Hi,

stange thing. My computer (laptop, winXP, sp1) and VS6 sp5 has a bad
behaviour:

When I try to complie ot save a file, sometimes (very often) the message:
cannot save file: blabla.cpp. Another application might use this file.

But!! when this warning comes, the file is not available on HDD anymore now!
If I save it again, everything's fine. But once I forgot and the file was
gone. Not even a undelete program could see it anymore.

Only one instance of VS is running. I uninstalled sourcesafe already, since
I thought this would be it.

I'd really love to get help on this.
Sorry if it's OT.

-Gernot.

I've had this issue with VS before, when Norton AV was running - I turned
off Norton's
Auto-Detect feature, and everything went back to normal.

It would be worth checking your system for apps that have some kind of
file-system driver
installed (such as Norton) - very often the driver is buggy and conflicts
with your normal
usage of the system.

Yes - I have Norton AV running. I already assumed it might be it. Thank you
very much!

Just FWIW, I'm personally convinced that _far_ more productivity has
been lost to anti-virus programs than to every virus ever written put
together.

Strange, here in our office we had this discussion yesterday, too. And got
the same result. I think automatic daily backups and a bit of precaution
will be enough virus-protection.
I have now a free AV programm that only checks for a few extensions when
being saved.

For what it's worth, I've been running Visual Studio and Norton's AV
with AutoDetect for months with no file loss. The only possibly
related symptom is an occasional (every few weeks) file that won't
save when I try to build. I'm using Visual Studio 6 (not sure which
Service Pack) and NT 4 (SP 5). I also use eMbedded Visual Studio.

But I sure take your report (and others) seriously. Scary.

Yes. then yoiu built again and everything went fine, right!
That's the problem:
When VS cannot save a file, it's already deleted. If you rebuild, then the
file mostly is open in editor and will be saved then. But if you close it
when this warning appears, all data is lost forever. You cannot use any
undelete program anymore.
Really scary! I uninstalled NAV now. I reported the problem and the answer
was: On a preinstalled OEM version contact your manufacturer. Can you guess
what they will tell me?

Wow!
I have been telling people that VS is deleting my files for weeks, and
no one has believed me, we also have Norton AV running.
I get exactly the same simptoms, VS cannot access the file because
another process is using it, then if i dont hit the save key the file
is gone.

Does anyone know if this happens in VS.NET? We're running NAV, and
our corporate security standard won't let us turn it off...does
microsoft know that their product doesn't play well with NAV? This
really sounds like a VS bug, does anyone know if MS has fixed this?

The other process that is using the file is Norton AV. Try disable or stop
Norton AV and then see what happens.
