This morning I thought to check out some articles in
the online S.F. Examiner, to find columnist (and
associate editor) Warren Hinckle demonizing gays in his
piece 'Singing the Blues":

http://www.examiner.com/warren_hinckle/default.jsp?story=n.hinckle.0603w

The article was about the closing of a gay bar, known
for its tacky ambience. Read my letter of complaint to
the S.F. Examiner, and you'll understand.

---begin letter to editor:

This morning I thought to check out some articles in
the online S.F. Examiner, to find columnist (and
associate editor) Warren Hinckle demonizing gays in his
piece 'Singing the Blues", dated 06/03/2003.

The article is about the closing of a gay bar, known
for its tacky ambience. But the following quote is what
I mean by Hinckle's anti-gay slur:

"Thursday night, when I bid it adieu, there were two
gays making out in the corner and a customer on the
floor trying to make out with my dog."

Now, I KNOW that even the sleaziest of gay bars don't
allow bestiality...nor do gays have any such reputation
(that is based on truth). I take GREAT OFFENSE at Mr.
Hinckle's crude description of gay clientele, in a time
when our (gay) lives and civil rights are on the line.
Such publication of outright demonization of sexual
minorities only CONTRIBUTES to more gay bashing. And
it's going on right here, in "Gay Mecca." Shades of
Michael Savage!

Sincerely,

Zeke Krahlin
gay activist since 1973

Warren Hinckle is an opportunist hack (who still owes me $600, but
that's another story).

He takes whatever position will get a rise out of people. He once
wrote a book called "Gayslayer" on the Harvey Milk assassination. It
was a pro-gay, progressive-sounding book. He's also written many
articles pretending he was gay. Among the lines I remember, "We went
to Polk Street, picking up chickens who were working the street..."
Yeah, right, Warren Hinckle the john.

Don't fall for Warren Hinckle's crap; he's only trying to get a rise
out of people.

If I fell for his crap, I wouldn't speak out in the
first place. Whether he's just trying to get a rise,
or not...his tacky statement only fuels the fire of
homophobia that ravages our sorry nation. So it goes
WAY BEYOND the idea that he got me to react in anger,
so "ha-ha" I lose. I don't care if I lose his silly
games...for what I am POINTING OUT about his vulgar
antics to demonize queers--WHEN HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER,
after all his years hanging out with gay folk, and
going to their bars--is the real meet of this issue.

Homophobia is homophobia...and his joke as at our
expense (which is to perpetuate ignorance about us as
real-live human beings). No matter how you slice it,
he's being very ugly. Why be an apologist for this
shyster? I know a secret about Tinckle, that no one
else yet knows (except one of Spectrum's editors, who
replied to my grievance against Tinckle: "I was at
their office this morning and let them know personally.
I did not see Florence but asked that she give me a
call." And The S.F. Bay Times printed my letter, pg.
11, July 3):

So what's the secret? Read on, queer netizens:

In 1985 I flew out to Wash. D.C. on my own money, to
stand by the side of a Vietnam Veteran who shot himself
by "The Wall" Jan. 16, of that same year. He was also a
prominent gay activist, whom I had the pleasure to meet
in late '84, before he flew back east.

Fate (in the shape of a bullet) brought us back
together. His name is Randolph Taylor; we fell in love;
and he has since disappeared from my life in 1993. (He
was a VERY tormented soul, and would NOT let me know
where he was for lengthy cycles of our friendship. You
may learn more about him (including photos and news
articlses) at:

http://www.gay-bible.org/somalia/index_somalia.htm

On that page, you'll discover proof of my longterm
association with Randolph.

Well, I was already in touch with our local Bay Area
media (as well as CNN), about drumming up support for
this man. Warren Tinckle was one of my very supportive
journalist contaces. He was also the main reporter
covering Randolph Taylor's 40-day fast in early '84.
(That was to convince the Dems to give 15-mins. on the
floor of the S.F. Democratic Convention, to a prominent
Vietnam Veteran...including possibly Ron Kovic, the
author of "Born on the Fourth of July". Randolph and
Ron were prominent veterans who turned AGAINST the
Vietnam War.)

