Good evening to all,

Here is what I know of the Aerial Failure in KCMO last week.

It was a reserve 1979 American LaFrance. The turntable was located in the
rear of the apparatus.

The firefighter felt the ladder start to shake and the ladder operator
started to retract the ladder and that when it buckled.

Since this has happened all the aerial trucks including the Quints has been
retested by a private contract firm. All have passed the test.

Prior to the testing by the contract firm, by order of the chief that all
trucks could not extend their ladders past the 70 foot range.

This reserve truck had passed it certification on the ladder in Apr 95.

I will try to keep everybody up to date.

Unknown at this time. I saw it in Ohio. What I saw was a defensive
operation with a platform and rear mount stick. The whole ladder seemed to
give way at the bottom, and twist to one side. It fell against the edge of
the building and the guy on the ladder pipe rode it down.

What I've learned is that it was a '79 Seagrave quint and that the
firefighter was uninjured and just shaken up. Accident is still under
investigation.

It was a KCMO reserve ladder truck which failed due to stress (No kidding!)

Additionally the front line truck was in the shop due to ladder problems.

More later after the investigation is completed.

Check with NYFD or Yonkers FD,NY. If I remember correctly they have had a
few of these same incidents. I believe
they were all Seagrave's, not sure though, can't remember the details.
