I have installed Windows Server 2003 with IIS6 on a domain
controller in a small test domain (only one server and a
few client computers).

The websites are placed on D:\WebHotels and contain
FrontPage 2002 extensions. The operating system is
installed on C:. The harddisk has been 100% reformatted
during Window installation to install with default
permissions.

On an irregular basis I get this error in the eventlog:

Source: Active Server Pages
Category: None
Event ID: 5
User: N/A

Error: The Template Persistent Cache initialization failed
for Application Pool 'DefaultAppPool' because of the
following error: Could not create a Disk Cache Sub-
directory for the Application Pool. The data may have
additional error codes..

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Clicking the link in the error does not help (no
information available from Microsoft).

I'm pretty sure that "error 5" means something like "write
error". And the disk system is okay (plenty of space), so
it must be some kind of "access denied" error.

I have also followed method 2 in this document:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=332097

But only the permissson on the iishelp directory had a
problem, all the other directories are okay.

I'm unable to track down WHAT and WHERE IIS6 tries to
create a sub-directory, so I can check the permission. It
is below the website or somewhere in the system32\inetsrv
path??? Any help appreciated.

Funny, I actually found a solution after having put up
Auditing on the directory "C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\ASP
Compiled Templates" to audit all access from Everyone. It
soon showed me that the NETWORK SERVICE was denied access
to the directory. And the account is not memeber of the
WPG_IIS group that Microsoft told in this article to put
full access to:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=332097

So, dear Microsoft, you need to update the above article
to include the NETWORK SERVICE account in step 2 on that
directory.

The problem has been solved!

I am having the same problem and attempted what you
attempted without success. I'm new to windows servers and
am learning how to do the auditing. However, I'm stil not
getting result. Do I need to either repost the web sites,
reboot the server, or restart IIS to make this work?

Thanks for posting your solution!!