I had arranged with Tinckle, to send him a daily report
of my interviews with patients at the Veteran's
Administration Medical Center (VAMC), where Randolph
was hopefully recuperating (though for a while it might
have turned out to be his death bed..and that's why I
flew out; to give him renewed hope). These interviews
were done with my pocket recorder. This was all ILLEGAL
(to interview in this topic in the first place, and to
bring in and use a recorder w/o administration's
knowledge).

In case I got caught, before completing my 3-week
mission, I'd write down my interviews from the
recorder, each evening at my hotel. In the morning, I'd
make photocopies and send one to Tinckle. This way, he
could help me blow the whistle on malicious medical
neglect that sometimes led to the unnecessary death of
a patient war vet.

Well, I never got caught. Once I returned to S.F., I
tried contacting Tinckle via phone and snail mail. He
never got back in touch. And, worst of all (and this is
the crux of my secret):

He has never brought my witness evidence (through these
interviews) into the light of day, by leveraging his
influence as a prominent reporter, and writing one or
more articles on this serious matter.

TO THIS VERY DAY Tinckle is sitting on this
information. He does not know me by my present name,
which I legally changed to "Ezekiel Joseph Krahlin" in
1996. He has no idea I have not forgotten his apparant
betrayal. In fact, I wasn't even seeking revenge by
pouncing on something he wrote. I never READ him, and I
usually NEVER read the Examiner. So it was an elegant
COINCIDENCE that I stumbled upon his latest column,
which inspired a legitimate grievance...and which may
well be the catalyst for calling him to the carpet for
keeping the evidence of medical neglect under his
bushel.

Anyone who cares to forward my little tidbit
to him, you may as well first discover my original
name, which proof you can find here:

Average reader's take: another unhinged pissy faggot.

And of course they'd be 100% correct.

Sure, if the "average reader" is homophobic. And that IS the case. The
average reader is therefore, WRONG. The majority (on the gay issue, at
least) is WRONG.

> And of course they'd be 100% correct.

Only in the same sense when a bigot demonizes a person of color, you'd
call an outraged black person a "pissy nigger".

You have no brains. I pray to God you don't breed. But if you do, I
pray for your sad child.

I can call you a pissy faggot all I like. In fact, try this
on for size: you're a deranged pissy faggot. I can only
imagine what your standup is like: GLAAD laying in wait
every time somebody fails to laugh.

Huh? I said he still owes me $600 and I said he's a publicity-hungry
hack. How can you possibly construe this as being an apologist?

It doesn't make you look very good to make fun of someone's last name.

I doubt that anyone cares enough about this guy or you to look at the
web page. He's just an historical footnote, if even that.

You're still complaining about a 15-year old news story? Had you had
any really newsworth information in those interviews, Warren Hinckle
or any number of other people would have jumped on it. They'd all
love to win a Pulitzer, even Warren Hinckle.

We can say all kinds of nasty things about Hinckle (god knows most of
his friends do), but he does have an excellent nose for news, having
been an editor as well as a columnist. If he didn't find it
newsworthy, it probably wasn't.

> He has no idea I have not forgotten his apparant

Betrayal? Only a lunatic would use that term in this situation.
Warren Hinckle is a columnist, sometime reporter, and sometime editor.
He is not your friend. He made an editorial judgment and decided
that it wasn't worth following up on your story.

If you're such a goddamned great journalist, why don't you go to the
bar where he hangs every afternoon and tell him yourself? Anybody
with half an ounce of journalism skills can find out where he drinks.
Go there and talk to him personally about it.

Certainly. Any idiot can. Is that the level on which you choose to be
regarded? Be my guest, then. Step this way to the gas chambers.

I'm not impressed. I get that same kind of vulgar attitude, mostly
from hetero homophobes. Your using the same barbarian strategy is as
overly simplistic as a caveman bludgeoning his best friend in over to
swat a fly. How very heterocentric.

> I can only
> imagine what your standup is like:

Obviously, you lack imagination, too. (Intelligence being the other,
in case this eludes you.) The audience went nuts; in a good way. Proof
is right there on my website, where I recorded the skit:

www.gay-bible.org/first_gig.htm

> GLAAD laying in wait
> every time somebody fails to laugh.

Nope; they're often just jealous, prissy mama's boys who can't STAND
gay activists, and even more hateful when said activists become a
success and inspiration to all good folk (no matter what their
sexuality).

I'll take the high road while you take the low; I doubt we'll ever
meet. And if we do, it'll be only because I'm helping unplug a sewer
line.
