Lee Shore received my manuscript and then promptly called me about
not finding a check. Gee, I was invited, I tell the lady. Then
she wants to know if I want to send money for them to look at my
manuscript or go with the "free option"!!
Apparently, if you don't send $$, they don't scrutinize your story
too seriously for salability. That would be a waste of time.....
Well, DUH!!
I thought they wanted to make money..... imagine my surprise! If
someone sends a story, invited none-the-less, I'd be sure to look
it over with a finetooth comb. I'm going to be more aware of this
person's writing so my time wouldn't be wasted. There has to be
money in there somewhere... know what I mean?
All I can say, if they think they are getting any $$ out of me
besides the standard 15%,
they are nuts!!! Of course I went with the free option. If they
don't like my story, there are always other agents... you know,
more than one way to skin a cat!!!! I lived through other
rejections before.....

I assume this is an "agent" you're talking about? If so, then don't expect
to hear from them again. They're scammers. Get busy and find yourself a
real agent.

Your reply to Karen was almost correct. It should have read:
Get busy and find yourself a real agent *even* if you hear from
them again (unless, of course, they've pre-sold your ms, gotten a
written commitment from a respectable publisher for a respectable
advance, and are calling to ask you where to mail the check).

I've dealt with this agency in the past. Trust me, they are disreputable.
I've posted about Lee Shore before so I won't go into great detail, but I
will you give a quick summary about my experience. Please keep in mind this
was several years ago and I was naive:
I paid them a reading fee.
They insisted my book needed editing before they could represent me and then
offered to do it for $2500.00. Uh, no thank you. I told them I would
re-edit it myself. I made absolutley no changes and sent it back to them.
They were pleased with the new, edited version and accepted it.
The contract I signed allowed them to charge me for miscellaneous office
expenses incurred during the marketing of the book. This included any air
fare expenses related to the marketing of the work. There was a clause
stating that I would be notified, in advance, if air travel were necessary.
I was charged for phone calls, query letter preparation and mailing
expenses.
I was queried about subsidy publishing twice and even though I flatly
refused that avenue of publication, they offered me a subsidy publishing
deal with a subsidy publisher that was owned by my agent.
I was sent a letter detailing a new web site that the agency was starting to
feature their authors and their work. For $1500.00 I too could be put on
their web site. When I refused, I was dropped as a client.
Lee Shore did sell my book to Caramoor Press International, a small press
start-up. I found out later that the owner of this company was a buddy with
my agent. After waiting a year to see my book in print, Caramoor announced
that it was bankrupt and would not be publishing my work. I was one of
seventy five authors who had signed on with this publisher on the advice of
Lee Shore. How could a small publisher possibly publish seventy five books
in a year? Even two or three years? My agent knew this too, so why had she
pushed all of us to sign on? To this day, I still don't know.
Run away from this agency and never look back.

Thank you very much for that information. I'll see what they send me letter
wise and then insist they send me back everything I sent them. I did include
stamps for the proper amount of postage. If they offer a contract, I'll take it
to an attorney, make sure he reams it and tell them to shove it where the sun
don't shine!!
