Hi,

I've just built a system based on Asus A7V8X-X (VIA) plus an Athlon 2500+
333Mhz processor & Crucial 3200 memory.

The problem is the bios sets the speed at 1.467Ghz, 11x, 133/33fsb

On my pc (Asus A7V8X-X (Via) and Athlon 2400+ 233Mhz) the processor speed is
reported fine (1.998Ghz)

I'm a bit stuck as there doesn't seem to be a setting for auto detect
(unless it defaults or something), it does allow you to select other FSB
speeds (and multipler) but none of the resulting reported speeds seem
correct (I was thinking it should be around 2.100Ghz?)

So,

What is the correct FSB Multiplier ratio for a 2500+/333 processor?

And any other general ideas appreciated!

Thanks
Rich

An XP2500 (333Mhz) Barton should clock at 1833 MHz = 11 x 166 FSB.

You should improve performance by running your RAM in sync with your cpu. So
9 x 200 FSB is better, if your mobo and cpu can handle it, and your cpu is
unlocked (most are not, except the mobile cpus) - and this would be a
slight underclock.

If you are happy about overclocking, then raise the FSB - assuming your cpu
is multiplier locked at 11x. Quite a few can run their Barton XP 2500s at
200 FSB which is XP3200 territory.

Rich, I'm not sure the A7V8X-X will support Athlons with Barton cores.
I bought a couple of these from Aria to run with XP2600 Bartons and
neither of the mobos will boot to Windows, they only go as far as BIOS
setup. Both mobos work fine with Thoroughbred cores so I guess the
board won't run Bartons.

I dropped the Barton CPUs in MSI KT4 AV-L boards without any
problems... nice board, and you get round cables with it... :-)

I'd be amazed if this was true, given that Asus mark the XP2600 Barton
and all other 166MHz CPUs as functional in all BIOS versions. Even if it
can't figure out exactly what the CPU is (the XP2600 Barton is pretty
new), it should still work. Sure you're not setting the FSB to 200MHz
instead of 166?

Having read this thread, I just changed my Barton 2500 from 11x166 to 9x200
Nice! My Aida benchmark has just blasted up a few notches, and I'm still
only getting a 41 degrees temp reading from the CPU.

Is it really rare to get an unlocked multiplier Barton though?

The KT400 can't do better than 166MHz FSB without overclocking the
PCI/AGP bus, so it's dependent on what devices (particularly the video
card) you have installed. Normally 185-190 works well enough.

As a result, they're not great boards for overclocking an XP2500+. Fine
for a Duron though.

These days, yeah. They all used to be unlocked. Usually if you have a
brown-coloured one it's unlocked, while green ones are locked. I don't
think this is absolute though.

nope, the board DEFINITELY supports 166MHz-core Bartons.

FSB needs to be set to 166MHz.
