Howdy,

I am occasionally looking to download a specific font for my own (non commercial) purposes, but
it seems that the overwhelming majority of "free fonts" sites redirect to fonts.com, where I am
told I can purchase the font.

My question is, what are some good sites where I can download some fonts for my own usage for
free?

Thanks for any help with this,

Jon

That's because it's a commercial font - downloading it "for free" would be a
breach of copyright and could get you sued.

If they're commercial - nowhere.

Yes, this is obvious. As I stated originally, I am not looking for commercial fonts. If I
were, I would be prepared to pay a fee for them.

Do you know of any sites where I am able to download fonts for free, ie. non-commercial or
public domain fonts?

Thanks,

Jon

Hi,
This group isn't the best place to ask a question like this.
I popped in, and am a bit of an authority on this subject.
: )
Some of the best can be reached through this link:
http://moorstation.org/typoasis/designers.htm
Especially Apostrophic L'ab, Nick Curtis Manfred Klein, and for sure Dieter Steffman,
Some wonderful fonts are here: http://www.home.aone.net.au/abbadon/
Here's a good one: http://www.larabiefonts.com/fonts/a.html
A lot of nice script fonts: http://freefonts.fateback.com/es_typography/
I like some of these: http://www.mouserfonts.com/Showcase/shy001.htm
Lots of free comic fonts: http://www.blambot.com/
Check out the free silverware section here: http://www.fontdiner.com/main.html
http://bibliofile.mc.duke.edu/gww/fonts/fonts.html
Lots of Sci-fi and misc: http://www.iconian.com/
If you aren't tired yet, more links than you know what to do with at these sites:
http://cgm.cs.mcgill.ca/~luc/fonts.html
http://www.staffassoc.com/dpfonts/links_aa.htm

Yur question is beneath the people in this group (it is more of a technical forum)
But right up my alley.

Technically, freeware fonts usually aren't up to snuff, but there are some
exceptions. Like Dieter and many of the L'ab fonts. At my site is some fonts
in use, which have links to the download sites. but you should have hi-speed
internet: http://www.fontplay.com/

Best wishes,
Dennis

Aye, thanks for that, Claude. Found exactly the type of cursive font I was hoping for.

Thanks a TON for all of the sites, Dennis; I've looked through several of them already and there
are a lot of nice choices, especially the "script" site you linked to, since that is precisely
the type of font I am needing at the moment.

I haven't gone looking for fonts for several years, and I being a "non-pro" I was rather
dismayed at all of the supposedly free sites that were just shilling for fonts.com. I hate it
when companies feel the need to trick people into their site, something becoming more prevalent
on the net.

In any case, it's nice to have a good list of fonts for the rest of us; thanks again for the
great resource. I'll keep an eye on your site for happenings also.

Really nice site, Dennis. I'll be a frequent visitor in the future.
Keep up the good work!

That is a fairly recent development. I guess someone at fonts.com
is pretty proud of themselves.

There are a number of sources for free fonts, but a lot of those
you'll find are of pretty uneven quality.

Often your best bet for casual use are demo or shareware versions of
commercially relesed fonts.

One source I have to recommend for ths is The Scrptorium at
http://www.fontcraft.com

There's a new demo font on the site every two weeks and a huge archve
of prior demo releases.
