Hi,

Today, to my great joy, I discovered this newsgroup. And, also today, and
also to my great joy, I bought three samplers of the three upcoming Bach
collections. Now I'm wondering what to do. As an adept Bach lover i'd like
to buy all three of them. But being a student greatly limits my budget.

As some of the Dutch reader might know, a big chain of Pharmacy stores,
"Kruitvat", is also bringing out a complete collections, which will only
cost, for about 151 cd's, something like $200. Some of their recording s are
very valuable, with artists as Koopman, Aafje Heinings, James Bowman and
Leonhart. But on the other hand, the recording of their sampler-cd of the
Goldberg variations are among the worst I ever heard.

Then there is the Teldec collection, at $1300 quite a bit more expensive.
The advantage is that most recordings are far more recent, and most of the
pieces are performed by "big" names. The disadvantage is (IMHO), besides the
price, that the cantatas and oratoria are performed by Harnoncourt, who
(again IMHO) is a bit to "german" and "stern" with the music.

Last of all, there is the Hanssler collection. Again, a lot of famous names.
The cantatas are performed by the Oregon Bach festival Orchestra, of which I
had never heard before. But they are much more to my liking than the ones by
Harnoncourt .

Could you please give me some advice, or maybe just you opinions?

Sincerely, Wouter Kees Snoeijers

Hi Wouter,

As to Harnoncourt, you probably should ask which recording of oratorios and
cantatas. He has evolved/developed/lost his principles/faith with respect to
HIP in the last thirty years. If you could compare his '62 recording of the
Brandenburgs and his '83(?) re-recording, the difference becomes immediately
obvious.
The same applies to his rerecording of the Matthew (and I don't know which
one is in the box, if it is his eighties Concertgebouw or his Seventies
concentus musicus, forget about the recent, and the old one is still
impressive)
However, there should be still less difference within the Teldec or the
Haensller set than within the Kruidvat set.
Personally I only heard one item by Aafje Heynis and with all respect, her
voice is unsuited to this music. This means the Kruidvat set will always be
a mixed box, and I would rather go for one overall concept.
I won't buy either edition however, as this would force me to throw away or
sell what I already have...

Best regards,

Sybrand Bakker

Hi Wouter
Dont forget to say, that the Hänssler Edition is about DM 2000.-- (ca.
1150$). Little bit less than Teldec.
I would prefer this Edition (Cantatas are most with Helmut Rilling,
Stuttgart).
Not HIP - but very fine recordings.
I have the same problem - yet too much good cds of different works........
(i never will give them away).
PLEASE: about the Kruitvat-Edition - please give every information you got.
I am very interessted to buy that anyway.......
Sorry about my english - (not my best language yet)
Sincerly
HR
