Hello,
I experimented a lot with gs 6.01 on RedHat 6.2, trying to produce
compressed PDF files from PS sources countaining a large monochrome image
(one or more fax pages).

PS sources are generated from Macintosh, with Laserwriter Printer driver
version 8.6.5

It seems impossible for gs 6.01 to compress 1-bit images when placed into a
PDF file, even if ps2pdf defaults are:

EncodeMonoImages true
MonoImageFilter /CCITTFaxEncode

Even forcing them to that values (passing parameters to ps2pdf
-dEncodeMonoImages=true -dMonoImageFilter=/CCITTFaxEncode
or calling directly gs with an appropriate command line) output is
uncompressed, so the resulting file is quite large, at least 4 times the
file produced by Acrobat distiler 4.

I'm pretty sure of this, but before to give up definitively, I'd like to
know if someone else encountered this problem (and maybe solved it).

Thanks in advance.

The following program converts to CCITTFaxEncode'd PDF
with default settings on both GS 6.01 and GS 6.50 .
