Since I have been intrigued by both the album title and group name origins
threads, I thought I'd start a new one. What's your favorite song that
you have heard a cappella? It can be a cover, an original, live,
recorded, whatever. I'm just curious. I'll get the ball rolling...

I have two favorites, both live, one-time experiences. First, my freshman
year, the Bubs sang with us at our Spring Concert. They went into Pink
Floyd's Hey You, and I was floored. Their live version is actually better
than the original, I kid you not. Dave Iscove, a freshman at the time,
got a standing ovation for his solo. It was quite disturbing (the
portrayal of the soloist's p.o.v., that is).

Okay, the other song after Hey You has got to be Penn Six's Fifth of
Beethoven. When they pulled that out at the regional of the competition
this year, I think the whole audience was floored. It was Beethoven on
crack, and all without instruments. Very impressive.

My first choice would have to be a BOCA pick, Sara McLachlan's Possession,
covered by UPenn Off The Beat. I finally heard the original after the
cover, and it's still an incredible song.. but Off The Beat not only
covers all the music beautifully but has a creative range of syllables and
words that really bring the song to life!

My second choice would be Housejacks, with Palm Sunday... the Jacks always
have such cool background.. ain't no-one can jam like them! and strong
emotional solo.. gotta love it ;)

Back to finals prep <sigh>

If there's one a cappella piece that ever completely and utterly blew me
away, it would have to be the King's Singers' cover of "That Lonesome
Road". Other choices:
King's Singers: And So It Goes
" : Blackbird
" : You Are the New Day
Chanticleer: Ave Maria (Biebl)(don't let Andrea Hakari see this!)
Quink Vocal Ensemble: Virginie, les Larmes aux yeux
All very close, but my vote would still go to Lonesome Road (sentimental
value...)

They were at Dartmouth twice since I've been here and i love them! Hey
You was spectacular -- i have two of their CD's and they are wonderful
as well (Gilding! and one of the live ones that included tracks from
another group...i'm surrently blanking on the title...sorry!). They
are one of my favorite groups that I've seen. I have always liked the
Dartmouth Aires *grin* and the Brown Derbies as well. There have been
other groups that have vistied that have been good as well, but these
stick out as being among the best.

Actually, now that I think about it, the HouseJacks were here a year
ago (?) and I was sooooo impressed! I couldn't believe the sounds they
produced!

Anyway, that's just my two cents...

Have you guys heard the Tufts Amalgamates' cover of Possession? It's on
their new disc, "Hat Sale! Get Mama!" (good disc). I've heard both
versions, and I have to say the Mates' cover is better. Anybody else
heard the disc? Definitely worth the $12. Check it out.

Amazin' Blue's version of Mr. Mister's "Kyrie" is one of my favorites.
Same with the Brown Derbies' version of "In Your Eyes." Terrific vocal
percussion and great background.

I'd have to say that the Virgina Gentlemen's cover of "Possession" is the
best of all time. If you want to argue I'll beat you down. If you haven't
heard it yet, you better, cuz it'll make your nuts fall off.

Hello all,

Please pardon my first posting to this newsgroup, and the fact I missed
the start of this thread.

I usually find it impossible to pick my favorite anything in music, but
the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this topic was
"After the Goldrush", by Prelude. It's a Neil Young song that is so
dreamy and moving as done by Prelude. It's been a favorite of mine for
over 20 years.

Regards,
Jeff

I'm a King's Singers fan, too and I know and love "That lonesome road" as
well! But what about "You Are the New Day" -that's a spiritual, isn't it? I
didn't mention that the King's singers published an a-capella version of
this -if it's the one that I know- wonderful song.
Can you tell me on which Compact Disc it is available (in case, it is
available on CD at all, of course!) ?
Thanks a lot!

Hi, Folks!

At the very moment my absolute favorite a-capella song is: "CHILI CON CARNE"
by "The Real Group" from Scandinavia!

Does anybody know this?

It's found on the CD called "New Day", which is actually my favourite
King's Singers CD to date. It contains many lovely tracks like "Can't
Buy Me Love" and "Singapore Girl" (not strictly a-cappella but what the
heck -- ti's great!!) Also love their ABBA-Grease Medley entitled
"Money, Money, Money/Summer nights".

Another good CD by the Kings' that I really like is one called "Watching The
White Wheat". There is also a greatest hits kind of compilation on EMI
Classics for Pleasure that is pretty interesting, and very fun.

The Kings' Singers don't always make good listening. I hated this
compilation of theirs called "America" -- very dreary and very boring,
with over-the-top and over-sumptuous orchestral support.

"Morning" on Vox One's OUT THERE blows me away every time, especially that
last chord, oh my. I'm too much of an a cappella freak to have a favorite tune,
but that's definitely up there.

version of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody that blew me away...

Being the Tufts Beelzebubs fan that I am, I'd have to say that my favorite
a cappella song is their rendition of "Family Snapshot" off their CD
"Gilding". Unfortunately, I still don't know who did the song originally
(although I think someone once told me it was Peter Gabriel, which I
doubt).

Hi all we're forming a new acappella group at Columbia called the Free
Samples. We are Soprano-High Tenor-Tenor-Bass, except for one
problem,NO BASS!! We are planning on doing almost exclusively original
music. We are unlike anybody you've ever heard (personalities
included), so plan on doing a wide variety of stuff - all comical of
course. "If you want to sing and have that great bass ring", call (212)

Well, as most people out there, I can never narrow it down to just *one*
favorite a cappella tune. So, here is:

Jeff's Top Ten A Cappella Tunes
.------------------------------------------------------------------------.
| # | Song Title | Performer | Album |
`------------------------------------------------------------------------'
10. Silhouettes The Nylons Modern A Cappella
9. In The Silence Of Time New York Voices What's Inside
8. Shambala Rockapella Primer
7. A Cappella In Acapulco The Real Group Unreal & Roster
6. Tear Down The Walls The House Jacks Naked Noise
5. Something Within Me Take 6 So Much 2 Say
4. Blackbird Bobby McFerrin The Voice
3. I've Got Life Take 6 Join the Band
2. Chile Con Carne The Real Group Nothing But The Real G...

And The Number ONE A Cappella Tune according to Jeff...

1. It Don't Mean A Thing The Real Group Nothing But... & Unreal

Well, there ya' go. My list. As you can tell I really like The Real
Group and Take 6...go figure. :) The following are things I took into
account when ranking the songs:

* How each one struck me the first time I heard it
* If I still listen to it
* Whether or not the song was innovative
* How the group/person does on other songs
* Vocal versatility and musical variety

The Washingto University Pikers did a version, arranged by Chris
Tess , along with WAsh U's Greenleafs that is positively stunning. The
lead singer Jeff Tommenang is a dead ringer(vocally) for Freddy Mercury).
It is a beautiful track!! You can find it through CASA on the `On the

How about "Come Home" by New York Voices? I've listened to the CD, and
I've performed it. Both ways can make me cry. Another of my favorites
(not strictly a cappella) is the Nylons' "Prince of Darkness" from "One
Size Fits All," an album that also contains that version of
"Silhouettes."
