Just after setup is to the point: (runs for a few minutes)
Setup is performing required operations on clustered nodes. This may take a
few minutes.

My SQL2000 install fails with:
Setup failed to perform required operations on the clustered nodes.

Any ideas.
the cluster is working fine as far as I can tell.

Thanks
Tony

Dear Anthony,
There is a problem with sql2kEE setup. Please download the
latest setup.iss latest file and copy all your install
files into a local drive and start your installation by
replacing the setup.iss file which was posted very recenty.
It asks for a password also while extracing.

You will not have any problems. The same problem we
encountered and with this method it worked well.
Sorry, right now I dont have the note now, the file was
posted on May 7th 2002.

Is there anything assumed that I could be missing? I have tried it all and
still get that error.

The cluster as far as NT works. I can do a file share and it fails over with
no problems.

Thanks

There are all kinds of reasons you may be receiving this error….
Basically, two things have happened to cause this error. The node
installing SQL tried to perform and installation instruction and it
returned an invalid return code. This leaves the door open to many
different options considering there are over 350 steps/instruction in
the install.
Although the answers provide may work, the chance that someone guessed
your exact issues may be a little unlikely.
The best way to find out what is causing this error is to look at the
install logs. It will show you where the error is occurring and may
point you in the direction of what is causing it. The error logs are
not in layman's terms so it may take awhile for you to get it. (I have
gone through this process many times)

There will be three SQL logs that can be founds in the Winnt directory
of the nodes.
The node that is performing the install will have two logs named
sqlstp.log & sqlstpX.log. The sqlstp.log is re-written upon every
attempt and will most likely not be helpful because it shows the
procedures running on both machines. You should use this log to match
the times with the other logs to pin point the exact error.
If you have attempted the installation repeatedly there will be a log
for each event. They are numbered sequentially like: first install
attempt will be named sqlstp1.log; second install attempt will be
named sqlstp2.log, etc. These logs will be on both nodes, and they
will be different.

If you need further assistants or need help identifying the error,
feel free to email me your error logs.
Warning! The error logs contain system accounts and IP address
information. For security reasons you may want to delete this
information from the logs before passing them along.

Good LORD I found it... I did not know you needed to move the cluster to the
AD Domain...

IT WORKS!!!!

I've seen that happen when one of the nodes had an additional network drive
mapped using netbeui.
The install was run from the network drive.

The account you are using to perform the install most likely does not
have the appropriate permissions to install on the remote node. (Like
permissions to use the remote registry service) I would make sure you
are using a domain account with domain admin privileges.

If you still cannot perform the install make sure to attach the logs
from the remote machine.
When you log into the machine to perform the install, make sure you
use the system admin account not a domain user account.

Let me know if this helps.

What I did was to install the cluster and join the servers to a trusted
domain (NT4). I used a user account from the Primary domain (NT2000) and
that user account was a local admin on each server. During the install I
noticed the 1396 errors and such. I then moved the nodes into the Primary
domain (NT2000) and the SQL install worked.

I'm not sure just what was going on with the permissions/account but after
someone told me about the logs I could see that even during the setup I used
account/password/domain, it had a hard time with the NT4 Resource and the
login was failing.

In any case I got it working.

Thanks
Tv
