Had the pleasure of seeing this movie yesterday, and its absolutely charming!
And hilarious at times. More relevant to RMIM, it has a generous set of songs
in a wide range of voices dotting its 2hr40min length, composed by a lesser
known MD - Vinod. Very nice songs, btw... all of them : the ever-popular "lara
lappa", a couple of lovely Rafi/Lata duets, some dainty chorus numbers, etc..

I was wondering if anyone knew the singers for some of the songs (maybe from
the GeetKosh or something). Lemme go ahead and post the entire soundtrack
here... fill in the "??", whoever knows them, please.

Ek Thi Ladki (1949) *ing: Meena Shorey, Motilal, Kuldeep Kaur
Music: Vinod
Lurics: Aziz Kashmiri

1 dilli se aaya bhai tingu (??, chorus)
- catchy tune, kind of silly lyrics... it's picturized as a special
function at a hotel, following close on the heels of a ventriloquist
act.

2 arey main haar gayaa (Rafi, ??)
- another kind-of irreverent duet, rather funny lyrics. filmed on a
couple of dancing extras

3 chaandni raat hai (?? - sounds a bit like Jagjit Kaur, but I don't think
it's her)
- this is probably one of the very few songs picturized on Kuldeep Kaur, I
think. It's a bit aberrant to see her in a romantic duet.

4 lara lappa lara lappa (Lata, Rafi, Durrani, chorus)
- not much needs be said

5 ghat kaari matwaari (?? <female-voice>)
- very amusing picturization (Motilal and Meena Shorey washing clothes...
the romance is kindled right about now). The voice is very familiar,
but I couldn't quite place it.

6 ab haal-e-dil ya haal-e-jigar (Lata, Rafi)
- the Motilal-Meena Shorey romance has begun by now... a beautiful duet.

7 yeh shokh sitaare yeh shokh sitaare (Lata, Rafi)
- the romance continues.. another lovely duet

8 hum chale duur (a whole cohort of singers, including Lata and Rafi)
- shot on a 'shikara' in Kashmir... it has a "more-saiyanji"-type cox
chant "haiyya ho haiyya". probably has about 5/6 singers plus an
energetic chorus

9 ghir ghir ke aayi badariyaa (Lata)
- the other Lata solo... the tune is decent, and Lata sounds wonderful.

I am going by my ears for this one. I think it is Manna Dey. I dont have
the geetkosh, but I can probably give the soundtrack another hear and give
you my guesses:)

I haven't had that pleasure yet. But I remember reading a few things about
the film. It was a smash hit when released. And Meena Shorey was
responsible for bringing fashion craze of wearing punjabi dress. It is very
common now a days but apparently in those days it was not common outside
Punjab. Unfortunately she left for Pakistan after the partition and died in
utter poverty.

Isn't it Chitalkar?

This is what caused me reply to the post. IMO this is the best song of the
film. (Yes. Lara lappa is the most popular I know.) Vinod's best
compositions from this film along with Anmol Rattan, Wafa ,Sabjbaug etc. are
comparable to the best of anybody IMO (and his others in Aag ka darya,
Makkhichoose etc. are comparable to any worst out there.). I just love this
song. Whenever I thought of the songs about baadals and badariya's etc.,
this one readily comes to my mind first. Along with Rajkumari's 'Ghir ghir
ke, ghir ghir ke aasaman par, chhane lagi ghatayen' from 'Bawre nain' and
Khurshid's 'Ghata ghana ghor bhor, Mor machaye shor' from Tansen to name
some.

Anant

Saw this movie little over a year ago along with 'ek do tiin'(1951). Both have
same crew, including producers/director/cast/music director etc. The exception
is that 'ek do tiin' is an Asha dominated track.

Here are some details that I remember for 'ek thii la.Dakii'.

>Ek Thi Ladki (1949) *ing: Meena Shorey, Motilal, Kuldeep Kaur

No idea. The song seems to been just added into the movie. Doesn't fit into the
movie at all.

>2 arey main haar gayaa (Rafi, ??)
> - another kind-of irreverent duet, rather funny lyrics. filmed on a

I think the female singer is some Vinodini Dikshit. Not sure. I don't know
anything about her.

I am trying to recollect this song, but it is just not coming to mind.

Zeenat Begum.

>6 ab haal-e-dil ya haal-e-jigar (Lata, Rafi)
> - the Motilal-Meena Shorey romance has begun by now... a beautiful duet.

A complete stanza is also filmed at the end of the movie (I think this stanza
is a new one).

Lata, Rafi, Satish Batra and others. There is at least one more female voice in
the song. Probably the same one as in song #2.

How do you mean "doesn't fit into the movie" ?
Anyway, this is the first song in the movie, not filmed on any of the main
characters... it's, as I mentioned, some special function at the hotel where
the "fake" princess (Meena Shorey) is staying. Given the lyrics of the song,
one wonders about the average age (or IQ) of the hotel guests :-) The tune's
quite sweet, though... apparently the singer is Geeta Roy, but doesn't quite
sound like her except in a few places.

