unable to find files on xp

[ajay logani]

We were using microsoft windows 98 and any data (text) in
any file that we were creating in windows 98 we were able
to find it using the search option.

After starting the usage of xp pro we are unable to do
the same exercise.

PROBLEM
file name generated : apr-04.p65
to find text inside the file : ajay logani

in win98 we search it as :

filename : *.p65
containing text : ajay logani

in xp we do the same but are unable to find files.

Kindly, Urgently workout a solution.

XP has a known issue for not being able to do a find for files named *.blah,
containing text abcdefg for other than some of the basic types of files.

Modify the extension in the following REG file for the file type(s) you wish
to be able to search and import it into the Registry.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.adm\PersistentHandler]
@="{5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

Not my work, supposedly a closely guarded MS secret, but has been put out
publicly in the XP groups, already. You may want to ensure that the
PersistentHandler doesn't already exist :)

Just to add to Frank's quote of Doug's post. If you have SP1 installed
you can now turn this on for all file extensions in one, less than
obvious, place. From a command prompt or the start, run box enter the
following command:

mmc %windir%\system32\ciadv.msc

This will bring up the properties for indexing service. On the Action
menu select Properties. On the general tab under Inheritable settings
check the box that reads "Index files with unknown extensions." Once you
Apply that change XP will now search in all files for text regardless of
the extension. Note that indexing services does *not* need to be turned
on or enabled for this to affect the search in files functionality.

Sheesh! I just got done bitching about there not being
any workarounds for that, and all of a sudden one pops
up! I cojldn't make heads or tails out of the
preceding response about adding extensions. Ask and ye
shall receive, I guess, if the time's right. Hate to
bite the hand that taught me how to fish, but if this's
been known, why's it been such a secret?
