We're just getting the news here - just seen footage of a plane crash
through the second tower.

Our newsreaders have just said that they have heard a third passenger plane
has also been reported as hijacked/stolen.

And now we have pictures of something burning close by the Pentagon building
in Washington.

Anyone know anything?

Some Palestinian terrorist group appears to be claiming responsibility
according to early reports.

Just heard on the news that a plane has struck the Pentagon.

There is also a fire at the Washington Mall.

It appears the United States is under concerted terrorist attack.

If you are a person who prays, I'd ask you to join me -- I am praying
now for the victims and their families.

I'm also praying that cool heads prevail once all the facts are in.

It appears this was a strategically and horrifically planned terrorist
attack on several major U.S. targets. It is both shocking and devastating -
thousands of lives have undoubtedly been lost. It's also frightening that
there's no way to know when it will end.

My prayers are with everyone who has been touched in any way by this

I've only heard things. Hijacked planes from Boston, crashed
into the buildings. Car bomb near the White House, and a
US helicopter landing on the Pentagon and exploding.

All airports shut down. NYSE shut down. Manhattan sealed off
except for emergency crews. All firefighters and emergency personnel
from all over NY called in to help.

Saw footage on a television monitor here tuned to ABC news, but they
were at the point of repeating things, showing taped footage of the
second tower's fall and getting viewpoints from their on-the-scene
reporters who are saying things like, "I'm okay." instead of anything
that would mean something to the rest of the world.

NO!

The time for cool heads is NOW. NOW. More than any other time,
THIS is when they are needed.

No need for any sort of war. Find those responsible. Ensure they
are responsible. Have them make amends and reparations. Remove
their ability to murder again.

No, I disagree, now is EXACTLY the time for cool heads.

We should find the people responsible, and only them, and remove their
ability to repeat any such action.

I want so dearly for everybody to put their hands up. You have a bit of

I'm sorry for those stuck in airports, attempting to go see
dying grandfathers and sons who are to be married. I'm sorry
that they cannot get there. But ...

when I read quotes like this:

I have an ugly reaction. This is terrible because she

Whazzat and others who think like him need to wake up and understand
something. The Palestinians don't wear turbans, and for all we know Bin
Laden wears hair curlers under his. These are not Muslims any more than
some idiot who caps an abortionist is a Christian. These are people who
have confused their religion, their nationalism, and their paranoid hatred
of Zionism into a fire of destructive will against the world's one great
secular nation. We are indeed entering an era of world war but it is unlike
any seen before, for the enemy is very small in number and completely
determined, and will always use the lives of innocents as both their sheath
and their shield.

But hot fires burn quickly, and I think we'll find theirs can be quenched if
we take the gloves off for once and, once we've verified the real targets,
don't pussyfoot around with them. And as for Palestinian independence,
forget it. Those people are going to learn the meaning of one step forward,
ten steps back.

like an echo, i keep on hearing that kid deck and i encountered on top

god help me, people standing close enough to overhear smiled at it.

My dear nameless one. The U.S. has been warring against half the world
for the last 50 years. This is not happening in a vaccuum. We just had
a war against Yugoslavia, we support the Israeli war on the
Palestinians, we are *still* at war against Iraq, bombing them several
times a week, Clinton bombed an aspirin factory just cuz, and a lot of
American militia types are still outraged by Ruby Ridge and Waco.

We've given a lot of people reason to hate us, and there are a lot of
candidates for this terrorist attack.

Calling for the "obliteration" of somebody, anybody just cuz you're

It is certainly not.

I'm fine. Report on KYW News Radio of a car bomb in Philly. That could
have been unrelated, or someone jumping on a bandwagon. Philly city
gov't shutting down.

Plane down outside of Pittsburgh - Somerset Airport. That's about 350
or so miles from me.

I'm not. Last I heard, all terrorist orgs were falling all over
themselves to deny responsibilities.

I'm confused over the number of airliners we're talking about today.
From what I'm getting from MSNBC and BBC America: 2 that crashed into
the WTC, 1 into the Pentagon, 2 crashed in PA, plus one more I'm not
sure where. United Airlines and American Airlines. Praying for my
friends and family members who work for UAL. I wouldn't be surprised
if, by this time next week, each of us knows someone either directly
or indirectly who was there or physically affected. God. I can't
comprehend this. I feel like I'm watching a movie, or newsreel
footage of something that happened a long time ago in another place.

Hell, the leadership of the country is always a worthy topic of
conversation, or part of a conversation.

There will always be self-involved idiots around. What I
can't figure out it this ... there have been four (!)
CONFIRMED highjacked planes in the space of an hour. I
really thought that the one thing folks had almost totally
eliminated was the ability to hijack a plane. How the hell
did FOUR! of them get highjacked -- two evidently out of
Boston? This is amazing in itself. Howq did this happen?

CBC Radio has Michael Enright on the *afternoon* show
reporting on this. A total first for CBC -- like pulling in
Walter Cronkite ... and Michael's voice is shaking ... I've
never heard him so emotional. We're getting good reporting
on this.

I don't normally pray. But for Stan I will.

This is barbarity beyond reason.

My thoughts are with you all.

What the hell. I'm praying for them all. And all the innocent people we don't
know who've been caught up in this.

No, I'm wrong. They've clarified. As far we know so far, there were
a total of 4 plans. The 2 that crashed into the WTC, 1 in the
Pentagon, and the 1 down in PA. How 4 planes could be hijacked so
quickly...

I find it hard to believe, given my knowledge of the Middle East, that there is
a group with the reach and co-ordination to hit so effectively and in such a
co-ordinated manner. It is possible that things have changed dramatically over
just a few years, but it does hint at the involvement or backing of a
government somewhere.

In that case.....
