Just a heads up, I was pricing up a respray of the front of my car, just
the bottom of the bumper and the front guards.
see here www.dave.net.nz/images/pastey-front.jpg
Had to make it pastey for it to be visible...

Anyway, went to a place just near work, by instone motors, the place on
the corner of the oneway south and hanover st, and got given a price of
$280+gst which I thought wasn't too bad.

Anyway, went to Newton and Sykes to check what they'd charge, and they
said $120+gst.

WTF? under half the cost...
Who would you guys go to to get this sort of thing done?
Is there anyone here in the group who is comparable in price(hell,
somewhere in the middle would be good, I dont care) and does a pro job
of this sort of thing?

Broughton Street Painters in South Dunedin resprayed parts of my 1969
Mercedes Coupe about 2 years ago.
It looked like a very hard color to match (metalic gold/silver) but they did
it perfectly.
I believe Clements & Stephens (the best panelbeaters in town) as well as
Armstrong Prestige (the Merc dealers) also use them.

Was it Castle Street Panel Beaters you went to for the high quote? They
told us $2500 to fix up the car after my g/f had a crash. Clements and
Stephens? $900

You can guess which one we chose...

$120 sounds cheap. Where are they getting the house paint from? The
Warehouse?
Preparation time and the right paint that matches with the tints isn't
cheap.
If you want a cheap job take the $120 quote, otherwise choose a place that's
known for quality work especially if the car means much to you and you're
going to keep it for a while. Each make and model of car has it's own paint
formula. Just because your car is white, it's not a mattaer of slapping on
just any white paint.

The place that quoted $120 is better known for their work than the other
dearer place. I want a good job done, don't really care how much(within
reason), but dont see any reason to pay more than I should have to.

If I thought it would be easy and I could use any paint, I'd have given
it a go myself... but finger painting is about as far as I got in that
field.

John is right, we did choose Clements and Stephens but they did such a
crappy job that once I could afford it I had to go to someone else to get it
done properly so it wasnt even worth going to them in the first place! I
would avoid them if at all possible

Just my opinion

Over 10 years ago $120 would've been a good price for a proper job. The
sanding alone isn't a 5 minute job. Try some quality places just for advice
on what would be involved, and if it's possible to do a proper job for $120.
If someone was doing it for you as a weekend perk, $120 - $100 would be
about right. There isn't a tin of paint sitting round for your car or any
others, it's mixed up at the time to match the formula that's on your car,
there'll be a paint code somewhere for it.

Since my last post I got three others... two said it would be 150-170
incl but they couldn't do it as they were too busy, and the third said
~130+gst, so I'm thinking that it may just be a cheap one to get done,
maybe castle street don't want to do it? who knows.