Hmm.. never heard of her.

Here's some extended lyrics, maybe they'll help :
chaandni raat hai gulshan mein bahaar aayi hai
lutf aa jaaye jo aese mein kahiin aa jaayen
unse kehnaa ke woh pal bhar ke liye aa jaayen
dil-e-betaab ko zaraa aakar samjhaa jaayen

It sounds like Geeta, Rajkumari, Jagjit Kaur, etc. at different times - very sweet
voice. And it's not a duet, it's a solo. As for the picturization, it's on Kuldeep
Kaur and Motilal, in the earlier part of the movie.

I know you are not very fond of Manna Dey Neha, but, really now do you want to
say he sings in female voices too :). Actually, that would put him in the same
league as Kishore wouldn't it? :) :)

Actually, that is not true :)

The "third voice" is not that of Durrani, according to
film journalist Nalin Shah. Apparenly he confirmed this
with Durrani himself. The singer is Satish Batra.

I saw the video some years back, and THAT version contained only the last few
lines of this superhit song. The video makers had filled up the earlier
portions with some commercials of theirs - it was so disappointing.

Apparently, now there is a different version, with the complete song, I guess.

Happy listenings.

About to stop subscription of AOL and start another ISP. Decided to test
newgroup features of my new browser. Thought instead of testing with empty
message let me test with meaningful content...

Long back in our home we had 78 RPM records. One of these was Lata-sung:
lara lappaa ... It had words "adhi tappa, adhi tappa" . Dont know what
these words mean. It may not even be the song of this thread.

Among other songs on these 78 RPM records we had, some had remained with me
as tenacious memories...

One was a song (possibly shamshad sung): duniya ka majja lelo duniya tumhari
hai, ye duniya tumhari hai. There were words in this song: duniya ko lat
maro duniya salam kare, jhuk jhuk salam kare. Although I had seen credits
printed on record now I donot remember which movie it is from. Name Duniya
comes to mind. Also I remember vaguely a song-book with songs of Duniya.
If any of you know song-book publishing in Calcutta you know these
song-books. Usually each song-book had songs of four movies. This
particular song-book was for Mahal. I may be confusing cast of Mahal with
that of Duniya, but possibly Duniya had Ashok Kumar in lead role. My
efforts to locate a video of Duniya has drawn a blank. I borrowed a Duniya
with Anil Kapoor and Ashok Kumar etc. You know how these Indian video
rentals work. There was just mention of Ashok Kumar in the entry for this
movie in the database of this rental service, no indiaction about year etc.

Recalling other songs in our 78 RPM record collection...

One was a multi lingual song which was two sides long. It had parody of
folk/movie songs of various languages. The Gujarati portion of this song
(as also other language portions) was prefaced by a male singer teasing the
female for paying too much attention to others (madrasi, bangali, etc) and
he says: ...ame shun khota chhiye, aam avo ne... Whereupon the female
offers to become a Gujaratan of Kalabadevi and ply the man with chivda or
something like that. The Gujarati stanza had words like: loko juve jone
tara shanagar ne, koini najar na lagi jaye re. (Trans.: People are looking
at your shringar, beware kisiki nazar lag jayegi ...)

Other songs in these records included:

ab mera kaun sahara (Lata)
kaise kah dun(2) bajariya ke tir(?), wo to kano me kahne wali bat hai
(?Lata)
hawa me udata jaye mora lal dupatta malmal (Lata)
tere dwar khada ik jogi (Hemant, Nagin)
mera dil ye pukare aja (Lata, Nagin)
tan dole re mera man dole re mera (Lata, Nagin)
loji bujh gayi bijalee pyar ki (KK, Mahalon ke Khwab)
e jane jigar, ghut ghut ke agar (KK and Asha, Mahalon ke Khwab)
khoya khoya chand(Rafi, Kala Bazar)
sach huwe sapane tere, jhum le o man mere (Asha, Kala Bazar)
tu mera chand me mein teri chandani (Suraiya and Sham )
na ye chand hoga, na tare rahenge (Hemant and Geeta each solo, Shart)
jiya dole(2) ... aise hi tu aja re (Lata)
ajao tadapte hain araman, ... ab raat guzarne wali hai (Lata, Awara)
chali chali re patang meri chali re (Rafi and Lata, Bhabhi)
tie laga ke mana ban gaye janab hero (Lata, Bhabhi)
ai muhabbat zindabad (Rafi, Mughal-e-Azam a very long song on two sides)

One record had harmonium tune of Patita songs played by one my uncle's
friends who had interest in music. These songs are sung by Talat (andhe
jahan ke andhe raste jaye to jaye kahan) and Lata. The Lata song had
similar tune, but different words.
