I am running Windows XP Pro and just installed the DirectX 9.0a End-User
Runtime update from the Windows Update site.

The installation went smoothly and completed properly. DXDiag shows the new
version as DirectX 8.1 (4.09.00.0901).

The subsequent DXDiag tests were all OK except for the following 4 errors in
DirectPlay noted on the Network page:
Registry information for the service provider "DirectPlay8 Modem Service
Provider" is missing or damaged. Same error for the Serial Service
Provider, IPX Service Provider and TCP/IP Service Provider.

DXDiag froze up when I tried to run the DirectPlay test. The error report
response from Microsoft seemed to suggest that the solution was to reinstall
DirectX 9.0a. Do I have any other options? I don't mind going thru the
installation again (at 28.8 Kbps) but maybe someone knows of a better
solution. Thanks in advance.

Do you have a Linksys router and have you tried upgrading the firmware?

Thanks for the reply, but No, I do not have a Linksys router. (I'm
embarrassed that I don't even know what that is!)-------------Bob Jones

I noticed the same problem that dxdiag showed it as 8.1 and not 9a. Then I
located dxdiag through windows /system32 etc and noticed an updated symbol
done a dxdiag with this and it was the new 9a version. Have you pasted a
link for dxdiag like I had. it does not get updated with the upgrade. you
need to deleate the old links and create new ones with the new symbol

David Brimley was right! I deleted my old dxdiag.exe shortcut and made a
new one for the updated dxdiag.exe file I found in c:\windows\system32 (the
one that the DirectX 9.0a update placed there). Then, I ran the new dxdiag
and found that everything was OK. The 4 DirectPlay 8 errors that showed up
under the old dxdiag.exe were not repeated. Thanks, Dave.

Very strange. Where was your DX8.1 dxdiag.exe? It should have been in the
same spot (%windir%\system32) and overwritten w/DX9.0a.

To Mike Gamble: My old dxdiag.exe was in the C:\I386 folder, and was
version 5.1.2600.1106 dated 8/29/02. In fact, it is still there.
The new dxdiag was placed in the C:\Windows\System 32 folder by the DirectX
9.0a installation. It is version 5.3.0.901 and is dated 12/12/02.

Thanks, Mike for your responses. I believe everything is OK now.
