I want to typeset a biographical dictionary in LaTeX2e. On each odd
page of the dictionary, there should be a header with the first
dictionary item on this page, and on each even page there should be a
header with the last dictionary item on this page. I have not found a
way to do this in LaTeX2e, and I hope that someone can help me solving
this problem. I know it must be possible, because the index of the
LaTeX Companion has dictionary-like page headings.

With thanks in anticipation,
Marcel Kolsteren.

Get the package fancyheadings and read the documentation for the
package. It contains an example very similar (if not the same)
of exactly what you wish to do.
