The shapes of the characters you see in DOS are what's in the motherboard's ROM, not a "font" file.

You'll have to hunt around on the web or ask here in a different way. The two companies I always recommended to get these from seem to have closed down (these were the producers of the fonts, not piracy sites that got shut down).

There's a shareware TrueType font that's an *excellent* conversion of the
default VGA font: E. A. Behl's "Video Terminal Screen". Though Behl's
official website (techfont.com) seems to have disappeared, the font is still
circulating online (after all, that was the author's intent!); here's one
site that offers it:

I'm glad you brought up the Behl name -- it seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. The URL I had been using for years was http://www.eabehl.com/, and it's gone, too.

Incidentally, not long after I'd posted the link to Video Terminal Screen,
I'd discovered that the producers of the NetTerm terminal software have
designed a TrueType rendition of the DOS font. I know, that sounds like an
oxymoron, but download the font and you'll see what I mean; though the
letterforms have been redrawn as scalable outlines, they're nonetheless
clearly recognizable as those used in the default DOS font.

Some of you may prefer this over the bitmapped Video Terminal Screen,
despite the fact that it's not an exact copy of the actual screen font; it's
really a matter of taste...

The fonts comes from the VGA BIOS by default but on EGA
and VGA cards you can load fonts using DISPLAY.SYS and
MODE from MS-DOS.

Windows uses several ugly fonts for the DOS-Box. The
TTF fonts come from LUCIDIA.TTF, the bitmap fonts from
VGAOEM.FON and DOSAPP.FON.

I made some bitmap fonts with real DOS look that works
fine with all Windows versions:

Uwe, those are real nice fonts. In fact, I just sprung the big bucks for the licensed version.

Hmmm, I should have read things more closely.... I missed where you said where you "...made some bitmap fonts..." and I snapped them up thinking they were TrueTypes. But they are FON files.

Thanks for pointing out that site; I just moved from a 640x480 screen
to 1024x768 screen, and the 12x23 font in NEWDOS.ZIP is helping to
tide me over the transition...
