurred to me...

No.. no big engines... usually nothing bigger than 1.8 or 2.0 liters. Not like
the 7 and 8 liter engines fast domestics use.

But... yeah, from an athstetic point of view... there are plenty of ugly imports

Yeah, but I can see the point in doing that. Higher horsepower engines are
going to take more petrol - which costs a *lot* of money for any car, much
less one that can go 100 or above. It would look nice if the hood was
popped, but it would be like burning money. Bodywork is just paid for and
then it's there, without paying more constantly.

Yes, I suppose that is the case in the UK... but here, those kinds of cars are
criticized heavily. Here you're not fast until you're putting out *at lest* 300
horsepower, or you're very light. My car, which is considered very slow (it
runs a 16 second or higher quarter-mile) has 135 HP. The turbo version has over
200, and can go to 350 with some work. There are street driven cars here with
1000 HP. Excessive, but still. I would rather have a decent looking car that
was fast than a flashy car that couldnt get out of its own way.

However, I understand the differences in car culture. My preference is speed
over flash, but I've seen some simply brilliant body and interior work on
British cars. True, it would be nice to have some more power, but the
craftsmanship displayed in the body work is quite nice. You guys (I'm assuming
that you live in the UK by your use of the term 'petrol' :-) also have a very
good mass transit system if I'm not mistaken. You dont need to rely on your
cars to get around quite as much.

Now... that said, with a turbocharged car, unless youre constantly boosting
(revving high enough that the turbocharger starts working) the cars retain fuel
efficency. Not true of large-displacement V8s. Small displacement motors that
have high redlines also retain efficency. We have 250 HP Honda Civics that get
35 MPG if the owner drives conservively.

Another thing, in Europe, there are lots of diesel engines. I'd love a diesel
engine. Theyre powerful, get good mileage, and are easy to upgrade. Of course,
most Americans hate diesel. Oh well :-(

Random thought loosely appropriate to this thread---I really, really want my
next car to be a Suzuki X90 that says "Dominion Tank Police---Bonaparte
MT-9" on the hood. :)

Oh, and, for Patrick---I know some people bitch about the X-90 being
low-powered and rough-riding, but I've regretted it every time I've ever
driven anything *not* made by Suzuki[1] and I've never been big on fast or
luxuriant cars in the first place---anyway they are damn cute!

[1]my Swift has lasted me through 12 years of rough treatment( and still
going strong, knock wood) and some surprising accident survivals, and has
never failed to start even at -10, whereas my brief interludes with both
Toyota and Dodge nearly got me killed because the steering is worthless on
both (Dodge, at least the model I had, is known for that problem but I
thought Toyota was supposed to be decent) not to mention always leaving me
stranded anytime the temp dropped.
I like my mom's Sidekick a lot, too, and my family also owned and loved our
Samurai and the original limited edition Brute(?) from the early 70s( which
was beyond amazing but way off-topic and *long* to talk about---suffice to
say it was constructed such as to literally turn in its own space like a
tank. I think THAT should be a mandatory safety feature on all vehicles,
and have no idea why it's never been done since. )

Wellll...maybe not *quite* like Bonaparte, but the X-90( which it seems
they're not making this year :P) and the new 2 door Vitara definitely both

Nice bike---though I never really even mastered plain bicycles, so I don't
think I should ride it! Blue and black would be cool, or black with neon
pink or green striping has come into my head for some reason....I also once
saw a rather good paintjob on a bike---it was leopard print, but done in
metallic colors and very subtle, so you had to be at just the right angle to
see it. I also once saw someone riding a bullet bike wearing a matching
bodysuit and helmet---I mean bike, suit and helmet all matched perfectly,
fire engine red with black visor---he was being an idiot darting in and out
of traffic and driving up the sidewalk at insane speeds, but how incredibly
anime! Very mixed emotions that one gave me!

Well at least he had the good sense to wear proper gear. Most of the fools
around here ride their sportbikes in nothing but a helmet, shorts, and a
Tshirt... often with sandals. I mean I understand that its hot out.... but they
make summer leathers.... and a full-leather-suit with armor, boots, gloves, and
helmet just looks sooooooooo cool. Plus... the idea of getting road rash should
be enough to scare anyone off... especially on the hands.

But as far as suzuki cars go... the Vitara is pretty nice. For some reason I've
started to take a liking to large black sedans... I'm currently in love with
this one:

http://www.nis-knacks.com/images/qm45/y34cedric.jpg

Its a Nissan Cedric / Infiniti M45. With that paintjob and perhaps some
different wheels it could almost be a modern-goth landbarge... Its also quite
fast. (340 HP)...

Oh, I know. You're not going to win a single award at a car show in the US
unless you're hitting 300mph and you'll be laughed at if your horsepower is
what came with the car.

My preference is both, but here the former isn't really possible.

I do live in the UK, but I wouldn't say I'm one of "you guys", as I'm an
American expat. :>

Very humorous. Thank you for the laugh. ;>

True----it was just kind of surreal in a way, not something you'd expect to
see on an ordinary city street. I was like "Holy Shit!! It's Bubblegum

Yeah, I see a lot of that, too---makes me cringe. Frankly it makes me
cringe even when they're not riding, for sun protection reasons, but with
the added risk of accident injuries...yeek...all I can say is "Darwin

Too big for me, but not bad if you've got a bunch of friends to go joyriding
with. I'm actually somewhat limited in my choice of vehicles by my
height---you'd think 5'0" wouldn't be THAT far out of the norm, but whenever
I've gone car shopping I've had to reject probably more than half the
possible choices on the basis of being unable to see over the dash or reach
the pedals. And now there's the added danger of the #$$!$$% airbags doing
in everyone under 5'6"---anyone know the legality or other info on getting
them removed---I'm not looking forward to spending the rest of my life in
pre-1992 cars on pain of Death by Safety Feature. I guess we are wandering
far off topic here, though, apologies to those not interested!

