I have a broken screen on my Palm 3xe. It will cost me $100 to replace,
however, Palm is offering me a new m100 for $85 or a m105 for $129. I
wanted to get people's opinions about which option they would take. I was
leaning towards the m105 but, I have heard some negative rumblings regarding
the m105. Thanks for any feedback and assistance you can offer.

If you're willing to 'get your hands dirty' go to
http://www.gethightech.com and buy a complete replacement screen
for $70 (if the top glass AND the LCD itself is broken) or just
the digitizer/glass top for $50 if the LCD still works. Or you can
have them do the work for you for an additional $15, return shipping
included.

I just replaced the digitizer on my IIIxe and it went very well.
Check out their website for pictures of what's involved.

I ordered a refurbished m105 from Palm to replace my IIIxe. It was
defective right out of the box, and I didn't like it for a few other
reasons, plus I have a PalmPix for my IIIxe that wouldn't work with
it, so I returned it and got a brand new IIIxe... so now I have two.

Lack of flash was one thing I didn't like about the m105, plus the
smaller screen wasn't as nice.

Go on ebay and buy a new M105 for $99 (you may have to look for a
while, but they're there). If you're interested in getting a few
bucks for your IIIxe, send me an email.

I'm on my third m105. The first one I had developed a dead spot after a
little over a month. They sent me a replacement where the digitizer
was so bad that it took me about 15 minutes to set the clock (some
of the hotspots were off by as much as 5mm even after DigiFix!).
Now they sent me one that appears to be working perfectly, and has
made me realize that the original never *did* work quite right in
the first place (the grafitti on the replacement is much easier).
I've only had the new one about 1 week, so we'll see how it holds up.

If you check the NG, you'll see this particular complaint it pretty
common in the m100 series.

Bottom line: although I love the m105 when it works, it's obviously
an attempt at an entry level product that ended up sacrificing
some quality. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably spend
an extra $50 and get something else (e.g. a Vx).

Correction. Check the comp.sys.palmtops NG. There's a thread
devoted to this problem (and another thread in German).
