I am having big problems getting X windows to start on my Debian
Linuxppc potato install. I've installed it on upgraded 7500 with a
Apple 15" Multiscan monitor. At startup, before I am given a login
prompt at the console, the screen fades to black three times. I
think this happens when xdm is called up.

When I type as root startx, I don't have any more luck. The screen
goes black and then it gives me the following output:

Now I am new to debian linux, so I don't really know what to do. I
have ran Linuxppc R5 with X and everything worked fine.

Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!

Thanks,

This is a long shot, but this happened to me.

Look at /etc/X11/XF86Config . Near the bottom, you will see a stanza like:

# **********************************************************************
# Screen sections
# **********************************************************************

Section "Screen"
Driver "fbdev"
Device "IMS TT (IBM)"
Monitor "Sony CPD-100SF"
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "1152x864"
ViewPort 0 0
Virtual 1152 864
EndSubsection
EndSection

If Depth is set to 32, try switching it to 24. If 24, try 32. You
can just use a texteditor like vi to do this. Then try starting X
again.

Until you get X working, you can edit this line in /etc/inittab
to stop X from trying to start at boot:

id:5:initdefault:

Change it to 3:

id:3:initdefault:

One other thing - once you get X working, you may find that v3.3.6 of
/usr/bin/X11/XF68_FBDev gives weird colors. That happened to me when I
went from XFree86 3.3.5 to 3.3.6 . I just "downgraded" the X server
part to 3.3.5, and all is well now. If you have trouble finding the
3.3.5 version of XF68_FBDev, email me and I can send it to you.

Hope this helps! Good luck.
