Since I have been intrigued by both the album title and group name origins
threads, I thought I'd start a new one. What's your favorite song that
you have heard a cappella? It can be a cover, an original, live,
recorded, whatever. I'm just curious. I'll get the ball rolling...
I have two favorites, both live, one-time experiences. First, my freshman
year, the Bubs sang with us at our Spring Concert. They went into Pink
Floyd's Hey You, and I was floored. Their live version is actually better
than the original, I kid you not. Dave Iscove, a freshman at the time,
got a standing ovation for his solo. It was quite disturbing (the
portrayal of the soloist's p.o.v., that is).
Okay, the other song after Hey You has got to be Penn Six's Fifth of
Beethoven. When they pulled that out at the regional of the competition
this year, I think the whole audience was floored. It was Beethoven on
crack, and all without instruments. Very impressive.

My second choice would be Housejacks, with Palm Sunday... the Jacks always
have such cool background.. ain't no-one can jam like them! and strong
emotional solo.. gotta love it ;)

They were at Dartmouth twice since I've been here and i love them! Hey
You was spectacular -- i have two of their CD's and they are wonderful
as well (Gilding! and one of the live ones that included tracks from
another group...i'm surrently blanking on the title...sorry!). They
are one of my favorite groups that I've seen. I have always liked the
Dartmouth Aires *grin* and the Brown Derbies as well. There have been
other groups that have vistied that have been good as well, but these
stick out as being among the best.
Actually, now that I think about it, the HouseJacks were here a year
ago (?) and I was sooooo impressed! I couldn't believe the sounds they
produced!
Anyway, that's just my two cents...

Have you guys heard the Tufts Amalgamates' cover of Possession? It's on
their new disc, "Hat Sale! Get Mama!" (good disc). I've heard both
versions, and I have to say the Mates' cover is better. Anybody else
heard the disc? Definitely worth the $12. Check it out.

Please pardon my first posting to this newsgroup, and the fact I missed
the start of this thread.
I usually find it impossible to pick my favorite anything in music, but
the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this topic was
"After the Goldrush", by Prelude. It's a Neil Young song that is so
dreamy and moving as done by Prelude. It's been a favorite of mine for
over 20 years.

I'm a King's Singers fan, too and I know and love "That lonesome road" as
well! But what about "You Are the New Day" -that's a spiritual, isn't it? I
didn't mention that the King's singers published an a-capella version of
this -if it's the one that I know- wonderful song.
Can you tell me on which Compact Disc it is available (in case, it is
available on CD at all, of course!) ?
Thanks a lot!

Wohin kämen wir denn, wenn jeder fragte: "Wo kämen wir denn da hin?", aber
keiner ginge, um mal zu sehen, wohin man, wenn man ginge, käme.
At the very moment my absolute favorite a-capella song is: "CHILI CON CARNE"
by "The Real Group" from Scandinavia!
Does anybody know this?
It's found on the CD called "New Day", which is actually my favourite
King's Singers CD to date. It contains many lovely tracks like "Can't
Buy Me Love" and "Singapore Girl" (not strictly a-cappella but what the
heck -- ti's great!!) Also love their ABBA-Grease Medley entitled
"Money, Money, Money/Summer nights".
Another good CD by the Kings' that I really like is one called "Watching The
White Wheat". There is also a greatest hits kind of compilation on EMI
Classics for Pleasure that is pretty interesting, and very fun.
The Kings' Singers don't always make good listening. I hated this
compilation of theirs called "America" -- very dreary and very boring,
with over-the-top and over-sumptuous orchestral support.

I don't remember which group performed it, but there was an a cappella
version of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody that blew me away...

Being the Tufts Beelzebubs fan that I am, I'd have to say that my favorite
a cappella song is their rendition of "Family Snapshot" off their CD
"Gilding". Unfortunately, I still don't know who did the song originally
(although I think someone once told me it was Peter Gabriel, which I
doubt).
Bobby McFerrin doing "Blackbird". :-)

Well, there ya' go. My list. As you can tell I really like The Real
Group and Take 6...go figure. :) The following are things I took into
account when ranking the songs:
* How each one struck me the first time I heard it
* If I still listen to it
* Whether or not the song was innovative
* How the group/person does on other songs
* Vocal versatility and musical variety
