Hi,
I'm trying to connect from VS.net 2003 to a PXA255 Xscale device, with
CE.net 4.10, and I've already downloaded & installed the utilities add-on.

I've read the html help file and it seems that I'll have to copy some files,
like toolhelp.dll, but I don't know which version must I copy because there
are several CPU options, but I don't know what to choose. I thought that the
PXA255 would be an Armv5 CPU, but I only find armv4, armv4t and armv4i
versions.

When trying to select the right CPU from vs.net, there's also the several
armv4 options... whuch should I choose? Am I missing some SDK?

Thanks,
Alberto Silva

PXA25x will run ARM4 just fine. The OS on the device should be built to
contain toolhelp (it's actually rather difficult to build it with the .NET
CF and without toolhelp, though).

Are you actually having problems getting VS.NET to connect to the device? I
think that, if you built the device with .NET CF and ActiveSync support in
it, it should pretty much work the first time. You *may* need to use the
utilities add-on (select ARMV4), but I haven't needed that...

Sorry, but is there someone else using VS.net 2003 with CE 4.1 and Xscale
PXA255?
Am I asking in the wrong newsgroup?
Is this under any kind of NDA?

BTW, the device I'm using is the Casio IT-500

Thanks,
Alberto Silva

Patience, my friend! Yes, I run CE.NET 4.1 on an XScale processor with .NET
CF 1.0 and it works perfectly. This *is* the right newsgroup and, no,
unless you ask about future products, it's not under NDA.

Hi Paul,
The device is made by Casio, it's the new IT-500.
I'll copy the toolhelp to the device, because I can't find it on the
\windows folder... Do you think that any of the armv4 will do it? (i'm
referring to the armv4, armv4I and armv4T folders)

Thanks,
Alberto Silva

I'm using a PXA255 4.1 device with the CF and Studio 03 it works fine. I
*did* have to use the Studio add-on pack to get connectivity to the device.

Hi Chris,
In the CPU selection tool, what did you choose, armv4? Did you have to copy
the toolhelp.dll file?
I can't wait to go home and test it to see the performance diference between
this device and the iPaq 5450...

I had to use ARM4T (though it's an ARM4i device). I know the device already
has toolhelp.dll on it (it *is* required) because I built the image.

Just because you can't see it in \Windows doesn't mean it's not there.
Many, many, many of the Windows CE base DLLs are hidden in a way that makes
them impossible to show. Using Remote File Viewer will usually show them,
but local viewing with Explorer is not possible. I guess one test would be
to write a quick eVC program and LoadLibrary on toolhelp.dll and see if it
works...

I'd be surprised if it wasn't there, but if it's not, only the device OEM
would be able to help you. We can't send you pieces of the OS...

Hi Paul,
When trying to copy it, I've found that it already existed, and I've not
replaced it.

However I still can't connect to the device... tomorrow I'll start a new
thread about the IT 500 to check wether someone has already did it.

BTW, I've created a CAB file from a small sample app. in vb.net, copied
it to the device with ActiveSync, and I was happy to see it working!!!

Boy, I don't have any ideas, other than the usual "unable to connect" ones
concerning installing ActiveSync after VS.NET 2003, etc...

Alberto,

I have a new product almost ready for beta written with VS 2003 for a CE 4.1
device.

Alberto,

As Chris said, you need to install the VS 2003 Add-on pack and use the Choose
CPU tool and specify ARMV4T to get remote debugging to work. I was able to
simply connect and deploy without doing this however.

Well, my first steps with VS.net 2003 are not going as I wished...

My notebook doesn't connect to my ipaq 5450... AS 3.7 is ok, I've patched
the registry with the proxy-something.reg files, and it never connects.
My home desktop pc, connects perfectly with the iPaq, but even after
following all sugestions, it doesn't connect with the IT 500

Go figure...

Have a nice week-end,
Alberto Silva

Alberto,

I know how frustrating this is. One of my testers had trouble getting AS 3.7 to
work with our Symbol 8800 units - meanwhile another tech 10 feet away got it
working perfectly the first time! The solution was to uninstall AS 3.7 and
cold-reboot the Symbol. I don't know if you've tried that, but it really should
be easy. Honest!

Hi Alberto,

Did you solve your problem? If you didn't find a solution I will try to
help you by sending some tools to find out what could be the problem.

Thanks,