Found a cute bat window decal here:

Comes in eight different colors, too.
you could stick one on your windscreen, or plaster
the car with a flock of them.

Well, actually... its a little different than that.... but judges to like to see
money put into engine work as well as body work.

Well I guess I was mistaken on that count... *shrug*. I'd always heard that the UK
had good mass transit.

I still cant imagine riding on the sidewalk..... I mean I can understand a
confident rider darting in and out of traffic... (its even legal to ride between
cars here in California, as long as you dont go more than 10mph faster than the
cars.. or something similar to that).

Yeah... seriously. All I can say is that when I start riding.. full suit for me.
THe better to save my hide, and my gothy paleness. :-P

Well, I normally prefer small cars.... smaller the better in fact (light =
fast). However... for some reason, that particular Nissan strikes me as being
desireable... and I normally hate cars with more than two doors (or seats for
that matter.. lol).

Well, technicly its illegal to remove or disable your airbags. However, the SCCA
(Sports Car Club of America) has a rule that states that no car in competition,
be it on a race track or at an autocross (racing along a course laid out by
cones in a parking lot), shall have an active airbag. So, anyone in the SCCA who
has an airbag equipped car does either one of two things: installs an airbag
kill-switch, that allows you to turn the airbag off, or they replace their
steering wheel with an aftermarket unit that simply doesnt have an airbag. Both
are illegal, but you arent likley to be ticketed for a kill switch... especially
if its located somewhere not obvious. And in fact, you're not likley to even
have anyone be suspicous unless you're the voctim of profiling... which a lot of
import sports cars are. (unfortunately, anyone with a lowered suspension these
days is just asking for cops to pull them over and go snooping about in thier
cars.. *especially* if you're driving a Honda)

So... if you get a car with an airbag... inquire about having a kill switch
installed.

I thought for sure that a couple years back, after the data started coming
in about airbag problems for folks of shorter stature, that legislation was
passed requiring dealers to disable airbags for customers who requested
it. So disabling them may not be illegal at all, and you might even be able
to get a dealer to take care of it for free. I'd call one up at any rate and
ask.

Looks nice...and cheap too! Hehe. Reminds me... I used to call my
first car (a black Firebird) The Batmobile. Still haven't thought up a
name for my new car.

My mind's all clouded with job searching right now. I have an
interview tommorrow with Time Warner. But once I get my job issues all
sorted out, and have some free time, I'm going to put sme of these
good car detailing/decal ideas to use.

It's pretty variable. Cornwall for example is fairly well connected up
compared to some places, despite the complaints of the locals - I discovered
just how much better than some places when I moved to Cirencester, in
Gloucestershire, and found that there was a bus from there to the county
town Gloucester on a Monday afternoon, and one returning on a Thursday
afternoon!! These towns are all of about 20 miles apart. And the train was
no better option - when Beeching crippled the rail service, one of the
stations dropped was Cirencester, so the nearest station is Kemble, 6 miles
away. The buses at that time had no relation to the train timetable (and a
taxi was out of the question given the cost), so you could spend 2 hours
(and about £10) getting from Ciren to Glos without any difficulty.

Currently the other half and I both work in London, but live a looooong way
out. Because of the price of trains, we have to stay with family during the
week - we have to catch the 5.35 am train out on a Monday because that one
is "only" £28 each return, whereas the later ones are deemed commuter trains
and cost £55 return. A season ticket for daily travel is in the region of
£6000 per year I think, which we can't afford quite apart from the fact it
is a 2+ hour journey in each direction. I work p/t, so when the other half
starts to work from home and matches my 2 days in the office, we can drive
to where we stay - £12 petrol, quite a massive saving over public transport.

Anyway, to get back somewhat on topic, planned for our little dark blue
Saxo, soon to be a commuting machine, better seat covers! Once I get my
sewing machine repaired (I think the timing is on the verge of going - it's
still catching the bobbin thread, but is making that ominous k-chunk sound
with each stitch, so I'm not using it until it gets a rather overdue
service) I shall start seeing what I can do about it. That way I can also
buy and cover one of those swivel seat thingies that mean you don't have to
twist to turn round to get out of the car - I'll need one later this year,
but they are ghastly brown vinyl - yuk! I anticipate padding it and
covering it in something decadent and plush :o)

It was a slight exaggeration, but IME with US car shows it's pretty close.
It might be different from region to region, though, and from car brand to
car brand; I'm most familiar with New England shows and Chevrolets.

Depends on the area and what your definition of good mass transit is, but
on the whole... :/

*gah* i was *THIS* close to buying a hearse, a 1952 packard hearse
with suicide doors and 3-way coffin loader still intact, for $3,500,
but some guy emailed the seller about it 2 hours before me and bought
it! i went into mourning, let me tell you! Hearses are big here, we
have a car club specifically for hearse owners, the Grim Rides. (car
clubs are big here too, or maybe i jsut think so because i have out
with lots of rockabilly and psychobilly people.)
http://members.aol.com/hearseq/grimrides.htm

Right now, i own a '69 mustang... and its almost completely restored
to factory, except i had the side vents taken off because i think they
are ugly and ruin the line of the car. I JUST bought (yesterday) a
1963 cadillac limo, and that is HUGE... 23 feet long, decent condition
except needs some body work, upholstery and paint, for $500. I am so
excited! i LOVE old cars, my favorites come between 1942-1958, with
packards, 55-57 cadillacs, select novas and old plymouths being among
my favorites. im still on the look for another hearse that someone
doesnt buy just before me. Im still really sensitive about that :)
